Twelve Turkish soldiers die from methane gas exposure during cave search in Iraq

The National07-07-2025
Turkey's Defence Ministry on Monday said 12 soldiers had died after being exposed to methane gas during a search operation in caves in the Kurdish region of Iraq.
The ministry said the incident had taken place on Sunday inside a cave in Duhok during a mission to retrieve the remains of a Turkish soldier killed during a military operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
'Four other of our heroic comrades in arms, affected by methane gas, have died … bringing the total number of victims to 12,' the ministry said on X, raising an earlier toll. It did not provide further details on the origin of the methane gas in the caves.
The soldier whose body the troops were searching for had been shot dead by Kurdish fighters in May 2022, the ministry said. Turkey was waging Operation Claw Lock at that time, attacking PKK positions in northern Duhok.
The incident comes amid renewed peace efforts and continuing talks aimed at ending the conflict between Turkey and the PKK. The militant group has agreed to end its decades-long armed struggle and to disarm.
The news of the deaths started to emerge on Sunday as a delegation from the pro-Kurdish DEM Party was visiting jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan. The party has been mediating the negotiations between the group and Ankara.
The DEM Party offered condolences over the deaths of the soldiers and said Ocalan had stated he was 'deeply concerned' by the incident.
The PKK was founded by Ocalan in 1978 and has waged an insurgency against the Turkish state for four decades, with about 40,000 killed on both sides. The group is designated a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US and the EU, something it challenges.

Iraq to launch oil exploration in Najaf soon

Iraq is on the verge of launching a massive oil and gas exploration operation in the South-central Najaf governorate, its governor has said. Yousuf Kanawi said the operation would begin this month and would cover wide areas stretching up to the border with Saudi Arabia. He told the official Iraqi News Agency that the project involves conducting seismic surveys in line with an oil exploration map devised by the governorate recently. He did not identify the companies which will conduct the surveys but said the project is part of the licensing rounds 5 and 6 which involved the awarding of oil contracts to several companies from China and other countries. Oman and Turkey sign strategic energy pact

Oman and Turkey have taken a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties with the signing of a wide-ranging Memorandum of Understanding in the energy sector. The agreement, formalised in Muscat, aims to bolster technical collaboration, enhance investment flows and support both nations' transition to sustainable energy systems. The MoU was signed by Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals and Alparslan Bayraktar, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. The agreement covers several strategic areas of cooperation, including oil and gas exploration, trade in liquefied natural gas (LNG), renewable energy development, energy efficiency and alternative fuels. Key provisions also focus on advancing joint projects in green hydrogen production and carbon capture technologies — critical elements in the global push towards decarbonisation. Under the MoU, both parties have committed to sharing technical expertise and policy experience, developing regulatory frameworks to enhance energy efficiency and exploring innovative technologies and financing mechanisms for clean energy infrastructure. The agreement also encourages the organisation of technical seminars and joint events, fostering dialogue and knowledge exchange. (Writing by Nadim Kawach; Editing by Anoop Menon) (

Drones attack Khurmala oilfield in Iraq's Kurdish region

Two drones attacked Khurmala oilfield in Iraq 's semi-autonomous Kurdish region on Monday night, counter-terrorism officials said. There were no casualties and only material damage was recorded, said the Iraqi Security Media Cell, an official body responsible for disseminating security information. An investigation into the incident has been launched in co-ordination with security forces in the region, it added. The regional Ministry of Natural Resources said the attack only resulted in damage to the oilfield's water pipes. It did not say whether production from Khurmala was affected. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Khurmala oilfield is located near the Iraqi Kurdish city of Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq. Iraq has seen a spate of drone and rocket attacks over the past weeks. A drone laden with explosives was downed this month near Erbil International Airport, with the regional Interior Ministry blaming the Popular Mobilisation Forces for the attack. The PMF is a coalition of pro-Iran former paramilitaries now integrated into Iraq's armed forces. In Baghdad, the federal government rejected this accusation against 'an official Iraqi security institution'. Erbil's airport has frequently been targeted by rocket and drone attacks in previous years. Iraq has been a frequent battleground for such attacks, often linked to regional proxy struggles. The country has only recently begun to regain a measure of stability after decades of war and upheaval.
