Federal model need not apply to Sabah: Parti Bersatu Sabah

Kota Kinabalu: The leadership of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and Pakatan Harapan Plus (GRS+PH Plus) State Government must be allowed to continue discussions based on mutual respect and consensus without external pressure, said Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Supreme Council Member Datuk Fredian Gan. Fredian voiced strong support for GRS Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali's recent stance that the Federal Unity Government model should not be imposed on Sabah, describing such moves as contrary to the spirit of Malaysia's formation. 'I fully support Armizan's position. As he rightly pointed out, the memorandum of understanding signed in December 2022 between five political coalitions was solely meant for the formation of the Federal Government,' said Fredian. He added that the unique political arrangements in Sabah should be respected, just as similar autonomy is honoured in Sarawak and Johor. 'The long-standing political respect enjoyed by Sarawak, and more recently Sabah, contributes to Malaysia's unique democratic framework. Imposing the Federal model on Sabah disregards the principle of equal partnership between Sabah, Sarawak and Malaya, enshrined in the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),' he said. Fredian warned that forcing the Federal power-sharing formula on Sabah would undermine the foundational trust that holds the current State Government together. He also cited the brief political manoeuvre dubbed 'Langkah Kinabalu' as a violation of that trust, stating that rewarding such an attempted coup with power-sharing would set a dangerous precedent. 'The GRS - PH Plus Sabah Government is built on mutual trust. Attempts to disrupt this, such as Langkah Kinabalu, must be rejected outright. Forcing a Federal-style unity government onto Sabah would be seen as legitimising and rewarding that betrayal,' he said. Fredian reiterated his firm support for Armizan's 'principled stand,' describing it as essential to preserving Sabah's political stability and respecting the intent of Malaysia's founding fathers. 'This is not just about political arrangements. Sabah PH-GRS seat talks still unsettled
TAWAU (Aug 12): Negotiations on seat allocations between Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) for the 17th state election remain unresolved. Sabah DAP deputy chairman Datuk Chan Foong Hin dismissed claims that GRS demanded 50 seats while PH would contest 23, labelling them 'political speculation'. 'The seat negotiations are not finalised. I don't even know the numbers,' said Chan, who is also Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister. 'We'll enter the 'ring' respectfully once a decision is made.' He was speaking to reporters after officiating at a pepper cultivation promotion programme here Tuesday. Commenting on speculation that the election (PRN17) could be held on September 7 following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's planned visit to Sabah, the Kota Kinabalu MP stated the dissolution date falls under the Chief Minister's authority. 'I don't know when the Prime Minister will visit, let alone the dissolution date.' Separately, Chan expressed Sabah DAP's confidence in defending all six seats it won in the last election, including Sri Tanjung and Elopura – now held by Warisan after the incumbents defected. Earlier, Chan said the local pepper industry recorded continuous price increases in the first seven months of this year. He said the average price for black pepper has increased by 51 per cent to RM27,240 per tonne compared to RM18,066 per tonne last year. 'Meanwhile, the average price for white pepper also increased by 43 per cent to RM37,407 per tonne compared to RM26,164 per tonne last year. 'This encouraging pepper price trend is expected to persist until the third quarter of this year following the recent strengthening of the ringgit,' he said. He said the pepper commodity is an economic resource generator for 39,449 pepper farmers in Malaysia who cultivate about 8,293 hectares of pepper. 'The total includes 248 farmers in Sabah who cultivate 41 hectares of pepper plantation. I encourage more Sabahans to take the opportunity to get involved in pepper cultivation to increase their income. 'I am of the view that the development of pepper cultivation in Sabah can be implemented by taking into account the advantages of the terrain and hilly topography suitable for pepper cultivation,' he said. Chan said the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities together with the Malaysian Pepper Board are committed and actively working to guide pepper cultivation entrepreneurs in this country, including through outreach programmes such as in-situ training and Tuesday's programme.

Russia makes sudden advance in Ukraine before Trump-Putin summit, maps show

Ukraine's authoritative DeepState war map showed on Tuesday that Russian forces had advanced by at least 10 km (six miles) north in two prongs in recent days, part of their drive to take full control of Ukraine's Donetsk region. The advance is one of the most dramatic in the last year. DeepState said the Russians had surged forward near three villages on a section of the frontline associated with the Ukrainian towns of Kostyantynivka and Pokrovsk, which Moscow is trying to encircle, exploiting Kyiv's lack of manpower. "The situation is quite chaotic, as the enemy, having found gaps in the defence, is infiltrating deeper, trying to quickly consolidate and accumulate forces for further advancement," DeepState said on its Telegram channel. U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to discuss a possible deal to end the war in Ukraine when they meet in Alaska on Friday. Unconfirmed media reports say Putin has told Trump he wants Ukraine to hand over the part of the Donetsk region that Russia does not control. There was no immediate comment on the advance from Moscow. Ukrainian military spokesperson Viktor Trehubov said only small groups were penetrating defensive lines, and that this did not amount to a breakthrough. Pasi Paroinen, a military analyst with the Finland-based Black Bird Group, said the situation had escalated rapidly, with Russian forces infiltrating past Ukrainian lines to a depth of roughly 17 km (10 miles) during the past three days. RUSSIA MAY GAIN LEVERAGE FOR TRUMP TALKS Tatarigami_UA, a former Ukrainian army officer whose Frontelligence Insight analysis tracks the conflict, posted: "In both 2014 and 2015, Russia launched major offensives ahead of negotiations to gain leverage. The current situation is serious, but far from the collapse some suggest." Sergei Markov, a former Kremlin adviser, said the Russians had been able to advance due to "a partial collapse in the front" due to Ukraine's shortage of soldiers. Ukraine has redeployed elite forces to try to thwart the advance, Russia's Interfax news agency and Ukrainian war bloggers reported. "This breakthrough is like a gift to Putin and Trump during the negotiations," Markov said, suggesting it could increase pressure on Kyiv to cede some land to prevent the Russian army eventually taking the rest of Donetsk by force. To do that, though, Russian forces would first need to take control of Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka and Kostiantynivka - four places Russian military analysts call "fortress cities". Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has publicly pushed back against the idea of ceding territory to Russia, saying any peace deal must be a just one. Bohdan Krotevych, former chief of staff of Ukraine's Azov brigade and a National Guard lieutenant colonel, took to X late on Monday to warn Zelenskiy of the threat, saying the frontline in the area was "a complete mess". Strong state-federal ties crucial for Sabah's progress, says Hajiji
RANAU: A robust partnership between the Sabah state government and the federal administration is essential for sustaining development in the region, according to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Hajiji, who chairs Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), highlighted that the collaborative governance under the GRS-Pakatan Harapan (PH) alliance has significantly advanced Sabah's progress. He emphasised the importance of stability and unity with the federal government to ensure prosperity for the people. Under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development agenda, more than 400 initiatives have been introduced, with 94% successfully executed. Hajiji noted that the GRS-PH government has rolled out unprecedented aid programmes for education and public welfare. This year, nearly 100,000 hardcore poor households in Sabah are receiving monthly assistance of RM300, a scheme set to continue if the coalition retains public support in the upcoming state election. The GRS Supreme Council has agreed to uphold its existing cooperation with PH for the election, reinforcing their shared commitment to Sabah's development. The 16th Sabah State Legislative Assembly will dissolve automatically on 11 November unless an earlier dissolution occurs. Separately, Hajiji announced that the state government, via the Sabah Housing and Town Development Authority (LPPB), remains dedicated to alleviating urban and rural poverty through new township projects. The Paginatan New Township, spanning 200 acres and located 43 km from Ranau, is expected to stimulate the local economy. The project, aligned with SMJ's welfare-focused goals, will feature government offices, shops, affordable housing, health centres, and multipurpose halls, developed in five phases. – Bernama
