Bitcoin's boom challenges anyone who believes the market is an efficient judge of value

If you want more evidence of how politics is infecting markets, consider the amazing resurgence of crypto over the past year. Bitcoin, the granddaddy of the sector, has shot up 50 per cent since last October. Meanwhile, promoters are licking their lips as they contemplate the prospects for a new wave of 'stablecoins' – digital tokens that purport to tie their value to that of an underlying asset, such as the U.S. dollar or gold. What's driving the new crypto frenzy? It's not the discovery of some grand new application for crypto. Nor is it a technological breakthrough. No, it's politics. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump and a large bipartisan swath of Congress have suddenly turned into crypto boosters. They're demolishing restrictions on crypto use and pushing forward crypto-related projects. Even if you're not a crypto investor, you should pay attention to this odd outburst of enthusiasm. The bitcoin boom challenges anyone who wants to believe that today's market is an efficient judge of value. It also undercuts those who want to believe regulators are keeping a close eye on potential abuses. In a rational world, the appropriate price for bitcoin – an intangible asset that generates no profits, pays no dividends and has no obvious practical utility – would be close to zero. Instead, it's more than US$100,000. What makes its lofty value even more baffling is crypto's long and growing criminal record. Just over a year ago, Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the massive FTX crypto exchange, was sentenced to 25 years in jail for fraud. Around the same time, Canada's own Changpeng Zhao, former head of crypto trader Binance, paid US$50-million in fines and spent four months in jail for money laundering. Meanwhile, Do Kwon, the South Korean software guru behind the TerraUSD stablecoin and Luna cryptocurrency, vanished after his creations crashed, wiping out billions of dollars in value. He was eventually apprehended and arrested and still faces court cases in multiple jurisdictions. Opinion: Canada was once a global leader in crypto. It can be one again Strangely, though, these and other lurid crypto mishaps have vanished from Washington's official memory. The U.S. capital's abrupt shift in sentiment demonstrates the amazing moral elasticity of the new administration. Mr. Trump, who once denounced crypto as a 'scam,' is now vowing to make the United States the 'crypto capital of the world.' He has issued his own personal meme coin – the term for a deliberately useless token, often created with a satirical intent – and has raised more than US$300-million from sales of it, according to a Washington Post analysis. The President is shameless in his promotion of his coin as demonstrated by the private dinner he recently held to reward the biggest buyers of his token. Some might ask if such events amount to selling presidential access to the highest bidder. Others might worry that Mr. Trump is opening the door to outright bribes laundered through purchases of his personal meme coin. In the wonderful world of Washington crypto, though, nobody seems too fussed by such ethical questions. Conflicts of interest are the new norm. Consider this week's events. On Tuesday, Mr. Trump's social media company, Trump Media and Technology Group, announced it was raising US$2.5-billion to invest in bitcoin. A day later, the U.S. Department of Labor rescinded its guidance that had previously discouraged retirement plans from offering crypto as a potential investment to their members. This might be a coincidence. Or not. Either way, it looks horrible. So does the extravagantly named GENIUS Act, now advancing rapidly through Congress with bipartisan support. It aims to legitimize stablecoins. These digital tokens attempt to address one common criticism of crypto – the fact that bitcoin and its ilk can fluctuate wildly in value. Stablecoins, as the name suggests, claim they can stabilize the value of their tokens. How? By backing them with reserves of U.S. Treasuries and other low-risk assets. It's an intriguing notion, but it raises loads of questions. Who will ensure stablecoins have the reserves they claim? What happens if a stablecoin develops problems and fails? In many ways, stablecoins look like quasi-banks, but with few of the rules that normally protect bank depositors. Critics say they will increase the fragility of the financial system. Perhaps the fundamental question here is simply, why? Stablecoins solve no obvious problem. Everything they claim to do can be done already through banks and credit cards. It's hard to understand what value can be generated from creating a digital middleman to hold government bonds for you. To be sure, you can make similar points about crypto more generally. More than 15 years after bitcoin first appeared, it is still searching for a practical application. The blockchain concept it relies upon is too clunky and slow for day-to-day use in stores or banks. And the same is true of other digital tokens despite endless tinkering and extravagant claims. Crypto shines in just two areas: enabling criminal activity and offering people a vehicle for pure fact-free speculation. So why is Washington suddenly so enthusiastic about it? Perhaps because the crypto industry accounted for nearly half of all the corporate money that flowed into the U.S. election last year, according to non-profit group Public Citizen. The generous donations appear to have bought the industry a bumper crop of new converts.

Trump Outvoted? DJT Stock Stake Slides Below 50% in Bitcoin Gamble

President Donald Trump may soon lose majority control of his own media company — and it's all because of a $2.5 billion Bitcoin bet. Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT) revealed plans Tuesday to sell a flood of new stock and convertible notes to fund a massive crypto play. The fallout? Trump's voting power could drop below 50%, stripping him of the final word over Truth Social. Confident Investing Starts Here: Bitcoin-Backed $2.5B Raise Threatens Trump's Grip on DJT The company will issue $1.5 billion in new equity and $1 billion in convertible notes, according to SEC filings. The proceeds are earmarked for direct Bitcoin purchases, making Trump Media one of the first public companies to embrace crypto at this scale. But the math is simple: more shares equals more dilution. Before the move, Trump (through a trust in Don Jr.'s name) controlled 52% of shares. After the raise, that figure could slide to 41%. That's below majority — and with no dual-class voting rights, Trump can now be outvoted by shareholders. Trump's Name, Not Trump's Call The stock trades under DJT. The brand is unmistakable. But the voting structure isn't. Trump placed his holdings in a revocable trust, which he can reclaim, but that doesn't shield him from shareholder math. The shares sold Tuesday went to institutional investors, not the Trump family. At the moment, Trump's name sits on the door. But in a corporate vote, the final say might not. University of Florida professor Jay Ritter says Trump fans might not vote against him, but that's not a certainty. 'It's unlikely 100% of the other shareholders would vote in opposition,' he said. 'But it's also not guaranteed.' Without a special share class, one angry fund could change the outcome. Convertible Notes Add Fuel to Fire The $1 billion in notes can be turned into shares at $34.72. If that happens, Trump's control slips even further. Unlike a simple raise, convertible debt brings ongoing dilution risk — every conversion chips away at the family's stake. Nunes Gets Paid, while Stock Tanks CEO Devin Nunes pulled $47.6 million in comp last year, while Trump Media booked just $3.6 million in revenue. That's a 13-to-1 pay ratio. Meanwhile, DJT stock fell 10% to $23.05 on Tuesday. The Nasdaq closed up 2.5%. Unless Trump, Don Jr., or close allies start buying back in, the numbers point to a new chapter: Trump, who once held over 52% of DJT stock, may soon become the figurehead of a company he no longer controls. Meanwhile, institutions like Vanguard and Fidelity are quietly building their footprint behind the scenes. Disclaimer & Disclosure Report an Issue

This Penny Stock Just Doubled on Plans to Become a Bitcoin Miner. Should You Buy It Now?

Founded in 2019, Signing Day Sports (SGN) is a Scottsdale, Arizona-based technology company that specializes in operating a digital platform designed to assist high school athletes in the college recruitment process. Its app enables student athletes to create comprehensive recruitment profiles, including video-verified athletic metrics, academic records, and skill footage, facilitating evaluations by college coaches and recruiters. But just like Michael Saylor-led MicroStrategy (MSTR) before, Signing Day Sports is shifting its focus to become a Bitcoin (BTCUSD) miner. As the world's most valuable cryptocurrency crossed its all-time high recently, Signing Day Sports signed a definitive agreement to acquire One Blockchain, an operating affiliate of BlockchAIn Digital Infrastructure, which specialises in crypto mining, artificial intelligence (AI), and high-performance computing (HPC) data hosting services. This led to a 242% rise in the company's stock in the past week, with its market cap now at $9 million. Signing Day Sports will exchange no monetary consideration to either One Blockchain or its equity holders as part of the deal. Instead, the transaction will be carried out using a holding company framework, through which both Signing Day Sports and One Blockchain will be reorganized as subsidiaries operating under the umbrella of BlockchAIn Digital Infrastructure. Mixed Signals from Financials Signing Day Sports' financials are nothing to write home about. In the most recent quarter, the company reported a drop in revenues to $148,358 million from $234,627 in the year-ago period. However, net losses narrowed to $842,994 compared to $2.5 million in the prior year, which is a positive development. Net cash used in operating activities remained a concern, coming in at $1.8 million. However, the company almost doubled its cash balance to close the March quarter with a cash balance of $487,384. This was higher than the figure of $259,765 in the corresponding period a year ago. Thus, while the company is on the path to profitability and is improving its liquidity position, its declining revenues revenues are worrying. Entering a Growing Market (But Some Concerns Remain) The Bitcoin mining market, on which Signing Day Sports is putting its bet on, is expected to be valued at about $4.43 billion by 2032. In the United States, the cryptocurrency market generated $1.35 billion in revenue in 2024, with projections to grow to $2.72 billion by 2030, marking a CAGR of 12.7% from 2025 to 2030. Signing Day Sports is positioning itself to become a notable player in the expanding Bitcoin mining arena through its recent acquisition of One Blockchain. BlockchAIn Digital Infrastructure, the parent entity of One Blockchain, reported revenues of roughly $26.8 million and net earnings of $5.7 million for the year 2024. It currently operates a 40 MW crypto mining hosting facility in South Carolina and is in the process of developing a 150 MW site in Texas, expected to be ready by late 2026. This new development plans to dedicate 100 MW to in-house cryptocurrency mining and 50 MW to AI and high-performance computing data hosting, thus establishing a scalable and diverse revenue platform. The acquisition also provides SGN entry into the fast-growing sectors of AI and HPC data hosting, markets that are witnessing strong demand for enhanced data processing power. By leveraging BlockchAIn Digital Infrastructure's existing capabilities and infrastructure, SGN can expand its revenue base beyond its traditional sports recruitment services. However, the deal may raise concerns among SGN shareholders as they will hold only about 8.5% of the combined company's equity, with the remaining 91.5% belonging to One Blockchain's securityholders. Moreover, Signing Day Sports lacks extensive experience in managing digital infrastructure businesses, which may present challenges in operating and scaling capital-intensive ventures such as crypto mining and AI hosting. The ultimate outcome will depend largely on SGN's effectiveness in integrating its business with BlockchAIn Digital Infrastructure's operations and workforce.
