Cole Palmer shines as Chelsea beat PSG to lift FIFA Club World Cup 2025 trophy

Indian Express14-07-2025
A cool, calm and composed Cole Palmer produced a scintillating footballing masterclass as Chelsea demolished a flat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 to win a one-sided FIFA Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Monday morning.
Chelsea's star midfielder scored twice and provided an assist for Joao Pedro in a devastating display in the revamped tournament's decider that left the European and French champions, who finished with 10 men, shell-shocked.
Having already claimed a historic treble, which included their first-ever Champions Trophy win, apart from clinching Ligue 1 and Coupe de France titles, PSG were the heavy favourites to win the title. Chelsea, on the other hand, arrived in the U.S. after winning Europe's third-tier Conference League and on the back of a domestic campaign in which they just managed a top-four Premier League finish.
The Parisian team decimated Inter Miami 4-0, Bayern Munich 2-1 and Real Madrid 4-0 in the semi-finals.
Prior to the match, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said he was expecting a 'game of chess' against PSG coach Luis Enrique, but what transpired was a swift checkmate for the Italian, who delivered a tactical masterclass.
Chelsea, who won the 2021 Club World Cup in its previous format, struck first in the 22nd minute when PSG fullback Nuno Mendes gifted possession to Malo Gusto. While his initial effort was blocked by Mendes, Gusto collected the rebound and found Palmer unmarked in the middle and the midfielder made no mistake, slotting a tidy finish just inside the left post.
Palmer doubled the lead after the 30th-minute cooling break with a goal of sublime quality. Latching onto a precise through ball from Levi Colwill, he cut inside before faking a pass to dummy a defender and firing into the bottom-left corner.
Palmer then turned provider, running up the channel before finding Joao Pedro, who took the ball in his stride and beat the offside trap before chipping his finish beautifully over keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
PSG's misery was completed when Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella's hair in the 83rd minute, as PSG's players grew in frustration as the match progressed.
The encounter turned ill-tempered at the end, with players going at each other after the final whistle, but the flare-ups quickly dissipated as Chelsea's players went to celebrate with their fans.

England stun Italy with wild comeback to book Euro 2025 final spot!

Teen sensation Michelle Agyemang kept England's title hopes alive by coming off the bench to net a dramatic equaliser in the 96th minute. Then, with just a minute remaining in extra time, fellow substitute Chloe Kelly sealed the win by smashing in the rebound from her saved penalty, sparking wild celebrations as England reached yet another final. Earlier, Italy had taken the lead through Barbara Bonansea in the first half, but Wiegman's tactical changes and substitutions turned the game in England's favour. Live Events Now, Wiegman stands on the brink of a historic third consecutive European title as a manager, while England make their third straight appearance in a major final – taking a thrilling, roundabout path to get there. The Lionesses will now face the winner of Wednesday's semi-final between Germany and world champions Spain in Basel on Sunday at 17:00 BST. England's Talking Points: England seem to have nine lives. They clawed back from 2-0 down against Sweden in the quarter-finals, were dismissed after an opening defeat to France, and looked set to exit in the 95th minute against Italy. But once again, their bench made the difference. Agyemang sparked the revival and Kelly, ever the big-game player, completed it. Kelly, who also scored the decisive goal in the Euro 2022 final, proved her ability to deliver under pressure yet again. Agyemang, who only debuted in April, now boasts three goals in just four caps and is rapidly becoming a fan favourite. England's resilience and squad depth will be major discussion points ahead of the final, though they'll know a tougher challenge awaits from either Spain or Germany – and they can't afford another slow start. Italy's Talking Points: Coming in as underdogs and ranked eight places below England, Italy were competing in their first semi-final since 1997. Coach Andrea Soncin expressed belief in his team's ability to challenge the best – and they came close. Jubilation followed Bonansea's opener, with the Italian bench celebrating wildly. But England's substitutions and tactical tweaks eventually turned the tide. Despite the heartbreak of conceding so late, Italy can take immense pride in their run – their best Euros campaign in 18 years. Standout Performers: Michelle Agyemang was the undisputed star, showing remarkable composure and confidence for a 19-year-old on such a big stage. Once a ball girl at Wembley, the Arsenal forward has now made a crucial impact in England's march to the final. Kelly again showed her big-game credentials, and defender Esme Morgan impressed after stepping in for Jess Carter. Key Stats: Agyemang is the first teenager since Cecilie Pedersen (Norway, 2009) to score twice in a single Euros tournament. Kelly's 119th-minute strike is the latest ever goal in a Women's Euros. Lucy Bronze matched Jill Scott's record of 35 appearances in major tournaments (Euros and World Cups) for the Lionesses. Italy's goal came from their first shot on target and first touch inside England's penalty area. What's Next: England will face either Spain or Germany in the Euro 2025 final on Sunday, 27 July at 17:00 BST. Italy bow out after their most impressive Euros showing since 1997, leaving the tournament with pride despite a painful finish.

Crystal Palace appeal against Europa League demotion

London, July 22 (UNI) Crystal Palace have submitted an appeal against their demotion from the Europa League to the Conference League with the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The appeal is against Uefa, which issued the punishment, French club Lyon and Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest. The Eagles were punished for breaching multi-club ownership rules as American businessman John Textor owns a stake in the club and is the majority owner of Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League. Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League last season, are expected replace FA Cup winners Palace in the Europa League should the punishment stand. In their appeal Palace have requested an annulment of the decision by Uefa's financial control body and readmission to the Europa League in place of either Forest or Lyon. A decision is expected on or before August 11, with the Europa League group stage beginning on September 24. The rules of European football's governing body state that clubs owned, to a certain threshold of influence, by the same person or entity cannot compete in the same European competition. Uefa's rules set a deadline of March 1, 2025 to show proof of multi-club ownership restructuring - a deadline Palace missed, according to a BBC news. Palace argued Textor does not hold any decisive influence at the club, but Uefa did not accept the Premier League club's defence. Speaking to The Rest is Football podcast last week, Palace chairman Steve Parish said he was "very hopeful" the decision would be overturned. "We don't think this is the right decision by any means. We know, unequivocally, that John [Textor] didn't have decisive influence over the club," he said. "We know we proved that beyond all reasonable doubt because it's a fact." UNI BM

Palace appeals to CAS against Europa League demotion

Premier League club Crystal Palace has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against UEFA's decision to remove it from the Europa League over alleged breaches of multi-club ownership regulations, the CAS said on Tuesday. Palace was demoted to the Conference League, the third-tier European competition, by UEFA's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) this month because John Textor, president of the Eagle Football Group, majority owners of Olympique Lyonnais, also has a controlling stake in Palace. Ligue 1 club Lyon, which also qualified for the second-tier continental competition, were allowed to compete. ALSO READ | Arsenal agrees deal with Sporting for striker Viktor Gyokeres — reports 'This (appeal) will be an expedited procedure with an operative decision (without grounds) to be rendered on or before 11 August 2025,' CAS said in a statement. Palace said last month that New York Jets co-owner Robert Wood 'Woody' Johnson had signed a legally binding agreement to buy Eagle Football Holding's stake in the club, subject to approval from the Premier League. Palace, however, missed the March deadline to comply with the multi-club ownership rules before winning the FA Cup in May to earn their place in European competition. Nottingham Forest, which finished seventh in the Premier League, will replace Palace in the Europa League if its appeal fails.
