On July 12, 2010, a bold new voice emerged on South African television - one that spoke our language, reflected our lives and told Mzansi-born and bred stories in a refreshing way. That voice was Mzansi Magic.
What began as a modest programming block of local series and international films has grown into a powerhouse producer and showcase of homegrown content. Over the years, Mzansi Magic has delivered award-winning shows and films, created unprecedented opportunities for local talent and played a pivotal role in shaping the South African production industry.
At its inception, the channel set out to 'engage producers and explore possibilities beyond traditional commissioning models'. That vision has been realised - and gone beyond what MultiChoice expected at its inception. Mzansi Magic's stories, stars and shows have influenced language, fashion and culture, while setting new benchmarks for local storytelling. From the beloved Lokshin Bioskop films to genre-defining dramas and reality shows, the channel has become a cultural cornerstone for Southern Africa.
Mzansi Magic has brought us unforgettable moments: the gripping drama of iNkaba (2012), the iconic Isibaya (2013), the boundary-pushing Rockville (2013), the reality sensation Date My Family (2017), and the groundbreaking Lockdown (2017). These titles didn't just entertain - they sparked conversations, launched careers and redefined what local television could be.
The channel has also nurtured new talent through initiatives like the MultiChoice Talent Factory, where graduates have gone on to contribute to some of Mzansi Magic's most beloved productions.
'For 15 years, Mzansi Magic has stood at the heart of South African entertainment — a platform where authenticity meets ambition, and where themes of family, resilience and identity are brought to life through bold storytelling and unforgettable characters,' says Nomsa Philiso, CEO of General Entertainment. 'What sets Mzansi Magic apart is not just the stories we tell, but the scale at which we tell them and the diversity they celebrate.'
As part of the celebration, viewers can look forward to a curated showcase of iconic moments, unforgettable characters and fan-favourite genres - a journey through the stories that shaped a generation. A special commemorative documentary will also spotlight the channel's legacy, the talent it has nurtured and the cultural impact it continues to make. This celebration comes to life through the Mzansi Magic Pop-Up Channel - a special, limited-time experience on DStv Channel 196 - created to honour 15 years of storytelling excellence and the audiences who made it all possible.
'Mzansi Magic has always been about stories that reflect who we are… real, raw and proudly South African,' says Shirley Adonisi, Channel Director for Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net. 'This celebration is our way of saying 'Siyabonga Mzansi' for 15 unforgettable years. Our channel was raised by the audience and we're grateful for their commitment.'
And the journey continues... With fresh content like the upcoming original crime drama Levels, starring Lunathi Mampofu and Bonko Khoza, premiering on September 7, Mzansi Magic is just getting started.
So whether you've been there since the very first 'Yoh!' or joined along the way - this is your moment to relive the magic, remember the icons and look forward to the next chapter.

From talent search to stand-up success: Sifiso Nene preps for his one-man show
Multi-award-winning comedian Sifiso Nene is on the cusp of another milestone in his blossoming career as he prepares to take the stage for his much-anticipated one-man show, Because Of Success , at the Windmill Casino's Conference Centre on August 1, 2025. Known for his ability to weave captivating narratives from ordinary stories, Nene has firmly established himself as a fresh voice in South African comedy. Originally from Durban, his journey in the entertainment industry began in earnest after he moved to Johannesburg in 2006, aiming to become a scriptwriter for the well-known comedy show, the Pure Monate Show . However, his talent for storytelling was quickly recognised, and he transitioned into stand-up comedy, where he flourished. Nene recalls a turning point in his career when he participated in the reality competition show So You Think You're Funny! hosted by David Kau. 'That show changed my life and introduced me to the whole country. Now the Laugh Africa show has rebranded me and introduced me to new audiences. The journey has opened up a lot of doors, such as performing at different significant events, festivals and appearances on TV. All these things added value to my brand, which is why I can do my tour today ,' he shared with Saturday Star . The comedian has enjoyed considerable success since then, performing at various significant events and earning a slew of accolades, including the prestigious Audience Choice Award at the second annual South African Comics Choice Awards. In 2022, Nene's engaging narrative style garnered him viral fame with his show Baby Mama Drama 2, t ackling the often sensitive topic of co-parenting with comedic grace, he explained, 'I never expected to write a second installment since I believed I had gone through all the possible baby mama drama in my first show six years ago. However, the pandemic added more elements to my story, and I decided to vent in the best way I know how: on stage.' Nene explains that his latest show draws inspiration from audience interactions with his previous comedy special, Laugh Africa , aired on Showmax. 'The title was a catchy line that they remembered from the content that I delivered,' he noted. With this performance, he aims not only to entertain but also to offer audiences a fresh perspective on life through his unique lens of humour. A testament to his growing influence, his recently garnered the Winners' Choice Award at the April 2025 Comics Choice Comedy Awards, a recognition bestowed by previous award winners. 'It puts my name on the map and in greater spaces, so I honestly appreciate it,' he expressed, reflecting on his journey thus far. ' I love what I do. I strive to get better each time. That is what fuels me. To those who want to break into the industry must come. The pie is big enough for all of us.' [email protected] Saturday Star

Tutu Puoane returns home to celebrate Lebo Mashile's poetry through jazz
Renowned jazz vocalist and Pretoria native Tutu Puoane is set to grace stages across South Africa with her much-anticipated tour, showcasing her current project, Wrapped In Rhythm . Puoane reveals that this award-winning double album is a heartfelt homage to the evocative poetry of South African poet and activist Lebo Mashile, featuring a unique blend of jazz, soul, and singer-songwriting that resonates with audiences both locally and internationally. Since relocating to Antwerp, Belgium, in 2005, Puoane explains that she has found herself profoundly inspired by Mashile's anthology, In A Ribbon Of Rhythm . For nearly a decade, the book accompanied her, stirring emotions that encapsulated her experiences as a young Black African woman navigating her identity amidst the complexities of living away from her homeland. 'Ten years ago, this book had me in a chokehold. I often find things about my country so difficult to express; it all feels so strange after being gone from home for so long, and yet I still hold a very deep connection to the land and people. The poems of Lebo helped me feel and express things I couldn't express myself.' This tour will also see Puoane performing two larger concerts in Gauteng with her full band, featuring Ewout Pierreux on piano, Shane Cooper on bass, and Sphelelo Mazibuko on drums. Following these performances, she will partner with Pierreux for intimate duo concerts in Durban, Cape Town, and Gqeberha, aiming to draw audiences close to the essence of her music and Mashile's powerful words. The full orchestral Volume 2 of Wrapped In Rhythm featuring the renowned Metropole Orkest is scheduled for global release on September 19, but concertgoers will have the distinct advantage of purchasing limited physical copies of the album on CD and vinyl at the shows. Puoane invites her audiences to experience the concert not just as a performance, but as a shared moment of connection and reflection. 'For this upcoming SA tour, I really want people to come, sit down, turn their cell phones on silent, and really drink in these words and this music. I will, of course, play some of their old-time favourites, but this is a chance for my South African audience to experience/remember the magic of Lebo Mashile's powerful 'In A Ribbon Of Rhythm.' Her excitement to return to South Africa is palpable as she expresses her love for performing in front of those who understand her cultural nuances. 'The South African audience, MY audience, is by far the best audience in the world. There's nothing like singing Sepedi to people that truly comprehend every word you're saying. It uplifts a part of my soul I don't get to feel often when I perform for an EU audience. I really would love to come home often to sing, not only once a month at a huge festival. I love singing in smaller intimate gatherings as well, so I'm really hoping that people will come out and support these few dates I have lined up.' Lebo Mashile further echoes the sentiments of their connection, recalling how Tutu's interpretation of her poetry felt like the merging of timelines during the isolation of the pandemic.' 'When Tutu started sharing her experiments online during the pandemic, and when I first heard what she and Ewout were doing in their home studio, it felt like multiple timelines were collapsing and converging at once. Across continents, in the isolation of lockdown, on social media, I felt intimately connected to Tutu's imagination of these poems and seen and affirmed in a way that no artist has ever made me feel before.' Puoane's South African tour dates are set to be Aug 1 - Market Theatre, Johannesburg; Aug 2 - State Theatre, Pretoria; Aug 6 - UKZN Jazz Centre, Durban; Aug 8 - Youngblood Gallery, Cape Town; Aug 10 - Guga S'thebe, Cape Town; and Aug 15 - The One Room, Gqeberha.
