Moves like Mmusi Maimane! Epic throwback of politician goes viral

An old clip of Mmusi Maimane performing on stage as a kwaito artist has gone viral. In it, the politician, ordained minister, and now PhD graduate rapped and bopped to his catchy song, Mjita wako kasi. Maimane – who went by his stage name Aloysia, his middle name – wrote his PhD dissertation, an autoethnography, about his journey from Soweto to Johannesburg government leadership. On the X app, user @Sentletse posted a clip of Mmusi Maimane's stint as a music artist. 'Did you all know that Dr Maimane (Mjita wako kasi) was an aspiring kwaito star?', the popular account posted. In the clip, the 45-year-old performed his song on a SABC 1 dance show. Sporting a gold chain, a floppy hat, and a toothpick in his mouth, Maimane hopped and bopped alongside his group of dancers. Responding to the clip, Mmusi jokingly posted: 'I was moving, cooking, and good-looking. 'I think I need to do a remix with Booga Luv for this December'. Mmusi Maimane has since ditched his forest of superstardom as an entertainer to take up politics instead. After resigning as leader of the Democratic Alliance in 2019, Mmusi founded the civic organisation One South Africa Movement the following year. In 2022, he established his own political party, Build One South Africa (BOSA). Apart from politics – and music – Mmusi Maimaine is also an ordained minister and an elder at the Liberty Church in Johannesburg. The father of three – who has a masters in theology – also regularly preaches at churches around South Africa and around the world. He said of his choice of career: 'Politics is about two things: it's about government and it's about influence…the only way they (Christians) will become in charge of the nation is if the nation votes for them. WATCH: ‘What's that got to do with my talent?': Actors grapple with social media influencers infiltrating TV

Linda Sokhulu and Dumisani Mbebe addressed social media influencers' infiltration of television because of their strong social media presence. Speaking on two different podcasts, actors Linda Sokhulu and Dumisani Mbebe addressed social media influencers' infiltration of the acting space because of their strong social media presence. 'Influencer category, I don't even know who did the research because for some reason they are actually associating the number of followers that one has with viewership,' Mbebe told broadcaster David Mashabela on the latter's podcast, King David Studio. In their conversation about the industry, Mashabela and Mbebe discussed the quality and quantity of television work, where Mbebe said social influencers have become a category in the television world. 'Now there's such as ugly trend where they will ask you how many followers do you have on Instagram, how many followers do you have on Twitter… all these social platforms and you ask yourself, 'what's that got to do with my talent?'' Mbebe said. 'Why do you think some guys get a lot of work, some guys are not good at what they do. All they do is just go to gym, look beautiful and they will make them shoot in like, you know, tight t-shirts or whatever,' said Mbebe. ALSO READ: 'I am appalled by the recent so-called apology issued' — Nonn Botha on Open Chats Podcast Two different jobs Echoing Mbebe, Sokhulu said there have been times when she looks up an actor whose craft she respects and will notice that they have fewer followers than a particular influencer. 'And that's not to say that the influencer, based on influencing work, should not have the followers that they have… and that's not to say that actors shouldn't have the followers that they have. For me, it says that it's two different jobs,' said Sokhulu, speaking on Relebogile Mabotja's yet-to-be-released podcast. Sokhulu added that because being an influencer and being an actor are two different jobs, the former is blending into the latter's career. I am so grateful for the opportunity to sit down with the incredible Linda Sokhulu, an actress who brings such depth and authenticity to every character she portrays. We explored the craft of acting, navigating vulnerable moments on screen, and the pressures actors face in… — Relebogile Mabotja (@RelebogileM) August 7, 2025 'That's why I don't necessarily understand it because when I'm quietly in my house, sitting there and looking at lines and trying to be earnestly focusing on what a character's needs are, or it's half past one and I'm like 'I got it!' that's what it is,' said Sokhulu sharing an idea of some of the things trained performers go through to prepare for a role. 'I'm constantly playing out in my head what my craft is asking of me. And then social media says that my relevance be 'X' number and there's a person who's got a different tier by 15 000 upper tier… it's two different things that have now somehow been forced and been made to look like one.' Mbebe said the influence of social media has led to 'pretty' television. Mbebe noted that to be an actor, one has to be ugly. 'It means it's not about you. It's not about 'Dumisani' it's about the character. If you have to be ugly in that specific scene, you gotta be ugly in that specific scene.' Open Chats Podcast faces backlash over racial comments

The hosts of Open Chats Podcast are facing backlash after a clip from a recent episode went viral for offensive content. In the clip, hosts Mthokozisi, Lefa, Busiswa, and Sonwabile are heard making disturbing remarks about members of the coloured community. Social media erupted in anger following the recent remarks made by the Open Chats Podcast hosts. Many users labelled the comments as offensive, racist, and highly disrespectful toward a significant community in South Africa. The now-deleted viral episode features several wild claims, including derogatory generalisations about coloured families and their personal relationships. One of the hosts claimed that 'Apparently Coloureds chow (have sex with) each other,' sparking immediate backlash across platforms. Another co-host responded, 'I do believe that because Coloureds are crazy.' They continued to co-sign each other, suggesting that coloured people are mentally unstable. The episode has angered many online, with some demanding an apology and others calling for the podcast's immediate removal from all platforms. @LeratoPillayZA wrote, 'I stand with Gayton on the Open Chats issue. If Blacks are offensive towards Indians, coloureds or whites: THEY SHOULD ACCOUNT. We can't tolerate Racism from any group. They have to apologise and own up to their wrongdoing.' @enzosabela wrote, 'People have been complaining about the Open Chats podcast for ages, and now they're getting heat for the things they say. They don't discuss matters of substance; it's all sex, groove and nonsense.' @IMatterthereal wrote, 'It was just a matter of time, and I believe that we all saw this coming. Open Chats isn't a podcast bro . It is just a gossip-meeting platform, they get together to gossip, insult and degrade people. All in the name of 'we are open chats and we are controversial.
