CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — Some Chapel Hill residents are on alert while the search continues for three suspects wanted for shooting at a North Carolina trooper during a chase that reached speeds around 113 mph over the weekend.
The early Saturday morning chase involving a stolen car came to a crashing end at the Timber Hollow Apartments on Timber Hollow Court near Mendel Drive.
'I looked outside. I saw two officers with lights on pull up at the side of our building. So that made me worry a little bit more about what was going on,' resident Laila Valentine said. 'I checked it a little bit later. There was more officers that came. They had the K-9 dogs sniffing around and flashlights.'
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the suspects also shot and hit several parked cars at the complex and crashed into others around 3 a.m. Saturday.

'They came through and we heard gunshots that woke us up in my apartment,' resident Avery Williams said. 'I was pretty worried. I had like a I pretty like confident and the state trooper because he was like right behind the suspects. '
The chase started just after 2:30 a.m. when a trooper with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol tried to stop a driver traveling 113 mph in a 65-mph zone on I-40 west near the 266-mile marker in Orange County, officials said.
The driver failed to stop and during the chase, the trooper confirmed the fleeing driver was in a stolen car.

There were no reports of anyone injured.
The three suspects then crashed the stolen car dead end of Mendel Drive. The ski-masked-wearing suspects jumped out of the wrecked car and took off running through nearby woods.
Neighbors woke up to the gunfire along with flashing police lights and sirens.
'A car was getting chased by a state trooper, then they came through and we heard gunshots that woke us up in my apartment,' Williams added. 'And this is our neighbor's car. It was shot here. But you can see the bullet hole. But on another car, two windows were broken. You can see the glass on the ground.'
Timber Hollow residents told CBS 17 that their apartment management notified them to be on alert as the search goes on for the three armed and dangerous suspects.
Officers said anyone with information about the shooting and chase should contact 911 or the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760. Callers who wish to remain anonymous can call Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crimestoppers at 919-942-7515.

Bakersfield man accused of killing estranged wife makes first court appearance

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man accused of killing his estranged wife last month at a house in east Bakersfield made his first court appearance Monday, more than a week after he was first scheduled to be arraigned. Rafael Estrada, 44, pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, four counts of willful cruelty to a child, spousal abuse, allowing or causing injury to an elder or dependent adult, recklessly evading a peace officer, driving a vehicle in the opposite direction of traffic and resisting arrest. Several prior arraignment dates were postponed. No reason for the postponements was given in court. Court Commissioner Samantha Allen ordered Estrada held without bail. His next hearing is scheduled June 20. Around 8:30 p.m. on May 28, deputies were called to a house in the 2400 block of Monterey Street to reports that a man had seriously injured his wife. They arrived and found Taylor Danay Dominguez Estrada, 32, with 'severe trauma,' according to sheriff's officials. She was declared dead at the scene. Family members have told 17 News that Rafael Estrada showed up to a party uninvited and slit his wife's throat in front of at least one child. Rafael Estrada was spotted by sheriff's helicopter driving away in a white truck before deputies arrived, officials said. Deputies located and chased the pickup until the pursuit ended about 10 miles away in the 9900 block of Ramos Avenue. Officials said a K-9 was used to take Estrada into custody. Nigerian Catholic priest who had recently served in the US abducted by extremists, church says

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — A Nigerian Catholic priest who recently served in the United States has been abducted by extremists along with other travelers in northeast Nigeria's Borno state, the church said. The Rev. Alphonsus Afina was kidnapped on June 1 near the northeastern town of Gwoza, close to the border with Cameroon, by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram, Bishop John Bogna Bakeni of Maiduguri told The Associated Press on Sunday. Bakeni said that he spoke with the priest over the phone a day after the abduction. Afina, though exhausted from trekking, was 'sounding OK' and 'in good spirits' during the brief conversation, according to the bishop. The priest was traveling from the city of Mubi, where he is based, to Maidiguri, the capital of Borno, for a workshop when his convoy was ambushed by armed men while waiting for clearance at a military checkpoint, he said. A rocket-propelled grenade hit one of the vehicles, killing one person and wounding others, according to the bishop. Bakeni said it was difficult to determine if the priest was specifically targeted, given the number of travelers caught in the ambush. Other travelers were also abducted, he said, although it was unclear how many. Nigerian authorities haven't publicly commented on the abductions and didn't respond to requests for comment. Rev. Robert Fath, the vicar general of the diocese of Fairbanks, Alaska, told the Anchorage Daily News on Thursday that he had received a phone call from Boko Haram confirming they had Afina. Afina served in Alaska from 2017 to 2024 before returning to Nigeria, where he works with the Justice, Development and Peace Commission, a Catholic social justice group. Nigerian authorities are struggling to stem rising violence in the north and central regions where armed groups, including Boko Haram, target rural communities, killing thousands and abducting people to ransom. The attacks sometimes target religious figures such as clerics. In March, a priest in central Nigeria was kidnapped and killed by unidentified armed men. Boko Haram, Nigeria's homegrown jihadis, took up arms in 2009 to fight Western education and impose their radical version of Islamic law. The conflict has spilled into Nigeria's northern neighbors and resulted in the death of around 35,000 civilians and the displacement of more than 2 million others, according to the United Nations.
