Underwater robot finds college athlete dead in reservoir, Utah officials say
On Aug. 16,22-year-old Deng Ador was in Blackridge Reservoir with Sa Mafutaga, 21, when Ador began struggling in the water, according to a Facebook post by the Herriman City Police Department.
Mafutaga, who was able to get back to the shore, went back into the water to try and help Ador but wasn't able to, police said. Ador was about 35 yards from shore when he went underwater, according to police.
Mafutaga was treated at the scene and sent to a hospital where he's expected to fully recover, police said.
Ador's body was found roughly five hours later by a dive team using an underwater robot, officials said.
'We are devastated to learn of Deng's passing. On behalf of our university community, our love and sincere condolences are with his family during this difficult time. We also wish his friends and teammates in Omaha, North Dakota, and Salt Lake City family, peace as they process this tragic loss,' University of Nebraska at Omaha's director of athletics, Adrian Dowell, said in a news release.
Ador had recently joined the University of Nebraska at Omaha's basketball team, the Mavericks.
Previously, Ador was a basketball player for the University of North Dakota where he appeared in 42 games and averaged 5.7 points per game, helping lead the team to the Summit League Tournament semifinals during the 2024-25 season, the university said in a release.
'He had the biggest smile, one that could brighten any room, and a natural gift for cheering people up. Deng leaves behind six siblings: Angelina, Achol, Christina, Ngor, Achan, and Nyanbol, and our devoted parents, Alei and Abele. Though our hearts are broken, our love for him will never fade,' a GoFundMe page said.
Anyone who may have seen the incident is asked to call 801-858-0035, police said.
Herriman is about a 25-mile drive southwest from Salt Lake City.

Watch: Notre Dame's new starting quarterback CJ Carr's high school highlight reel
While we haven't seen much of Notre Dame football's new starting quarterback CJ Carr at this level, we can go back and look at what he did in high school. Coming out of Saline High School in Michigan, Carr was a nationally ranked prospect as the No. 68 overall recruit in the 2024 class according to the 247Sports Composite. Sure, we saw him during the past two years of Blue and Gold games, but those are set up for success for the quarterbacks. During his final season of high school, Carr would throw for 2,754 yards with 24 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, while running for 91 yards, but accounting for 9 other scores. Over his three years starting, he threw for a total of 8,135 yards with 78 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, while accounting for 312 yards rushing and 16 scores. Those are very impressive numbers from Carr, and hopefully he can replicate that success with the Irish. Check out below his senior year highlights, for a glimpse of what is to come when Notre Dame takes the field on the road against Miami at the end of the month. Steelers' Cam Heyward apologizes to Aaron Rodgers over past controversial comments
Aaron Rodgers has more than earned the respect and admiration of his Pittsburgh Steelers teammates, but it didn't start off that way, and Cam Heyward recently apologized for some comments he made early in the offseason. On Tuesday, Rodgers and DK Metcalf made special guest appearances on the Not Just Football with Cam Heyward podcast, and the Steelers defensive tackle wasted little time addressing the months-old controversy — specifically about whether the 20-year veteran QB really wanted to play in Pittsburgh. "I have to apologize," Heyward told Rodgers. "I guess my words were taken out of context when I said, 'Do you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or not?'" Rodgers admitted to being hurt but understood that Heyward didn't necessarily know who he really was at the time of the negotiating process. The veteran Steelers defender admitted his opinion has changed since. Before Rodgers signed, Steelers safety DeShon Elliott also fired a jab at the four-time MVP — claiming on social media that he should "leave his a-- at the retirement home." Both Heyward's and Elliott's comments stirred up controversy when first made, leading some Steelers fans to believe Rodgers might not sign at all. That's been the overarching theme of Rodgers' career over the past few years — many within the NFL world jumping to criticize, only to walk back their original stance on the veteran quarterback. Nearly 2 dozen children seized from Los Angeles couple accused of surrogacy scam
[Source] Authorities removed 21 children from the custody of a Los Angeles couple after discovering a surrogacy operation that allegedly deceived multiple surrogate mothers across the country. Business busted: The investigation began in May when a 2-month-old baby was hospitalized with head injuries, prompting police to respond. Soon, officers discovered 15 more infants and toddlers under the care of six nannies at a nine-bedroom mansion in Arcadia. Surveillance footage revealed physical abuse of the children, including one nanny shaking the injured infant. Guojun Xuan, 65, and Silvia Zhang, 38, were arrested May 9 on suspicion of felony child endangerment but released four days later without charges. Six more children were later removed from other locations, bringing the total to 21 children under 13 years old. How the scheme ran: Xuan and Zhang operated their business, Mark Surrogacy, from their Arcadia home. Recruiting through Facebook, Zhang allegedly provided different accounts to various surrogates, telling some she had only one daughter. Court records, on the other hand, show she told a Los Angeles judge that she and Xuan had at least a dozen children. Trending on NextShark: Surrogates were allegedly paid tens of thousands of dollars each and told they were helping a couple struggling with infertility. Police had responded to at least six calls at the property since January 2022, including reports of suspected child abuse and illegal business operations. The big picture: The case highlights regulatory gaps in the commercial surrogacy industry, particularly involving international clients seeking U.S. citizenship for newborns. Research shows that between 2014 and 2020, 41.7% of foreign intended parents using U.S. surrogacy services were Chinese nationals. Zhang told investigators she wanted many children after seeing how China's one-child policy had damaged families. What's next: Authorities are still searching for 56-year-old Chunmei Li, the nanny who allegedly abused the hospitalized infant. The FBI has also joined the investigation, interviewing surrogates about potential baby-selling operations. At least two women reportedly remain pregnant with children arranged through Mark Surrogacy, with one surrogate considering legal options to become the child's foster parent. Meanwhile, the injured baby remains in medical care, and the other 21 children in foster care, as investigation continues.
