
Some of Chicago's hottest restaurants are losing business to reservation piracy; Illinois state lawmaker wants to stop it
Bad actors are scooping up reservations at hot spots and trying to sell them for big money. It's known as reservation piracy or reservation scalping.
Whether it drinks or food, many restaurants require reservations, and at Piccolo Sogno in West Town, the tables fill up quickly, especially on weekends.
"We are 99% always fully booked," owner Ciro Longobardo said.
Across the city, some restaurants relying solely on electronic reservations are running into a problem.
"We have these third-party software companies. They're going on, they're taking up all of the reservations that are free on OpenTable, Resy, Tock; and then they're reselling them, for sometimes hundreds of dollars," said Illinois state Rep. Margaret Croke (D-Chicago).
Yet when customers purchase the third-party reservation, rather than from legitimate sites like OpenTable, they hit a snag, and find out they don't actually have a reservation.

after hearing from several restaurant owners.
"They told me about how people would come in thinking they had a reservation when they didn't, and how angry people were," Croke said. "They told me about how they didn't even have people wanting to walk in in the neighborhood, because they always thought the restaurant was going to be fully booked."
It's costing restaurants big time.
"I don't like at all, the buying of the reservations, the selling. You know, I'm going to prepare for a busy night, and all of sudden I have 50-70 customers not show," Longobardo said.
That's why at Piccolo Sogno, they refuse to rely entirely on reservation apps.
"It's good, but I'm not going to let an electronic system to run my business," Longobardo said.
It's not just restaurants getting targeted.
OpenTable is sending users emails reminding them to be suspicious of emails, text messages and calls from restaurants trying to verify reservations. It's all in attempt to get passwords and access to credit cards numbers.
"It's always in a situation where it's imperative that you answer questions quickly, and that's what we call the tip off to the rip off," Better Business Bureau Chicago president Steve Bernas said. "Ultimately it comes down to identity theft, which is still the fastest growing white collar crime today."
The measure Croke has introduced in Springfield would prevent third-party services from listing, advertising, promoting, or selling reservations for restaurants without a written agreement.
It also would allow restaurant owners to take legal action and sue unauthorized third-party companies that buy their reservation spots without authorization. Violators could face fines of up to $1,000 per reservation posted.

Perplexity ( is offering $34.5 billion to buy Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google Chrome business. Alphabet could be forced to sell Google Chrome as part of an antitrust resolution, but Wall Street seems to be dismissing Perplexity as a serious potential Chrome buyer, given that the reported offer is greater than the artificial intelligence (AI) startup's $18 billion valuation. The AI startup only worth about 18 billion dollars according to its latest funding rounds. So some of the funds would have to come from outside investors, it was an unsolicited offer, and it comes ahead of US antitrust proceedings that could force alphabet to sell the well web browser. It seems like most of the street is not seeing this as terribly realistic, but I want to talk about sort of how this fits into the broader AI landscape. Adam Kovac which is with us now as well chamber progress, CEO and founder Paul Meeks of Freedom Capital markets is still with me as well, and Adam as we look at the AI landscape here. Perplexity is not as much of a household name within AI is this just a marketing move on its part? Yeah, I think their hottest product is publicity. I think these offers keep Wall Street buzzing without them having to spend a dime. You know, one week, uh, we hear that the big tech wants to buy perplexity, the next week they're kind of swaggering in as a potential buyer back in March. They said they, you know, they were, we're putting in a bid to uh, to buy tick tock. Tick Tock wasn't for sale. Uh, I think the press clip is the point, right? As you noted, um, the the value of Chrome is double or more than perplexity's own value, and the check would be bigger than the balance sheet. I think you're selling headlines, not buying browsers, but look, I mean I think founders know that swagger can kind of goose valuations, uh, getting their name uttered in the same breath as Chrome kind of signals Big League, right? It sets a higher price uh, for if someone tries to scoop you up, and let's face it, it kind of worked. We're here talking about perplexity, aren't we? Right? So unfortunately for them, it's not about how valuable their core product is. Well, but Paul, you know, when you look at the Chrome situation, the Alphabet situation, um, do you think that they are going to be forced to spin off Chrome? I mean we've talked to some analysts who say even if they do, it's not necessarily a bad thing for Alphabet. I agree that it won't necessarily be a bad thing, but I think when you get to the end of the day, I don't think that the Feds are going to force uh, the divestiture. So this uh, deal or proposed deal by perplexity AI so premature, the other thing that's going on with perplexity AI, though I do think perplexity AI is a real deal company is it's rumored that they may sell themselves to Apple. And so you want to crank up the PR machine to drive up your valuation so Apple takes you out at bigger price. So I think that might also be at play here. AmEx Gets a Taste of Toast: And a Bigger Bite of Hospitality?
American Express Company AXP has formed a multi-year strategic partnership with Toast, Inc. TOST, a restaurant technology platform, to elevate hospitality experiences. As part of this move, AmEx is integrating guest data from its restaurant reservation platforms, Resy and Tock, into Toast's hardware and software systems. This means servers using Toast Go handhelds or POS terminals will now be able to access real-time guest preferences, enabling more personalized service. In addition, Resy and Tock listings will become visible on Toast's platforms, like Local by Toast and Toast Tables. Do Londoner's eat their dinner at 6pm
According to OpenTable, 6pm has become an increasingly popular time for dinner reservations, up 11 per cent in London and 6 per cent UK-wide, compared to the same period last year. In fact, Zonal, a hospitality tech service, says that the new average time to dine in the UK is as early as 6.12 people are reportedly also opting for earlier dinners. 'Eating out is becoming a way to socialise without compromising other goals,' Linda Haden, insights specialist at hospitality analysts Lumina Intelligence tells The Times. 'We're seeing more smoothies and fewer cocktails on dinner tables.'
