Man sentenced for attempted murder of woman
A man has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempted murder after his assault on a woman left her with life-threatening injuries. Paul John Watts, 36, attacked the woman at Cinderford Close in Paulsgrove in Portsmouth last October. The woman has has no memory of the assault and is still recovering from her injuries. Watts, who will also serve an extended license period of five years, was found guilty at Portsmouth Crown Court on Tuesday. Hampshire Constabulary said it was called out shortly after 15:10 GMT on 31 October after concerns were raised for a 37-year-old woman. She was taken to Southampton General Hospital with "serious, potentially life-threatening injuries" and discharged from hospital earlier this year. Police said during sentencing the judge told Watts that he left her bleeding and unconscious, and "left her for dead". In a statement read to the court, her sister said: "She will never be the same again because of what Paul did that day, but with support from family and friends, her and her children will find their new normal. "I have no doubt in my mind about how far she has come, the strength and courage she has shown throughout and that she will continue to progress and will not let what happened that day define her." Senior investigating officer Elizabeth Brunt said: "The victim's injuries in this case were shocking, her recovery has been exceptional given the trauma that she endured. "Thankfully she has no memory of what happened last October. "Watts subjected the victim to violence that nobody should have to face and I'm pleased that this sentence underlines the gravity of what he did." Stab victim killed in alleged drugs debt row
An 19-year-old, found fatally stabbed in an alley way in a Hampshire village, was killed in a row over a drugs debt, a court has heard. Tawana Choruma was discovered seriously injured in Station Road, Netley Abbey, on 19 December and died at the scene. Dominic Adeyemi, 18, of Holmes Close in Netley Abbey denies murder. His trial at Southampton Crown Court was told Mr Adeyemi stabbed Mr Choruma after a meeting was set up with him and his friend Jack Hibbert who owed Mr Adeyemi £600. Prosecution barrister Sarah Jones told the jury: "It was a senseless death arising from tensions caused by drugs, drug dealing and the debts people accrue." Ms Jones described how a meeting between the three man had been arranged in the Station Road area of Netley Abbey because of Mr Hibbert's debt to Mr Adeyemi. Mr Adeyemi was "pursuing his debt with tenacity and relentlessness", she told the jury. "It is clear there was considerable suspicion between the parties," she said. She said Mr Choruma was stabbed by Mr Adeyemi shortly after making a phone call at 18:21 GMT. She said Mr Choruma was left in a "dark lonely place, bleeding to death". Several passers-by, including a former nurse, administered CPR until first responders arrived. But Ms Jones said, given the extent of his injuries, there was "no chance" of saving Mr Choruma's life. A post-mortem examination showed he died from a 15cm-deep stab wound to the abdomen. A car driver in a nearby street later said she saw a man with an "intense wide-eyed hostile stare" shortly after the time of the attack, the court was told. The jury was also told that a knife was found in Mr Choruma's trousers. The trial continues. You can follow BBC Hampshire & Isle of Wight on Facebook, X (Twitter), or Instagram.
