Ontario couple vows to play Lotto 6/49 for a year — then wins $2.5M jackpot
Last fall, Blaine Parrington and Evelyne Rainville made a simple pact: they'd play Lotto 6/49 every Wednesday for one year and see what happened. Six months in, the Sturgeon Falls, Ont., couple found themselves $2.5 million richer.
The couple's $3 Lotto 6/49 ticket matched the winning numbers in the April 2, 2025 Classic Draw. Their ticket was one of two that split the $5 million jackpot.
While the retirees have been casual lottery players for nearly 15 years, dabbling in both jackpot and Instant games, this was their first major win.
'I scanned our Lotto 6/49 ticket on the store's ticket checker and saw the 'Big Winner' message. When I asked the store clerk to validate our ticket, the lottery terminal froze. An OLG representative called and confirmed we'd won $2.5 million,' said Parrington.
'I was amazed and shocked. It was a feeling that can't be explained into words.'
With happy tears in his eyes, he rushed home to share the life-changing news with his loved ones.
'I was astonished,' Rainville said, recalling the moment she found out they were now millionaires.
'That afternoon, we had family over and told them about our winning ticket. Everyone was very happy for us, including our son, whom we video chatted with and sent a picture of the validation slip. It was a surreal and exceptionally overwhelming moment.'
Parrington also shared the exciting news with his daughter, whose reaction was one he won't forget.
'I reached out to my daughter, but she was busy and had to call me back,' said Parrington.
'After seeing the text message I'd sent her, she returned my call. When I answered, she was singing the Barenaked Ladies song, 'If I Had $1,000,000.' It was such a wholesome moment.'
The funny response was a reminder of how surreal this win felt for Parrington and Rainville — and how much joy it brought their entire family. With the prize now in hand, the couple is looking forward to a more relaxed and fulfilling chapter of life.
'I enjoy fishing, so I'm looking to buy a new boat,' said Parringon.
'I'd like to upgrade my car, and we'd love to plan a trip within Canada to see the Rocky Mountains,' added Rainville. 'We'll also share this prize with our children and grandchildren, complete some renovations, and make some investments for our future.'
The duo's winning numbers were 18, 26, 35, 40, 43, 47, and the ticket was purchased at RX Drug Mart on King Street in Sturgeon Falls, Ont.
Lotto 6/49 gives players a chance to win two jackpots every Wednesday and Saturday for $3 per play. The Classic Draw offers a fixed $5 million jackpot, while the Gold Ball Draw guarantees at least $1 million — or a growing jackpot that starts at $10 million and can climb past $60 million.
From a playful weekly tradition to a multi-million dollar win, Parrington and Rainville are proof that sometimes all it takes is one good idea and a little bit of luck.

SSSniperWolf Clowns Drake After He Tells the World She Left Him on Read: 'Made Headlines for Leaving a Rapper on Read'
The internet is eating up a crossover nobody saw coming: one of YouTube's most recognizable creators, SSSniperWolf, and global rap superstar Drake. The moment went public on August 9, when Drake casually revealed during Adin Ross' livestream that he once slid into SSSniperWolf's DMs and was promptly turned down. On her Instagram Story the next morning, SSSniperWolf, real name Alia Shelesh, posted a casual mirror selfie wearing a grey crop top and white shorts with the caption: 'Good morning, Made headlines for leaving a rapper on read lol' Her nonchalant response lit up social media, cementing this as yet another viral Drake-adjacent saga in the rapper's long history of headline-making interactions with women. The Livestream Confession During the livestream, Drake turned to Adin Ross with an oddly specific question: 'I was gonna ask if it was you that made me DM SniperWolf that one time.' Ross appeared uncertain, replying: 'I mean, maybe, I don't know. So what happened then? Did that go anywhere?' Drake then revealed the short-lived nature of their exchange: 'She told me that she had a man and then I was like, well… can we fight to the death? And then that was the… I think that was the end of the DM.' The offhand admission instantly went viral, prompting a storm of commentary about Drake's approach and his age. Social Media's Savage Take Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram comments were ruthless. The prevailing theme: disbelief that a 37-year-old rap icon is still publicly recounting his dating misfires. 'Man is almost 40 yet behaves like he just turned 18.' 'This dude is like 40 years and still talks about his interactions with women like he's in middle school. Makes sense actually.' 'Drake too damn big to be doing these corny ass streams.' 'Nobody thinks a dude actin like that in his 40s is weird? ' Some fans found it amusing; others saw it as yet another example of Drake oversharing in situations where the woman involved didn't seem interested. SSSniperWolf: Gaming Star Turned Internet Mogul Alia 'SSSniperWolf' Shelesh has built one of the most successful personal brands on YouTube, blending gaming content, reaction videos, lifestyle vlogs, and pop culture commentary. With millions of subscribers and an even larger social media presence, she's become a rare crossover creator who can make headlines outside the gaming space. Her refusal of Drake's advance fits her long-standing brand: playful, self-aware, and slightly cheeky when it comes to internet drama. Her quick, almost dismissive response on Instagram only amplified the moment. Drake in the Middle of a Busy Year The revelation comes while Drake is in Europe for his 'Some Special Shows 4 U' tour alongside PartyNextDoor, celebrating the release of their debut joint album Some Sexy Songs 4 U (2025). In recent weeks, the Toronto rapper has been spotted strolling through Brussels on an off day and made headlines earlier this month for postponing a Manchester show due to 'unforeseen circumstances.' Despite the mounting social chatter, Drake has yet to respond publicly to SSSniperWolf's cheeky Instagram comment, leaving fans to wonder whether the rapper will brush it off or turn it into another bar in a future track. Also per the MRC, ''Invalid Traffic' is defined generally as traffic that does not meet certain ad serving quality or completeness criteria, or otherwise does not represent legitimate ad traffic that should be included in measurement counts. Among the reasons why ad traffic July be deemed invalid is it is a result of non-human traffic (spiders, bots, etc.), or activity designed to produce fraudulent traffic.'CONTACT: Nina Talcott ntalcott@

Club Attempts Record for 'World's Largest Tamagotchi Wedding' as More Than 100 Digital Pets Wed in Ceremony
The Toronto Tamagotchi Club aimed to "make history" with its latest meet-up, and is submitting the results to Guinness World RecordsNEED TO KNOW A club in Toronto, devoted to the appreciation of Tamagotchis, attempted to set a world record for Tamagotchi marriages over the weekend The Toronto Tamagotchi Club announced the event a month before, and more than 100 Tamagotchis ended up getting married in one sitting on Sunday, Aug. 10 'Growing up into an adult, where this community has kind of become more niche, it's been harder to find people who have them," one attendee said of such fan eventsI now pronounce you... Tamagotchi and Tamagotchi! Dozens of Tamagotchi fans and collectors met up in Toronto on Sunday, Aug. 10, to witness and take part in what was touted as the "World's Largest Tamagotchi Wedding" — where more than 100 digital pets tied the knot. Toronto Tamagotchi Club first announced the mass digital pet wedding last month, revealing on Instagram that its members were angling for a Guinness World Record. While it's not yet clear if the strong showing of digital love did in fact break any records — Guinness did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for confirmation on Monday, Aug. 11 — the wedding event drew an impressive 180 people to the Cecil Community Centre in Toronto, according to Toronto Today. "What is a Tamagotchi wedding? Imagine a mass marriage, Tama style," the club wrote on Instagram. "Tama characters can get married to other devices in-game. Let's celebrate love and friendship in our community, and find your Tamagotchi character a mate IRL! Marry your Tamagotchi and make history, or come party to celebrate gotchi luv!" According to the Tamagotchi Wiki, while the toys were first made available in 1996, iterations of the digital pets introduced since 2004 have the ability to get hitched. There are multiple ways for Tamagotchis to tie the knot, including through interlocking two devices. Twoey Gray, the club's founder, told Toronto Today that the goal of Sunday's event was to make a 'mark on history," with no preexisting records on the books for Tamagotchi nuptials. Gray confirmed to the outlet that more than 100 digital pets got married during the ceremony, which kicked off around 1 p.m. local time. While the club still has to submit to Guinness World Records, the effort was certainly there. Organizers set up cards around the venue to direct Tamagotchi owners to those with a similar-model digital pet, making it easier to find a perfect match, according to Toronto Today. When that happens, the characters appear on each other's screens with confetti and hearts, prompting a new digital pet to be hatched from an egg. 'When I was 8, you'd be on the playground and there would be other kids that had them and you could match them together. But growing up into an adult, where this community has kind of become more niche, it's been harder to find people who have them," attendee Holden Levack told Toronto Today of connecting with other Tamagotchi fans. Twoey first launched the group in 2022, telling Toronto Today that there's "something very equalizing about this game." Fellow Tamagotchi lovers seem to agree, as photos shared by the club on Sunday showed people packed into the venue, posing with pets and signing wedding cards. Some fans even brought giant congratulatory signage, wore wedding dresses of their own, and documented the fireworks that went down when their digital pets sealed their unions.
