Former municipal manager arrested for Sindiso Magaqa's killing
The 55-year-old official was arrested on Monday in Malvern in Durban.
He was previously arrested in 2018 with the late mayor of Harry Gwala district municipality, a businessman Mbulelo Mpofana, two former police officers Sbonelo Myeza and Mlungisi Ncalane, and Sibusiso Ncengwa.
The former municipal manager is expected to appear in Umzimkhulu magistrate's court on Tuesday.
Ncengwa, a self-confessed hitman, has since been sentenced for Magaqa's murder.
He was sentenced to 25 years for conspiracy to commit murder, 25 years for murder, 15 years for three counts of attempted murder, nine years for malicious damage to property, 10 years for unlawful possession of a firearm and one year for possession of ammunition. The sentences are to run concurrently.
Ncengwa was already serving 95 years in prison for armed robbery convictions.
At the time of his murder, Magaqa was attached to the Umzimkhulu local municipality. He was shot dead while two other councillors survived the hit.
The police political killings task team took over the case in July 2018 after the formation of the unit. Within a month, the first hitman, Ncengwa, was arrested by the team.
Three other co-accused — Myeza, Mpofana and Ncalane — were charged with conspiracy to murder, murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and malicious damage to property.
Ncalane has been declared unfit to stand trial after two psychiatric reports revealed he was mentally ill. He is a patient at Fort Napier Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. The trial of the other two suspects is scheduled for October.

'Serial rapist' who found victims on dating site arrested

Life sentence for security guard who raped minor at residential complex
A man who raped a child on the first day of work at a residential complex in Florida, Roodepoort, has been handed a life sentence. Mpho Antonio Lebona, 26, was arrested on the day of the rape of the 14-year-old girl in January 2021 because residents in the complex reacted quickly to the victim's report of the attack, said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane. It was Lebona's first day of employment as a security officer at the complex. "He had been tasked with overseeing access to the complex's communal washing area. The victim, who resided at the complex, approached Lebona to unlock the washing area. The victim's parents were at work during the commission of the offence. The accused locked the door behind them and raped the victim, and inflicted a bite wound on her neck." Roodepoort regional court prosecutor Claude Payne presented victim impact statements from the girl and her mother which highlighted the trauma, particularly the loss of the victim's virginity. Ten SAPS, EMPD officers in court for fraud and corruption
Ten South African Police Service and Ekurhuleni metropolitan police officers were arrested while on duty on Monday for their alleged role in corruption and fraud. They are expected to appear in the Germiston magistrate's court on Tuesday. 'It is alleged that on June 4 during a multidisciplinary operation by law enforcement, the accused officers raided a shop in Edenvale where they seized cigarettes and took R35,000 in cash and three packs of headache tablets to the value of about R5,000,' Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Lizzy Suping said. The nine constables and a sergeant arrested the cashier for trading in illicit cigarettes and another employee for violating immigration laws.
