Yamuna's pollution worsens, bacteria levels 4,000 times the safe limit: Report

Despite the Capital enjoying nearly a month of clean air, its pollution troubles are far from over. A new status report from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) paints a grim picture of the Yamuna. The river's quality has deteriorated compared to June, with several indicators far exceeding permissible limits.
The worst parameter is the faecal coliform level, an indicator of the presence of bacteria that's directly linked to untreated sewage — it is around 4,000 times the safe limit of 2,500 MPN/100ml set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The river, which flows about 22 km through Delhi, enters the Capital at Palla.
A comparison of the report dated July 17 and sampled on July 1 with the previous month's report reveals that the pollution levels in the river have worsened.
At Palla, the river's Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) is 8 mg/l, already much higher than the CPCB's safe limit of 3 mg/l or less. BOD is a significant water quality parameter that indicates the amount of oxygen required to break down organic material in the water.
July data suggests a sharp spike in organic pollution, particularly between Palla and ITO (70 mg/l). Asgarpur, where the river exits Delhi, shows a slight improvement (24 mg/l), though it remains well above safe limits.
This escalating BOD along the Yamuna's course through the city signals a substantial and worsening discharge of untreated or poorly treated wastewater into the river. Twenty-two drains open directly into the river, out of which a few remain partially tapped, according to official records.
In June, BOD levels at the same sites were significantly lower: 5 mg/l at Palla, 8 mg/l at Wazirabad, 31 mg/l at ISBT, 46 mg/l at ITO, 40 mg/l at Nizamuddin, 30 mg/l at Okhla Barrage, 38 mg/l at Agra Canal, and 44 mg/l at Asgarpur.
Equally concerning are the Dissolved Oxygen (DO) levels, essential for aquatic life, which have witnessed a significant drop over the past month.
It has dipped even at Palla and Wazirabad, where DO levels usually remain above the safe limit.
At Wazirabad, DO levels have plummeted from 6.3 mg/l in June to just 3.4 mg/l in July, below the minimum safe threshold. Further downstream, oxygen levels fall to zero, and only slightly recover to 0.9 mg/l at Asgarpur. The near-total depletion of oxygen renders large stretches of the Yamuna uninhabitable for aquatic organisms.
The most alarming figures, however, are the faecal coliform levels. At ITO Bridge, it was recorded at 92,00,000 MPN/100 ml — over 4,000 times the permissible limit.
Across most locations, the faecal coliform count has worsened since June. Palla recorded 2,700 MPN/100 ml in July (up from 2,100), and Wazirabad 3,900 (up from 2,600).
Downstream, the levels were more than 1,000 times the maximum permissible limit: 28,00,000 at ISBT Bridge, 92,00,000 at ITO Bridge, 11,00,000 at Nizamuddin Bridge, 22,00,000 at Okhla Barrage, 21,00,000 at the Agra Canal near Okhla, and 7,90,000 at Asgarpur.
The July report also reveals a steep year-on-year rise in contamination. For instance, while Asgarpur recorded the worst contamination levels in July 2024, ITO records the highest pollution levels this year.
The DPCC has been submitting these monthly reports, after analysing water samples at eight locations on Delhi's stretch of the Yamuna, in compliance with National Green Tribunal directives.

India's cholesterol crisis: why dyslipidemia is the next big public health challenge

Changing lifestyle patterns have given rise to a host of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in India, including diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia. A recent cross-sectional study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research–India Diabetes (ICMR-INDIAB), assessed a representative sample of individuals aged 20 years and older, drawn from urban and rural areas of 31 States, Union Territories, and the National Capital Territory of India found that dyslipidemia was prevalent in 81.2 % of the total of 1,13,043 individuals (79,506 from rural areas and 33,537 from urban areas) who participated in the survey. This presents a worrying scenario, one where individuals as young as 20 are already showing signs of abnormal lipid profiles, significantly increasing their risk of developing heart disease and other complications later in life. If left unchecked, this can snowball into a major public health challenge for our country. Understanding dyslipidemia To understand dyslipidemia, we need to understand what cholesterol is. Cholesterol is a fat-like substance found in all cells of our body. Cholesterol travels through the body in small packages called lipoproteins. Lipoproteins are of three types: LDL or low-density lipoprotein known as 'bad cholesterol', HDL or high-density lipoprotein known as 'good cholesterol', and triglycerides. LDL is bad because it leads to a buildup of cholesterol in our arteries, which can lead to plaque build-ups and potentially cause blockages, which can eventually cause a heart attack or a stroke. HDL or high-density lipoprotein is good for the body because it carries cholesterol from other parts of the body back to the liver which removes the cholesterol from the blood. Triglycerides are also bad for the body; they are a type of fat stored in your body and used for energy. They increase when you consume more calories (especially sugar and fat) than your body needs. High triglyceride levels can contribute to hardening or thickening of the arteries, increasing the risk of stroke, heart attack, and pancreatitis. To check for dyslipidemia, all three types of lipids are tested: if LDL and triglycerides are more than 100 mg/dl and 150 mg/dl respectively and HDL is lower than 40 mg/dl in men and 50 mg/dl in women, it means your body has high cholesterol levels that need to be brought under control. The South Asian problem The South Asian population in general, is more prone to NCDs such as dyslipidemia and diabetes due to a genetic risk, lack of physical activity, and suboptimal dietary habits. Our population tends to have low HDL (good cholesterol) levels, which puts it at a markedly increased risk for heart disease. HDL is even more important than LDL. Low HDL is three times more common than high LDL in patients with premature heart disease. Thus, there is an urgent need to lower LDL levels and increase HDL levels to protect the heart from diseases, and the best way to do this is through a good diet and active lifestyle. Those with dyslipidemia and increased LDL levels (bad cholesterol) should restrict saturated fat to less than 7% of their total calorie count and cholesterol intake to less than 200 mg/day. They should add more fibre through dietary strategies such as increasing oats or psyllium, as well as fruits and vegetables. This can help decrease bad cholesterol. Indian foods such as rice, puri, naan, white bread and fried items are all high in non-saturated fats and can hike triglyceride levels. Combating obesity Obesity is strongly linked to dyslipidemia and weight management is an essential part of the recovery plan to lower lipid levels. Physical exercise for at least 45 minutes a day, five days a week is a must. For those who are not able to control their cholesterol levels with lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, effective prescription medications are available and should be strictly adhered to. Long taught in biology class as a 50-50 genetic lottery between X and Y chromosomes , the sex of a child may not be entirely random. According to new findings published in Science Advances on July 18, individual families may have skewed odds toward consistently having either boys or girls — and age, genetics, and environmental factors may be by epidemiologist Dr. Jorge Chavarro of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health , the study analyzed data from the historic Nurses' Health Study , one of the largest and longest-running fertility databases in the world. Examining more than 58,000 pregnancies between 1956 and 2015, researchers looked at patterns of sibling sex within families, maternal age, and genetic the broader population showed the expected close-to-even split between male and female births, something surprising appeared at the family level: some couples appeared more likely to have children of the same sex — and not by random one in three families in the study had children all of the same sex — all boys or all girls — a figure notably higher than simple probability theory would predict, especially in families with three or more researchers developed a statistical model suggesting that each couple might have their own "unique probability" of producing a child of one sex or the other. While this individual bias remains balanced out when looking at large populations, it could significantly affect outcomes within families.'It's not that boys or girls are more common overall, but that the odds may not actually be 50-50 for everyone,' said Dr. effect appeared even stronger in women who had their first child later in life. For couples puzzled by having multiple same-sex children — and others praying for variety — the research may provide both insight and assurance. While conception still carries an element of chance, it may not be as random as previously also raises huge questions for future research: Could IVF or fertility treatments one day account for these biological skews? Exercise could ease symptoms for people with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL)

Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) is the most common adult blood cancer in the western world, and it predominantly affects older adults. Most people are diagnosed after the age of 70, but increasing numbers of younger people, some under 60, are also being affected. CLL starts when a type of immune cell called a B cell – normally responsible for producing antibodies – becomes cancerous. This not only stops it from working properly, but also weakens the rest of the immune system. For many people, CLL begins as a slow-moving, low-grade disease that doesn't need immediate treatment. These patients are placed on 'active monitoring,' where they're regularly checked for signs of progression. Others, especially those with more aggressive forms of the disease, will need immediate and targeted treatment to destroy the cancer cells. But regardless of the stage, CLL involves a prolonged and often unpredictable course. It's associated with a higher risk of infections, secondary cancers and a heavy symptom burden that can affect quality of life for years. People on active monitoring often find themselves in a kind of medical limbo: well enough not to need treatment, but not well enough to feel secure. Fatigue, anxiety, social isolation and fear of infection are common. For those receiving treatment, side effects including nausea, bleeding, diarrhoea and extreme tiredness can make everyday life even more challenging. Because CLL weakens the body's ability to fight infection, many people begin avoiding places where germs might spread: busy shops, family gatherings, even the gym. But while this instinct is understandable, it can come at a cost. Over time, isolation and inactivity can chip away at physical fitness, reduce resilience and make it harder to recover from illness or cope with stress. The role of exercise Exercise is good for everyone but for people living with CLL, it can be life-changing. Our research shows that physical activity is strongly linked to fewer symptoms and a better quality of life. Fatigue, the most common and often most debilitating symptom, was significantly lower in people who stayed active. Many also reported reduced pain and a greater sense of physical wellbeing. Cancer-related fatigue isn't just feeling a bit tired. It's a deep, persistent exhaustion that doesn't improve with sleep or rest. The exact biological reasons behind it aren't fully understood, but one thing is clear: regular movement helps. People who are more active tend to feel better – and live better. The good news is that even gentle activity can make a difference. Low-intensity activities are safe for almost everyone and come with meaningful health benefits. Walking, yoga, swimming – anything that gets you moving – can help ease symptoms. In fact, research shows that just 12 weeks of regular exercise can reduce fatigue and improve day-to-day wellbeing. People with additional health concerns, such as heart disease, diabetes or bone conditions, should take extra care. It's always a good idea to speak to a doctor or physiotherapist before starting a new routine. The PAR-Q+ (physical activity readiness questionnaire) is a helpful tool to assess whether it's safe to begin exercising. Once cleared, the goal is to work up to the recommended activity levels: 150–300 minutes of moderate activity a week (like brisk walking or cycling) or 75–150 minutes of vigorous activity (like jogging or swimming), along with two sessions of muscle-strengthening activities per week. Start slowly and build gradually. Because people with CLL are immunocompromised, it's important to reduce infection risks while staying active. That might mean exercising outdoors, avoiding crowds, wearing a mask, or choosing quieter times at the gym. But, as long as precautions are taken, the benefits of movement far outweigh the risks. Benefits of keeping active In one of our pilot studies, people with CLL who had not yet started treatment showed smaller increases in tumour cell counts after 12 weeks of exercise. Their immune systems also appeared more robust, with stronger responses to abnormal cells. This research is still in its early stages, but it's encouraging to see that exercise doesn't appear to accelerate disease progression – and might even help to slow it. The biggest improvements were seen in people who started off with the worst symptoms or poorest physical condition. In other words, those with the most to gain, gained the most. Older adults, in particular, seemed to benefit from even modest activity. People receiving treatment were generally less active and reported lower quality of life than those who weren't but their symptom levels were similar. That suggests physical activity might offer especially meaningful benefits for people going through treatment. Exercise is already a well-established part of care for people with solid tumours such as breast or bowel cancer. What's different about CLL is that many people don't receive treatment for years – yet still experience symptoms and lower quality of life. Our study shows that physical activity matters just as much for this group. Whether someone is on active monitoring or undergoing treatment, staying active can help ease symptoms, boost energy and improve daily life. It's a powerful reminder that even small steps can make a big difference and that living well with CLL isn't just about waiting for treatment. It's about reclaiming strength, mobility and agency, one movement at a time.
