Alert Day Wednesday across Maryland for heavy windswept rain
Today is a good day to get any weather dependent outdoor activities done. Despite the clouds, we are going to stay dry through late afternoon. Clouds will continue to lower and thicken throughout the day. Highs will top out in the lower 70s.
An area of low pressure will approach from the south and west this evening through Wednesday. The first batch of showers are possible as early as 6 pm, especially south and west of Baltimore City. Showers will continue to overspread the area after 6 pm through midnight. Showers will begin to gel into a widespread steady rain before daybreak tomorrow morning. Low temperatures will fall into the mid 50s tonight.
Wednesday is a WJZ First Alert Weather Day for a widespread steady to heavy, windswept rain. The heaviest rain will impact the morning commute through the early afternoon hours. Rain will gradually taper off to showers during the afternoon and evening. A solid one to two inches of rain is expected by the time the heaviest rain ends Wednesday afternoon. The morning commute will be highly impacted the stormy weather, so please make sure you budget yourself extra time and check back in with the WJZ First Alert Weather Team.
A cold front will approach the area Thursday. This will bring another chance of a few showers and thunderstorms. Ahead of the front, Thursday will be warm and muggy with a mostly cloudy sky. Any storm on Thursday has the potential to drop some drenching downpours and gusty winds. Highs will top out in the upper 70s.
Another area of low pressure will be forming on Friday into Saturday and its track may bring us more wet weather. Expect showers or a batch of rain to develop Friday afternoon and evening and continue through early Saturday morning. An additional batch of showers and thunderstorms will be possible Saturday afternoon and evening as the second half of this weather system moves through the area. Saturday will be seasonably mild and very muggy with highs in the middle 70s.
Sunday and Monday look like gorgeous days as we start the new month of June. With a partly to mostly sunny sky Sunday, we'll see highs back into the middle 70s with less humidity. Monday looks stunning with abundant sunshine and highs in the lower 80s.

Maryland heat wave grows worse, strong storms will end it Thursday
Our current heat wave will grow more intense Tuesday. Temperatures and humidity will be higher than on Monday. We'll have another brutal day of heat and humidity Wednesday before the extreme heat departs the area Thursday with heavy thunderstorms. Monday marked day number four of Maryland's current heat wave. High temperatures rose into the middle 90s with abundant sunshine. High temperatures only get hotter Tuesday into Wednesday. Alert Days are in effect Tuesday through Wednesday due to the dangerous combination of heat and humidity. Heat index temperatures will soar well over 100° as early as mid to late morning and the heat index will remain above 100° through at least the dinner hour. Actual temperatures will soar into the mid and upper 90s. Some highly urbanized areas, like Baltimore City, could see high temperatures approach the century mark. The Orioles are playing a doubleheader Tuesday. Both games look extremely hot, but the first game will be the toughest to endure with blazing sunshine and temperatures in the middle to upper 90s. Please wear light weight, light colored clothing along with a hat and sunglasses. Hydrate frequently during the game and take breaks from direct sunshine. First pitch temperature for game 1 will be around 93° with temperatures in the 90s for the entire game. Feels like temperatures will be over 100° for the entire game. The second game at 6:35 p.m. also looks hot and steamy. First pitch temperature is forecast to be 93°. At least for the second game, the sun won't be as much of a factor. Even with a night sky, temperatures stay close to 90° for most of the innings. The good news for both games is that thunderstorms won't be an issue, so no rain delays or postponements will occur. A slow-moving cold front will approach us late Wednesday into Wednesday night. Thunderstorm coverage looks rather isolated Wednesday evening, but the storms that do manage to form could be severe. The main impacts would be drenching downpours, intense lightning, and localized damaging winds. Most neighborhoods across central and eastern Maryland will stay dry Wednesday evening and night. An additional wave of low pressure will develop along the cold front Thursday into Friday. The timing of the cold front is now trending toward the afternoon and evening hours. This would allow for heat and humidity to build Thursday morning and midday ahead of the developing storms. This means the threat for pockets of damaging winds and flash flooding is increasing due to the available heat and humidity for storms to thrive. There could be a few broken lines of strong to severe storms Thursday, especially 3 p.m. through 11 p.m. The WJZ First Alert Weather Team is monitoring Thursday for the potential of a First Alert Weather Day for severe weather and/or heavy rainfall. If new computer model information remains consistent on timing and intensity of Thursday's storms, a First Alert Weather Day will be issued for Thursday soon. This same cold front will continue to inch southward on Friday, so showers linger throughout a good chunk of the day. With the cold front being to our south, major heat relief will be felt with high temperatures only reaching the middle to upper 70s. At this time, the weather this weekend looks simply outstanding! High pressure will be arriving from the northwest. This will help draw down some refreshing air from Canada Friday night through the weekend. In addition to the comfortable temperatures, we'll enjoy dry weather with partly to mostly sunny skies. Afternoon high temperatures Saturday and Sunday will only reach the lower 80s, and overnight lows will be great for open window weather, dipping down into the 50s and 60s. Storms expected to end June, start July in Maryland
Storms are back in the forecast on Monday after weekend storms caused damage for some neighborhoods in Maryland. We started the day quietly, with a few early morning showers before a couple more showers developed after sunrise. The better chance for showers - and a few storms - will be this afternoon into the evening. A level 1 out of 5 risk for severe storms is in place for most of Maryland on Monday. Damaging winds and heavy rain are the greatest concerns for developing storms for both Monday and on Tuesday. Tuesday is a WJZ First Alert Weather Day. The risk for severe storms is higher: level 2 out of 5 risk. As mentioned, strong, damaging winds are the greatest threat when looking at the storm threat. Heavy, potentially flooding rainfall is also a possibility thanks to increased levels of humidity typical in early July. Storms develop in the afternoon and continue into the evening. Your PM commute may be impacted for the second day in a row. Conditions quiet down for the midweek. Sunshine returns to accompany the warm air and humidity as we head into the holiday weekend. Speaking of the holiday weekend: the forecast looks to agree with your outdoor plans! Friday the fourth as well as Saturday and Sunday all look to be more dry than not. High temperatures will be in the 80s to 90s all three days. Don't forget the SPF with mainly sunny skies expected. Remember to also stay hydrated!

Dangerous Maryland heat wave continues through Wednesday
Dangerous levels of heat and humidity will continue across Maryland Tuesday and Wednesday with highs close to 100°. Record highs may be tied or broken across the state through Wednesday. Heat index values will continue to be extreme and overnight lows near 80° will offer no relief. Everyone is advised to take heat precautions seriously, as the temperatures will be dangerous even to healthy individuals. Baltimore has declared a Code Red extreme heat alert through Thursday, June 26. Extreme heat and humidity continue across Maryland The combination of near triple-digit heat and elevated humidity levels has prompted the WJZ First Alert Weather team to issue Alert Days through Wednesday, June 25. High temperatures are forecast to approach, if not reach, the lower 100s again Tuesday. We'll once again be monitoring as that is near-record heat. The record high at BWI-Marshall Tuesday is 100° and our forecast high of 100° would tie that record set back in 2010. Our normal high temperatures for late June are in the upper 80s. The Inner-Harbor set a new record high Tuesday of 104° and that's our forecast high again for Tuesday. Elsewhere across the state, high temperatures are forecast to be between 98° and 101°. The heat index will range from 105° to 110° Tuesday with some isolated locations reaching heat index values of 115°. Not only is this heat sweltering, it's downright dangerous to humans and to pets. Wednesday will also feature dangerous heat, but high temperatures should fall just shy of 100°. BWI's record high is 99° from 1997 and right now our forecast calls for us to tie that record. Regardless of whether we see records fall the next couple of days, prepare for more highly uncomfortable levels of heat and humidity statewide. Isolated strong and drenching thunderstorms are possible Wednesday afternoon and evening, but a much better chance of storms returns Thursday. Feels like temperatures will be between 105° and as high as 115°. Heat alerts in Maryland Heat is the number one weather-related cause of death in the United States. Please take the Alert Days seriously, especially if you will be outdoors now through Wednesday evening. As the extreme heat continues, additional heat alerts will be active across much of Maryland: The Eastern Shore is under an extreme heat warning through Wednesday at 8 p.m. Extreme Heat Warnings continue for central Maryland through 9 p.m. Tuesday.. Feels like temperatures could approach 110° for these areas. An extreme heat watch is in effect for central Maryland at 11 a.m. Wednesday through 9 p.m.. Feels like temperatures could approach 110° for these areas. This extreme heat watch will likely be upgraded to an extreme heat warning sometime today for Wednesday. Regardless of whether or not your neighborhood is under an alert, the entire area will be extremely hot and humid, even overnight. Low temperatures in the 70s and 80s are warm enough, but with high levels of moisture, we'll wake up already feeling like the mid-80s. Beating the heat during this Maryland heat wave Here are a few ways to stay safe and healthy while working outside during extreme heat: Wear loose-fitting, light colored clothing Avoid being in the direct rays of the sun Take frequent breaks if you plan to be outdoors Drink lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Two liters of water a day is recommended Remember pets and the elderly in the heat Make sure ceiling fans are circulating counterclockwise to circulate cooler air downward In preparation for the unusually hot weather, Baltimore City's Health Department is declaring its first 'Code Red Extreme' Heat Alert. The alert begins Sunday and runs through the middle of the week. A list of cooling centers is available HERE. Late week storms then brief relief Friday Thursday should be the last day of this current heat wave. While extreme heat warnings are not likely Thursday, we're still forecasting hot and steamy temperatures. Highs Thursday afternoon will reach the lower 90s with heat index values close to 100°. A cold front will continue to sag south Thursday afternoon sparking off numerous showers and thunderstorms. A few of these storms could be strong to severe with locally damaging winds. The greater risk from these storms may be localized flash flooding given the high humidity values and slow-moving storm motions. Some neighborhoods could receive locally a quick 1 to 3 inches of rain while other neighborhoods will receive far less from these hit or miss storms. Friday will be much cooler as the cold front sinks south of us. High temperatures may not even reach 80°. There is the chance of showers Friday, especially during the morning. Steamy summer weekend across Maryland with more storms The upcoming weekend will turn hotter and more muggy once again as the cold front that brought relief Friday lifts north as a warm front. Expect variable clouds with hot and muggy weather Saturday and Sunday. Widely scattered to scattered thunderstorms will develop during the afternoon and evening hours. These storms will be of the hit or miss variety, so not every neighborhood will get wet. Neighborhoods that do receive storms could receive locally heavy rainfall, cloud to ground lightning, and gusty winds. Highs over the weekend will be steamy. Saturday's highs will climb toward the upper 80s. Sunday's high temperatures will reach 90°, but with high humidity levels, feels like temperatures will top out in the middle to upper 90s.
