5-Hour Wonder: 38 Jawans Build Bridge To Reconnect Marooned Gadchiroli Village
2
Nagpur: Thirty-eight commandos of Gadchiroli police constructed a 70m-long, 14-foot-wide makeshift bridge in just five hours on July 28 in the marooned Maoist-hit region of Linganoor, near Jhinganoor in Gadchiroli.
The hamlet, 65km off Sironcha in south Gadchiroli, is cut off for four months of the monsoon (June to September) due to an overflowing lake in the adjacent forest, leaving 30-odd families in peril.
The bridge designed for pedestrians, two-wheelers, and small four-wheelers, now serves as a lifeline to ensure access to medical emergencies and uninterrupted education for the tribals. The operation coincided with the first day of the Maoists' annual 'Saheed Saptah' (Martyrs' Week), a seven-day period of heightened tension when Maoists commemorate their fallen comrades and target security forces.
Undeterred by the risks, a young brigade led by sub-inspectors Abhijit Ghorpade, Aniket Khopade, and Omkar Hegde cordoned off the area and executed the mission under challenging circumstances.
Their efforts not only addressed a critical community need, but also won hearts of Linganoor's residents, marking a significant step toward peace in a former Maoist stronghold. The initiative was born out of 'grambhet' — a village visit programme where the cops learned of the hamlet's isolation during the monsoon.

The overflowing Linganoor tola nullah prevented students from attending school and led to tragic outcomes in medical emergencies.
"We heard stories of students missing months of school and families unable to access timely medical care," said Ghorpade.
The team's resourcefulness was key to the bridge's swift construction. Spotting abandoned cement pipes at a nearby bridge construction site, the commandos, with the contractor's permission, transported eight pipes over 5km to form the bridge's base.
Cement bags were used for bonding, with gravel and pebbles for fortification, and a tractor flattened the surface.
"Most of us come from agricultural families," Ghorpade explained. "We've built bunds and diverted water before, so we applied that practical knowledge here." The 38-member team, supported by a few villagers, completed the bridge before sundown—a critical deadline given the risks posed by the guerrillas' 'saheed saptah.'
SP Neelotpal highlighted the Gadchiroli Police's broader community outreach efforts, which include building roads and other village utilities.
"This bridge is a testament to our commitment to improving lives in a region long affected by conflict," he said.
The operation's timing added complexity, as Maoists are known to be active during their martyrs' week. Yet, the commandos' vigilance ensured the area was secure, allowing them to work in the overflowing nullah and complete the structure in record time.

Video sparks outrage: Gujarat man pesters feasting lion in show of bravado, arrested; court denies him bail
AHMEDABAD/RAJKOT: In a thoughtless act of perceived daredevilry, a man from a village in Bhavnagar's Talaja got dangerously close to and pestered a lion enjoying its kill in the Shetrunji Wildlife Division, sparking widespread outrage from nature lovers and general public alike. The act was caught on video after which the man, identified as Gautam Shiyal, was tracked down and arrested by forest officials. Charged under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, he was presented before a Talaja court, which denied him bail. The clip, reportedly filmed in the vicinity of Bambhor and Talli villages, shows people gathered to watch the lion, and Shiyal venturing too close and disturbing it. As Shiyal approaches closer, the distracted and now-cautious lion is seen getting up and walking towards him. People are also heard trying to distract the lion and prevent an attack on Shiyal. As Shiyal retreats, the lion pauses a few moments before returning to its kill. As the video went viral, wildlife conservationists condemned the act. The forest department ordered an inquiry with deputy conservator of forests D K Sadhu leading the investigation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brigade Showcase 2025 Limited-time Event from Aug 8–10 at Sheraton Grand, Brigade Gateway Brigade Group Learn More Undo You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad The team traced the location of the incident using human intelligence and soon zeroed in on Shiyal. Assistant conservator of forests Bhagirathsinh Zala said that the accused was presented in the Talaja court, where his bail application was denied, and he was remanded to Bhavnagar district jail. "People must understand that wild animals are not spectacles," a senior forest officer said. "Approaching or disturbing them is not only reckless but also a punishable offence." Meanwhile, another video has gone viral in which a lion is seen emerging from the bushes on the busy Bilkha-Visavadar road. A forest official said, "In Junagadh, it's not uncommon to spot lions in villages near Gir and Girnar forests, but this time, it was an unexpected appearance in broad daylight near Junagadh city itself on the Bilkha-Visavadar road. All vehicles came to a halt." The lion, seemingly unfazed by the commotion, calmly observed the scene. It stood directly in front of an auto-rickshaw, prompting the driver to stop immediately. The passengers inside were seen capturing the extraordinary moment on their phones. Officials said that for a brief period, the lion and the onlookers were locked in a silent standoff. Eventually, a team of foresters arrived and successfully guided the lion back into the forest. The recent lion census revealed that Gujarat has 891 lions, grown by 70% in a decade, up from 523 in 2015. With one nomadic lion recorded in Devbhumi Dwarka, all 11 districts in Saurashtra officially recorded presence of the big cat.

DHS takes ‘father/son bonding to a whole new level' by removing age limits for ICE recruitment
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a major policy shift aimed at expanding its recruitment pool for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). On August 6, 2025, DHS made public that all age limits for new ICE applicants have been eliminated. This change is designed to accelerate the hiring of 10,000 new officers as part of a broader strategy aligned with the forceful immigration enforcement priorities of the Trump administration . The minimum age was 21, with maximum age limits generally set at 37 for criminal investigator roles, and 40 for deportation officers. The decision to remove these limits entirely marks a significant departure from previous standards. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed this during an appearance on Fox & Friends , emphasizing that applicants can be as young as 18. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? Desert Order Undo Secretary Noem highlighted that the policy change does not mean a lack of rigour; applicants must still pass medical exams, drug tests, and physical fitness assessments to qualify. The agency is determined to attract motivated individuals 'of any age' who aspire to contribute to national security and enforcement of immigration laws. Recruitment surge fueled by new incentives The age restriction removal comes amid an aggressive recruitment campaign that launched just over a week before the announcement, on July 29, 2025. Branded as 'America Needs You' one of the posters read 'We're taking father/son bonding to a whole new level.' To attract this volume of applicants, DHS has introduced a suite of financial incentives, including signing bonuses reaching $50,000, student loan forgiveness programs, premium pay for overtime work, and enhanced retirement benefits. Live Events Trump administration priorities ICE is a linchpin agency for enforcing immigration laws, particularly in executing the Trump administration's policies targeting the removal of unauthorized immigrants, including those with criminal records. At present, ICE employs over 20,000 law enforcement and support personnel. The plan to add 10,000 new officers represents one of the most ambitious expansions in recent years, aimed at enhancing the agency's capacity for widespread arrests and deportations. The removal of age restrictions is a practical response to the need for a larger, more diverse, and quickly deployable personnel pool. This change seeks to remove barriers for qualified candidates of varying ages who can pass the rigorous screening and physical demands of ICE positions.
