Akhilesh snubs EC for SIR in Bihar
1 2 Ranchi: Former UP CM and national president of Samajwadi Party (SP), Akhilesh Yadav , on Tuesday hit out at the Election Commission again over the timing of the special intensive revision (SIR), which has led to an impasse both inside Parliament and outside on the streets. On Rahul Gandhi's alleged exposé over the voters' list last week and the EC asking him to submit the claims under an affidavit, Yadav said, "The affidavit which EC is asking Rahul Gandhi today, we (Samajwadi Party) had already done so before the poll panel two years ago on the deletion of voters but till date there has been no action." "BJP is now resorting to vote theft, wants to snatch the right to vote from the people through the EC," he claimed while talking to reporters outside the Ranchi airport before heading to Nemra to pay tributes to JMM founder Shibu Soren, who died on August 4. Several VVIPs and VIPs have been visiting Nemra to pay their tributes to the 'Dishom Guru'. Notably, chief minister Hemant Soren and his entire family are currently camping at their ancestral house in Nemra for the shradha rituals, which will take place on August 16. Yadav, who is also an MP, further said, "BJP's tactics have been to conspire and plot when they don't have answers to credible and basic questions. He saw political ups and downs for jal, jungle, jameen, but he did not get disappointed. He left behind a political lineage to his son Hemant Soren. We need to take it forward." Op Kavach 9.0: Simultaneous Raids At 794 Spots Net 92 Narco Offenders
New Delhi: In a move to curb the menace of narcotics and organised crime in the city, Delhi Police launched Operation Kavach 9.0 on the night of Aug 9-10. The operation, which was conducted across 15 districts, involved simultaneous raids at 794 locations, resulting in the arrest of 92 narco offenders and the seizure of a substantial quantity of drugs and cash. Police seized 307 gram heroin, 33.165kg ganja, 67 gram hybrid ganja, 610 gram charas, 22.25 gram MDMA, 2.26 gram LSD and Rs 12.2 lakh in cash. The operation was planned following police commissioner SBK Singh's instructions for a comprehensive crackdown on drug sales on the streets. To carry out the raids, 360 teams from all police stations, besides the crime branch and the special cell, were constituted. According to special commissioner Devesh Srivastava, police also registered 275 cases under the Delhi Excise Act and arrested 279 people. They also took preventive action, arresting 75 people under Section 126/170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and detaining 12,834 people under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act. "The operation was a significant step in Delhi Police's efforts to combat the drug trade and save the city's youth from the menace of narcotics,"Srivastava said. According to officials, 1,858 people were taken into preventive custody during the raids and the whereabouts of 227 bad characters were checked. Police also prosecuted 2,968 violators under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act pertaining to the sale of these items near educational institutions. "A total of 1,685 vehicles were seized under the Delhi Police Act. The operation demonstrated Delhi Police's commitment to taking stringent action against those involved in the trade and to creating a safer and healthier environment for the city's residents," said joint commissioner (crime) Surendra Kumar. The raids were part of Delhi Police's ongoing efforts to tackle the growing problem of narcotics in the city, police said. The police departments have been working to disrupt the supply chain of drugs and apprehend those involved in the trade. Operation Kavach started in May 2023 to focus on identifying and apprehending such people. During this operation, it was decided to target both street-level peddlers and high-level traffickers/smugglers and have both top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top approaches to effectively counter drug-trafficking by unearthing their linkages. Till July 31, Delhi Police arrested 1,784 narco-offenders in 1,425 cases under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and recovered about 45kg heroin/smack, 3,770kg ganja, 250kg opium, 33kg charas, 19kg poppy heads and 3kg cocaine. 1 2 Nagpur: Thirty-eight commandos of Gadchiroli police constructed a 70m-long, 14-foot-wide makeshift bridge in just five hours on July 28 in the marooned Maoist-hit region of Linganoor, near Jhinganoor in Gadchiroli. The hamlet, 65km off Sironcha in south Gadchiroli, is cut off for four months of the monsoon (June to September) due to an overflowing lake in the adjacent forest, leaving 30-odd families in peril. The bridge designed for pedestrians, two-wheelers, and small four-wheelers, now serves as a lifeline to ensure access to medical emergencies and uninterrupted education for the tribals. The operation coincided with the first day of the Maoists' annual 'Saheed Saptah' (Martyrs' Week), a seven-day period of heightened tension when Maoists commemorate their fallen comrades and target security forces. Undeterred by the risks, a young brigade led by sub-inspectors Abhijit Ghorpade, Aniket Khopade, and Omkar Hegde cordoned off the area and executed the mission under challenging circumstances. Their efforts not only addressed a critical community need, but also won hearts of Linganoor's residents, marking a significant step toward peace in a former Maoist stronghold. Spotting abandoned cement pipes at a nearby bridge construction site, the commandos, with the contractor's permission, transported eight pipes over 5km to form the bridge's base. Cement bags were used for bonding, with gravel and pebbles for fortification, and a tractor flattened the surface. "Most of us come from agricultural families," Ghorpade explained. "We've built bunds and diverted water before, so we applied that practical knowledge here." The 38-member team, supported by a few villagers, completed the bridge before sundown—a critical deadline given the risks posed by the guerrillas' 'saheed saptah.' SP Neelotpal highlighted the Gadchiroli Police's broader community outreach efforts, which include building roads and other village utilities. "This bridge is a testament to our commitment to improving lives in a region long affected by conflict," he said.
