Alleged rape at Saps Academy

The police and prisons civil rights union (Popcru) has voiced its outrage over the alleged sexual assault of a female trainee at the South African Police Service (Saps) training academy in Tshwane.
According to the union, the trainer at the academy was arrested and removed from his post. This followed the disturbing allegation of rape.
The union expressed deep concern in a statement on Thursday, describing this as a 'serious betrayal of trust.'
'Popcru unequivocally condemns any form of Gender-Based Violence and Child Abuse (GBVC), especially when perpetrated by those entrusted with the training and development of future law enforcement officers.'
Calls for immediate action
Speaking at a Cabinet meeting, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni condemned the incident.
The union has called on Saps to conduct a 'full, transparent, and independent investigation' into the matter.
Popcru has urged the divisional commissioner of Saps training to ensure accountability and appropriate action.
'We also want to make it categorically clear that this criminal act, while deeply disturbing, should not paint all Saps trainers with the same brush,' it said.
Furthermore, Popcru emphasised that while this incident is deeply disturbing, it should not tarnish the reputation of all saps trainers.
Popcru urged the public not to let the actions of one individual overshadow the efforts of the entire training institution
'There are countless committed, disciplined trainers across the country who continue to serve with integrity,' Popcru clarified.

Support and reform demands
The union has also called for immediate support for the affected trainee through the Saps Employee Health and Wellness Programme (EHW). This includes access to psychosocial counselling and trauma support.
Popcru further recommended enhanced screening and vetting processes for all personnel at the academy.
The union also urged stronger gender sensitivity and ethics training across Saps training facilities.
Finally, Popcru stressed the need for greater public transparency in the investigation's outcome. This is to restore public and internal confidence in the Saps.
'Popcru remains committed to building a professional, ethical, and accountable policing environment, free from abuse, harassment, and intimidation,' it concluded.

A Limpopo couple has landed in court for faking a kidnapping to extort R5 000 in ransom from the woman's worried husband. The Limpopo police arrested a 34-year-old woman and her 60-year-old boyfriend, who allegedly faked her own abduction to extort ransom from her husband. On 2 May, a concerned husband reported his wife missing after she failed to arrive at her destination in Garawele Village, Mokopane. The husband had dropped his wife off at the Tibane Crossroad hiking spot in Matlala at about 11am, expecting her to travel to visit family. He suspected foul play and immediately reported the matter to police in Matlala. Ledwaba said the husband received a troubling call from his wife's phone while he was giving his statement to the police. 'An unknown male voice demanded R5000 ransom money, while the sound of a woman crying could be heard in the background,' Ledwaba said. 'The caller abruptly ended the call, only to phone again from a different number with further ransom demands.' A thorough police investigation, however, revealed a shocking twist; there had been no kidnapping. Ledwaba said the wife willingly left with her boyfriend, and the two of them planned the whole scam, including the ransom calls to extort money from the unsuspecting husband. The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has issued a stern warning regarding such criminal deception. 'The Saps [South African Police Service] will not tolerate individuals who manipulate family bonds and exploit genuine concern to commit fraud and extortion. This case demonstrates the emotional trauma and resource wastage caused by false reporting and criminal deception,' Hadebe said. Police warn against abusing systems for personal financial gain 'We want to send a clear message that fabricating kidnapping scenarios for financial gain is a serious criminal offence that will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Our officers work tirelessly to investigate genuine missing person cases, and those who abuse this system will face the consequences.' Ledwaba added that the investigating team commended the husband for reporting the matter swiftly, as it enabled the police to uncover the deception before any ransom money was paid. 'The case serves as a reminder to the public to remain vigilant against extortion schemes and to report suspicious demands for money to the nearest police station immediately,' Hadebe said. Four Walter Sisulu University students arrested amid retaliatory protest
Eastern Cape police have confirmed that four students from Walter Sisulu University (WSU) have been arrested after protests relating to the bail granted to Manelisi Mampana. The Mthatha magistrate's court on Tuesday granted Mampana R10,000 bail with strict conditions. He is accused of murder, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition after he allegedly shot WSU student Sisonke Mbolekwa in April during a protest. The police acknowledge the ongoing student protests at WSU's Mthatha campus concerning the court-ordered release of a murder suspect linked to the death of Sisonke Mbolekwa. Police spokesperson Brig Nobuntu Gantana said they condemned the acts of vandalism, arson, road blockades and intimidation by the students. 'We recognise the profound distress this case has caused in the university community. The suspect's release was directed by the court under standard legal procedures. Central police host GBV awareness campaign
The Pretoria Central SAPS and the Department of Labour held an awareness event on May 29 aimed at discussing gender-based violence (GBV) after the release of the fourth quarter crime statistics. Crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2024/25 financial year have indicated decreases in contact crimes for Pretoria Central, though the area remains a crime hotspot due to elevated incidents of serious crimes. In Pretoria Central, GBV-related crimes such as rape decreased by two counts (21 cases reported last year down to 19), and sexual offences decreased by four counts (6 to 2). One contact sexual offence was reported compared to none in the previous two quarters. The Central SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit visited department employees at their offices on Francis Baard Street to talk about GBV and issues of femicide. The station's spokesperson, Constable Thabang Nkhumise, accompanied by social crime prevention officer Warrant Officer Queen Mahlangu, provided the statistics and the implementation of strategies by the SAPS to assist victims when reporting such crimes. Other speakers took to the podium to educate the employees on different kinds of abuse and other related crimes. Attendees could raise their views and also engage in a debate. Pamphlets with information and contact details were handed out to the attendees. Station commander Brigadier Gibin Mashaba expressed his gratefulness to the department for engaging with employees, saying continued dialogues such as these are needed to break the social stigmas against GBV. 'We want to urge more departments within the inner city to partake in addressing social ills and a continuous effort to reach out to their employees. The only way to illuminate GBV is to instil a culture of whistleblowing by the community to protect victims and provide them with shelter and any psychological assistance,' Mashaba said.
