Egypt's committee on African relations discusses boosting ties, new projects

A high-level Egyptian committee tasked with monitoring relations with African nations has held its periodic meeting to discuss ways to enhance bilateral ties and explore new areas for cooperation and investment, the foreign ministry said. The meeting of the Permanent Committee for Monitoring Egyptian-African Relations was held on July 14 at the ministry's headquarters. It was chaired by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, Abou Bakr Hefny Mahmoud, and included representatives from various national ministries and bodies. In a statement, the ministry said the committee holds a series of periodic meetings to strengthen Egypt's relations with African countries, in line with presidential directives to advance these ties to broader horizons. The meeting addressed ways to enhance bilateral relations with a number of African countries, reflecting the political leadership's keenness to deepen Egyptian engagement on the continent for mutual benefit. This includes maximising economic and investment returns for Egypt and supporting African nations in implementing their national development programmes. The committee also reviewed the status of a number of ongoing projects and explored new areas for cooperation. This involves implementing new development projects and boosting cooperation in capacity building, trade, and investment, through a comprehensive approach to public-private partnerships, the statement added.

Iran says no date set for nuclear talks with US, demands ‘seriousness'

Iran has not yet set a time or place for resuming nuclear negotiations with the United States and conditions its return to the table on 'seriousness,' a foreign ministry spokesperson said on Monday. 'So far, no time or place has been set for the resumption of negotiations,' spokesperson Ismail Baghaei said at a weekly press conference, according to Iran's Tasnim news agency. He added that there were no arrangements for a meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US envoy Steve Witkoff. When asked about Tehran's conditions for resuming talks, Baghaei said Iran had entered the negotiations with seriousness, but that Israel 'committed a crime against Iran' before the planned sixth round, a reference to the war Israel launched against Iran on June 13. 'Unless we are assured of the usefulness and effectiveness of diplomacy, we will not enter such a path,' Baghaei said. 'We must stress that the dichotomy of negotiating or not negotiating should not turn into a stigma against diplomacy. Diplomacy is an opportunity, and we are not authorised to deprive our country of its right to achieve its national interests. The diplomatic apparatus, just like the armed forces, must serve Iran's national interests,' he added. Araghchi said on Saturday that Iran was considering the 'time, place, form, and necessary guarantees' to resume negotiations with the United States. TALKS WITH EUROPE Regarding negotiations with the European troika of Germany, France, and Britain, Baghaei said: 'We are in contact with them, and we are committed to dialogue with them.' However, he stated that resuming talks with them was 'still under study, and I cannot specify a precise date at present, but we are holding consultations with these three countries.' Baghaei warned that if the European troika resorted to the 'snapback' mechanism to re-impose sanctions, it would mean 'they no longer see a role for themselves in the diplomatic process and the Iranian nuclear file.' He described the mechanism as having 'no legal basis or logical justification.' He also noted that the assessment of the damage to the Fordow nuclear facility from US strikes on June 23 was still ongoing. NO PROPOSALS FROM RUSSIA OR CHINA On the role of Russia, Baghaei said Tehran was in close contact with both Russia and China as parties to the nuclear deal and had 'strategic relations' with both countries. However, he noted that while Moscow and Beijing have always declared their readiness to help with the nuclear file, 'they have not presented any clear proposal so far.' Baghaei denied reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin had sent a letter to Iran suggesting it abandon uranium enrichment. He said there was no such letter and that Russia 'knows that Iranian decisions on the nuclear file are taken independently, and Russia has always respected this decision.'

Escalation in Gaza as Israeli airstrikes intensify, ceasefire talks stagnate

Israel's war on Gaza entered its 647th day on Monday amid a significant escalation in airstrikes and artillery bombardments. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, the ongoing assault has killed more than 58,386 Palestinians and injured over 139,077 since October 7, 2023. Overnight, Israeli forces struck multiple areas of Khan Younis, including the destruction of tents sheltering displaced persons in the city's western sector and the leveling of homes in the Al-Katiba and Al-Bayouk neighborhoods. The ministry reported 120 deaths and 557 injuries in the past 24 hours alone, including five aid seekers. The total number of aid-seeking victims has now risen to 838 dead and more than 5,575 injured. Meanwhile, Palestinian resistance factions have intensified their attacks on Israeli forces. Hamas's military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, reported targeting an Israeli armored personnel carrier in northern Khan Younis with a guided missile. The Al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, claimed responsibility for destroying a military vehicle, a Merkava 4 tank, and a bulldozer east of Gaza City. They also reported launching an armed ambush on an Israeli engineering unit, resulting in casualties and a helicopter evacuation. Israeli media confirmed the deaths of three soldiers and the critical injury of another in eastern Gaza. There were also reports that Palestinian fighters attempted to capture an Israeli soldier during the clashes. Separately, several soldiers were reportedly killed in an anti-tank missile strike in Jabalia, northern Gaza. Despite the intensifying violence, indirect ceasefire negotiations continue. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff expressed 'optimism' on Sunday about the potential for an agreement, saying he planned to meet with senior Qatari officials to discuss recent developments. Former President Donald Trump also voiced hope that a resolution could be reached within days. However, skepticism remains. Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to discuss a potential prisoner exchange deal with Hamas. Both ministers reportedly demanded a firm commitment from Netanyahu to resume full-scale military operations following the first phase of any deal. Hamas, for its part, accused Netanyahu of deliberately undermining the negotiations, dismissing the notion of an 'absolute victory' as a 'myth used to cover up a devastating political and battlefield defeat.' The group added that its fighters are engaged in a war of attrition, using surprise tactics that have disrupted the Israeli military's operations. Israeli Channel 14 reported that the army's current mission is to 'completely destroy Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza' to eliminate Hamas fighters entrenched in tunnels before any ceasefire agreement is reached. Channel 12 added that Israel is expected to present new withdrawal maps, including plans to maintain control over the strategic Morag corridor. On the humanitarian front, international agencies have warned of a rapidly worsening crisis. UNICEF reported that over 5,800 children were diagnosed with malnutrition in June alone. Meanwhile, the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) noted a sharp rise in malnutrition cases at its Gaza clinics since March, attributing the surge to Israel's tightened blockade.
