Iran says no date set for nuclear talks with US, demands ‘seriousness'

Iran has not yet set a time or place for resuming nuclear negotiations with the United States and conditions its return to the table on 'seriousness,' a foreign ministry spokesperson said on Monday.
'So far, no time or place has been set for the resumption of negotiations,' spokesperson Ismail Baghaei said at a weekly press conference, according to Iran's Tasnim news agency. He added that there were no arrangements for a meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US envoy Steve Witkoff.
When asked about Tehran's conditions for resuming talks, Baghaei said Iran had entered the negotiations with seriousness, but that Israel 'committed a crime against Iran' before the planned sixth round, a reference to the war Israel launched against Iran on June 13.
'Unless we are assured of the usefulness and effectiveness of diplomacy, we will not enter such a path,' Baghaei said.
'We must stress that the dichotomy of negotiating or not negotiating should not turn into a stigma against diplomacy. Diplomacy is an opportunity, and we are not authorised to deprive our country of its right to achieve its national interests. The diplomatic apparatus, just like the armed forces, must serve Iran's national interests,' he added.
Araghchi said on Saturday that Iran was considering the 'time, place, form, and necessary guarantees' to resume negotiations with the United States.
TALKS WITH EUROPE
Regarding negotiations with the European troika of Germany, France, and Britain, Baghaei said: 'We are in contact with them, and we are committed to dialogue with them.' However, he stated that resuming talks with them was 'still under study, and I cannot specify a precise date at present, but we are holding consultations with these three countries.'
Baghaei warned that if the European troika resorted to the 'snapback' mechanism to re-impose sanctions, it would mean 'they no longer see a role for themselves in the diplomatic process and the Iranian nuclear file.' He described the mechanism as having 'no legal basis or logical justification.'
He also noted that the assessment of the damage to the Fordow nuclear facility from US strikes on June 23 was still ongoing.
NO PROPOSALS FROM RUSSIA OR CHINA
On the role of Russia, Baghaei said Tehran was in close contact with both Russia and China as parties to the nuclear deal and had 'strategic relations' with both countries.
However, he noted that while Moscow and Beijing have always declared their readiness to help with the nuclear file, 'they have not presented any clear proposal so far.'
Baghaei denied reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin had sent a letter to Iran suggesting it abandon uranium enrichment. He said there was no such letter and that Russia 'knows that Iranian decisions on the nuclear file are taken independently, and Russia has always respected this decision.'

Russia hands Ukraine bodies of 1,000 soldiers - War in Ukraine

Russia gave Ukraine the bodies of 1,000 soldiers on Thursday as part of an agreement reached at peace talks last month, Moscow's top negotiator said on social media. Two rounds of negotiations in Istanbul between Moscow and Kyiv have failed to result in any progress towards a ceasefire, instead yielding large-scale prisoner exchanges and deals to return the bodies of killed soldiers. "Following the agreements reached in Istanbul, another 1,000 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers were handed over to Ukraine today," Russian negotiator and Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky said on Telegram. Ukraine handed over 19 killed Russian soldiers, he added. He posted photos showing people in white medical suits lifting white body bags from the back of refrigerated trucks. Exchanges of captured soldiers and the repatriation of remains have taken place regularly throughout the conflict in some of the only successful diplomacy between the sides. Despite pressure from US President Donald Trump, Russia has rejected calls for a ceasefire and the two sides appear no closer to agreeing an end to the three-year conflict. At the talks last month, Russia outlined a list of hardline demands, including for Ukraine to cede more territory and to reject all forms of Western military support. Kyiv dismissed them as unacceptable ultimatums and has questioned the point of further negotiations if Moscow is not willing to make concessions. FM holds high-level talks to advance regional de-escalation as per President Sisi's directives

CAIRO, July 16 (MENA) – In line with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's directives to intensify diplomatic efforts toward de-escalating regional tensions, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Badr Abdelatty held a series of high-level talks with key international stakeholders. These included Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, US Presidential Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi. During the discussions, Abdelatty stressed the importance of pursuing peaceful solutions and resuming negotiations concerning the Iranian nuclear issue. He reaffirmed Egypt's steadfast position that military options are not viable, neither for this matter nor for other crises undermining regional stability. The talks also included an exchange of views on mechanisms to de-escalate tensions and establish a comprehensive ceasefire between Iran and Israel. They stressed the need to prevent the resumption of hostilities and reinforce a political, peaceful solution to the conflict. The talks with US Envoy Steve Witkoff addressed the ongoing intensive efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and ensure its sustainability. The discussion focused on advancing the process of releasing a number of hostages and detainees in exchange for halting military operations, and guaranteeing the unimpeded and sufficient delivery of humanitarian aid, in light of the catastrophic humanitarian conditions in the Strip. Abdelatty also reaffirmed Egypt's categorical rejection of any proposals involving the establishment of temporary encampments in southern Gaza or initiatives that could result in demographic changes in the occupied Palestinian territories. He presented Egypt's proposal to host an international conference focused on early recovery and post-conflict reconstruction, to be convened following the establishment of a ceasefire. This initiative is in line with the Arab-Islamic plan aimed at speeding up Gaza's recovery and rebuilding. For his part, US Envoy Steve Witkoff commended Egypt's efforts, under the leadership of President Sisi, to advance regional peace and stability. He underscored Egypt's role as a vital strategic partner of the United States in these efforts. (MENA)

Parish confirms Palace will appeal over Europa League demotion - World

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has confirmed his club will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after being demoted from the Europa League. Palace qualified for the Europa League with a shock FA Cup final win over Manchester City in May. But UEFA, European football's governing body, ruled Palace should drop down to the Conference League over a conflict of interest involving the club's former director John Textor, who also part-owns French side Lyon. Textor stepped away from Palace at the start of July, but the ownership issue relates to the end of last season when the south London team secured a maiden European appearance by winning the first major trophy in their history. UEFA's ruling would mean Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League, take Palace's place in the Europa League, but Parish has signalled his intent to contest the decision. "We are still fighting," Parish told the The Rest is Football podcast. "There's an appeal process, so we go to CAS which is the court for arbitration and, you know, we're very hopeful. We think we've got great legal arguments. "We don't think this is the right decision by any means. We know unequivocally that John didn't have decisive influence over the club. "We know we proved that beyond all reasonable doubt because it's a fact." UEFA rules say that no owner or co-owner can have a controlling interest in more than one club competing in the same European competition during the same season. Palace's position throughout has been that Textor did not have a sufficiently controlling role for the club to fall foul of the regulations. But the deadline for shareholders to divest their interest in a club, or in some other way to alter their ownership structure, in order to comply with the regulations was March 1.
