VitaHealth, Tropicana expand OFFLINE 16 to champion mental wellness in Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: Tropicana Corp Bhd and VitaHealth Malaysia have expanded OFFLINE 16, a wellness movement designed to promote preventive mental well-being through real-world experiences that encourage Malaysians to unplug, reconnect, and build healthier habits.
Ixora Ang, managing director of sales, marketing and business development at Tropicana, said: "Our mission is to create sustainable, liveable townships that truly support the people who call them home. Environmental, social and governance (ESG) isn't just about the environment and governance; it is about the people too. OFFLINE 16 shows how this vision goes beyond buildings; it's about giving everyone a chance to unplug, reconnect, and care for their wellbeing together."
Ang said Tropicana is proud to champion this wellness movement with VitaHealth, Tropicana Foundation and event sponsor TGCR.
Mental health is an increasingly pressing issue in Malaysia, with nearly one million adults – about 4.6 per cent of the population – living with depression, almost double the figure recorded in 2019. According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2023, one in six children also face mental health challenges. The rise in digital dependency is compounding this crisis, as excessive screen time is increasingly linked to anxiety, depression and social isolation.
Despite growing awareness, access to mental health support remains limited. The WHO World Mental Health Surveys indicate that up to 78 per cent of people in upper-middle-income countries still do not receive the mental health care they need.
Dr KS Beh, chief executive officer of VitaHealth (Malaysia & Singapore) and founder of OFFLINE 16, said the idea stemmed from witnessing how screen time was consuming people's lives.
"The idea to go offline came to me when I noticed how screen time was taking over people's lives, leaving them disconnected and mentally drained. That sparked the birth of OFFLINE 16, a movement inviting people to unplug and reconnect meaningfully while building a happier community."
Since its launch in 2024, OFFLINE 16 has steadily gained momentum. The inaugural edition attracted more than 300 participants.
To date, the movement has clocked 30 offline hours across five editions, engaging participants through various themed activities that combine physical, mental and social wellness for this year's OFFLINE 16.
The 2025 rollout began in May with a pickleball challenge in Penang that attracted 200 participants, followed by a matures's retreat at FRIM, Kepong, and a beach cleanup in Sabah, which together engaged another 300 participants.
The main event will take place on August 16 at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort (TGCR) and is expected to be the largest edition yet. Highlights include a pickleball session with VitaHealth ambassadors, Olympian Pearly Tan and Malaysia's top pickleball player Colin Wong, along with interactive games, wellness workshops, live jazz performances, recycling activities, DIY arts and crafts, health screenings, mental wellness games, and a relaxation zone complete with reading nooks and massage chairs.
The final retreat for 2025 will be hosted in October and will focus on providing a restful resort experience, featuring activities that encourage participants to pause and recharge. All participants will receive exclusive wellness packs worth over RM300 and stand a chance to win lucky draw prizes worth up to RM15,000.
OFFLINE 16 is supported by Tropicana Foundation and event sponsor TGCR, with Big Caring Group also lending its support.
Big Caring Group's chief marketing officer, Wong Siew Lai, believes that health should encompass not only medication but also mental, emotional, and social wellbeing.
With over 500 participants already engaged this year, VitaHealth and Tropicana are well on track to meet their target of 1,200.

Redirect taxes for a healthier future

WHEN the government announced the expansion of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) starting July 1, many Malaysians focused on the rising cost of goods. However, less attention has been given to how this policy – and the earlier increase in sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) excise duties – can shape the health of our next generation. While the intention behind these taxes is clear – to discourage SSB consumption and encourage support for local produce – the real question is: Will they make Malaysian children healthier? A system that helps, not hinder Under the new SST regime, key staples like rice and vegetables are exempt but items such as imported fruits and dairy products (excluding milk) are now taxed at 5%. While the sugar tax is a step towards reducing excessive sugar consumption, the price hikes on imported fruits and dairy products may reduce access to healthier food options and limit the diversity of people's diets, particularly for low-income families. Nutrition crisis among children The latest National Health and Morbidity Survey 2024: Nutrition reveals a sobering reality: One in two children aged five to nine do not consume enough diverse food groups. A shocking 97% of adolescents do not consume the recommended two glasses of milk a day. 87% of adolescents do not consume the recommended two servings of fruits a day. 63% of adolescents drink at least one serving of sugary drinks a day. Malaysia faces a complex nutrition crisis – a triple burden of undernutrition, micronutrient deficiency and obesity. One in five children under five is stunted while one in three adolescents is overweight or obese. These are not just health statistics; they reflect real challenges faced by Malaysian families and the long-term economic risks of a poorly nourished generation. Investing in nutrition Fiscal tools like SSB taxes and SST can support healthier diets but only if paired with meaningful public investment. The government should reinvest tax revenues into nutrition-focused programmes, especially in schools. This includes: - Strengthening nutrition promotion efforts and expanding the reach of the healthy school meal programme through subsidies, so that all students can benefit regardless of income. - Providing free local fruits and milk to students nationwide. Norway has successfully boosted student fruit consumption by 25% through free fruits at schools. Malaysia can follow suit, with the added benefit of supporting local agriculture. - Ramping up monitoring and enforcement of existing guidelines on food and beverage sale within and around schools, including canteens, vending machines, cooperatives and street vendors, to create a healthier food environment for students. Rethinking food subsidies Financial assistance programmes, like Sumbangan Asas Rahmah, are well-intentioned but not nutrition-sensitive. Current options often allow the purchase of processed foods that are high in sugar, salt and fat, while fruits and vegetables are out of reach. This is a missed opportunity to promote healthier eating in the very households that need it most. Let us pivot subsidies to favour nutrient-rich options. A study published in The Lancet Planetary Health found that a 20% price-cut on fruits and vegetables resulted in a 17% increase in purchases. This kind of behavioural change can be transformative for Malaysia's fight against non-communicable diseases, conditions that are already costing us RM51.8 billion in lost productivity and RM12.4 billion in healthcare and disability payments in 2021. Call for urgency and coordination Just as we were united during the Covid-19 pandemic, we must now address the silent crisis of poor diets and child malnutrition with the same urgency. According to the World Bank, every US$1 (RM4.20) invested in tackling malnutrition will yield a US$23 return. That is not just a health dividend; it is economic common sense. If we are going to tax unhealthy consumption, we must also make healthy choices more accessible and affordable. This means turning taxes into targeted investments that nourish our children today to build a healthier and more productive Malaysia tomorrow. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said social media influencers, or key opinion leaders, can play a crucial role in shaping public behaviour, and the ministry intends to leverage their influence to spread awareness of healthy lifestyles. 'We want our influencers to uphold the most important agenda, which is to promote healthy eating and lifestyles,' he told reporters yesterday, after moderating a dialogue on the National Health and Morbidity Survey (Nutrition) 2024 findings. The report revealed serious deficiencies in the population's dietary habits. Only 12.8% of adolescents and 17.1% of adults meet the minimum recommended intake of fruits and vegetables, while dairy consumption is extremely low, at just 2.9% among adolescents and a mere 0.7% among adults. At the same time, sugar consumption is excessive, with 63.1% of adolescents and 47.0% of adults exceeding the recommended intake, mainly due to sweetened beverages. Fat consumption also surpasses the advised 30% of daily energy intake across all age groups, and 75.9% of adults consume more salt than recommended. Dzulkefly said the government will begin with policies focused on food literacy and nutrition awareness and ­highlighted the importance of addressing supply-side issues to make healthy food more accessible. 'Ultimately, it's about ensuring that food suppliers, particularly manufacturers, help promote the idea that healthy food does not need to be expensive,' he said. Dzulkefly also revealed that the ministry is considering the introduction of a nutri-grade system, which would classify food items by nutritional value. 'When we introduce nutri-grade, we will know the category of food, from A, the best, to B, and so on, including those that cannot be advertised at all,' he said. He also suggested that products deemed unhealthy could be placed in special sections of supermarkets, similar to how non-halal items are currently separated, to increase consumer awareness.
