'She (Aruna) was a high-ranking Maoist with multiple pending cases and Rs 20 lakh bounty. Her death is a significant blow to the Andhra-Odisha Border (AOB) structure (of the maoists),' Rampachodavaram DSP GS Prasanth told PTI on Thursday.
On Wednesday, three ultras — Venkata Ravi Lakshmi Chaitanya (Aruna), Gajarla Ravi (Uday) and Anju, were killed in an exchange of fire with Andhra Pradesh police at Kintukuru village in Alluri Seetharama Raju district.
Rampachodavaram (Andhra Pradesh), June 19 (PTI) Venkata Ravi Lakshmi Chaitanya, wife of slain Maoist Chalapathi and a key figure in the 2003 attack on Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, was among the three Maoists killed in an exchange of fire with police recently.
According to police, Aruna played a crucial role in the fatal attacks on former TDP MLAs K Sarveswara Rao and S Soma in 2018.
Aruna hails from Karaka Vanipalem village in Visakhapatnam district's Pendurthi mandal.
Her brother Ajath was killed in a previous encounter with police in Chittoor district, said the DSP.
Similarly, Gajarla Ravi (Uday), who had a Rs 25 lakh reward on his head, was identified as an AOB Special Zonal Committee member hailing from Velishala village in Chityala mandal of Bhupalpally district in Telangana.
The third Maoist was Anju, who had a bounty of Rs 1 lakh. Her exact role within the AOB network is under police investigation.
The exchange of fire operation against the Maoists was carried out by the Greyhounds unit of the southern state's police on prior intelligence inputs.
According to Prashant, all three rebels were killed in an early morning operation in Rampachodavaram forest on Wednesday and police believe more cadres may have escaped into the dense jungle.
The security forces confiscated two AK-47 rifles and other Maoist paraphernalia from the spot.
Meanwhile, Search operations have been intensified across agency regions. PTI MS STH ROH

Mumbai court rejects bail plea of businessman accused of cheating and intimidation

Mumbai: A sessions court rejected the bail application of Prabhaadevi-based businessman Sudhanshumohan Dwivedi, who was arrested by the city crime branch in April for allegedly cheating a businessman of Rs 97 crore. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Dwivedi promised the businessman huge profits on the trade of grains and threatened him with weapons when questioned. The judge stated that "the accusations against the accused are prima facie well-founded at this stage of the investigation, more particularly when the accused is in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate." The judge further remarked: "There are prima facie and reasonable grounds to believe that the accused committed the offences alleged." Considering the nature and gravity of charges and severity of the punishment, along with "the character, behaviour, position, and standing of the accused," the court found the prosecution's apprehensions to be reasonable. "Having regard to the nature and gravity of charges and severity of the punishment, the accused is not entitled to bail. Similarly, having regard to the character, behaviour, position, and standing of the accused, the apprehensions of the prosecution are reasonable," the judge said. The accused is facing charges including criminal breach of trust, criminal intimidation, and offences under the Arms Act. Dwivedi contended that the dispute with the complainant, Gurujit Chhabra, was purely civil. He claimed to have already supplied 75 percent of the goods to Chhabra against the amount paid. Dwivedi cited various ailments, including high blood pressure, high diabetes, hypertension, and fluids around his chest, arguing that he required medical attention at a hospital of his choice, which was unavailable in jail. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A significant part of Dwivedi's plea focused on alleged procedural irregularities in his arrest. He claimed he was detained on March 28 but was only produced before the magistrate 48 hours later. Dwivedi also informed the court that the complainant had reached a settlement and agreed to resolve the issues. However, public prosecutor Ashwini Raykar vehemently opposed the bail. The complainant, Chhabra, a native of Indore in Madhya Pradesh, lodged a complaint alleging he met Dwivedi through one Ayush Sood at a 5-star hotel in Bandra. Dwivedi introduced himself as a commodity trader who buys grains directly from farmers and supplies them to various traders, claiming there was a huge profit in this investment. Chhabra said he was lured by Dwivedi's proposal and decided to invest. It was further alleged that in March last year, Chhabra transferred Rs 5 crore as an advance into Dwivedi's bank account and placed an order. Chhabra told police that on Dwivedi's request, he transferred Rs 340 crore into Asha Overseas India's company account and Rs 91.19 crore into Ganesh Enterprises — a total sum of Rs 452 crore. Chhabra alleged that Dwivedi supplied him with grains worth Rs 355 crore only. When there was no positive response, Chhabra went to Dwivedi's flat in Prabhadevi, where some armed goons, at the instance of Dwivedi, threatened to kill him if he raised this issue again.

Stage set for Modi's city roadshow to celebrate BJP govt's year in power

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi reviewed arrangements for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to the city on Friday to mark one year of the BJP govt in the state and 11 years of NDA rule at the Centre. Majhi visited Janata Maidan on Thursday for an on-site inspection, assessed the arrangements, and directed officials to ensure all works are completed on time. The chief minister emphasised the need for flawless execution of work for the high-profile event, a govt official said. At the heart of Modi's visit — the main and concluding event of celebrations marking the BJP govt's one year in Odisha — will be the inauguration of Vision Odisha 2036 and 2047, a comprehensive roadmap that aligns with Modi's vision of 'Purvodaya' — the rise of east India as a catalyst for national growth, state BJP President Manmohan Samal said. "The event is going to be historic with the PM announcing a developmental roadmap for Odisha by its centenary year in 2036," Samal said. The PM will also inaugurate several projects worth Rs 17,000 crore via video link, including rail services and EV buses, and honour beneficiaries of welfare schemes and social sector leaders before addressing the public at 4:30 pm. After flying to Odisha from Siwan in Bihar — where the PM is scheduled to address a rally — Modi and Odisha chief minister will traverse key locations in the city on a grand roadshow through AG Square, Raj Bhavan Square, Kalinga Stadium Square and Jayadev Bhavan Square. There will be cultural programmes and folk dance performances at around 10 locations on his route, besides a tricolour rally that will follow the PM. The state BJP chief said the visit underscores Modi's commitment to Odisha's development, aiming to strengthen infrastructure and attract industrial investments. Preparations are in full swing, with giant hoardings and cutouts of the PM adorning the city from the airport to Janata Maidan. The BJP expects more than one lakh people to turn up at the meeting venue. BJP leaders said the PM's upcoming visit — sixth after the BJP stormed to power in Odisha — is not just a ceremonial occasion but a strategic move to bolster the image of the Majhi govt and reinforce the party's commitment to the state's development. A three-layer security with at least 133 platoons of police will be deployed for the PM's visit, while police have chalked out a detailed plan to divert traffic from the main arterial road on Airport-Raj Bhawan-Jayadev Bhawan-Janata Maidan route.
