Using religion for political gains
This was not always the case. Before the 1980s, the key players in Andhra Pradesh were the Congress and Left parties, and their narratives were largely based on social issues. Though there were underlying currents of caste-based politics, these did not surface often. The narrative of caste-based politics started with the entry of N.T. Rama Rao into politics in 1982. Rao, the founder of the TDP, advocated for Telugu pride, yet his party was often termed a 'Kamma party'.
Ever since the composite State of Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated in 2014, and Telangana was formed, the politics in the residual State of Andhra Pradesh has changed and has assumed religious overtones. While this was noticeable during the previous YSRCP government headed by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, it has become all the more evident during the current NDA regime, which came to power in 2024. Political narratives have been based largely on a number of issues revolving around places of worship and have caused quite a stir in the State.
The most prominent of these is the controversy surrounding the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD). It broke out in September 2024 when Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu alleged that the laddu prasadam was being made with adulterated ghee containing animal fat. He claimed that the contract for the supply of sub-standard ghee had been given to a firm by the earlier YSRCP government.
The accusation caused political and religious outrage across the country. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, who is the JSP chief, claimed that adding adulterated ghee was a concerted move to attack Sanatana Dharma. The parties and allies of the NDA left no stone unturned in attacking Mr. Jagan Reddy and his party. They went to the extent of saying that the practice of hiring staff from other faiths had led to 'sacrilege' of the TTD. A Special Investigation Team was constituted to probe this matter and the issue finally reached the Supreme Court.
When the controversy died down after a couple of months, Mr. Reddy turned the tables on the NDA following a stampede at the Vaikunta Ekadasi festival at the TTD temple in Tirupati. The incident, which took place on January 8, claimed six lives. Mr. Jagan Reddy and his party alleged negligence, and held the NDA responsible for it.
Before this incident too could die down, TTD's former chairman, former MLA Bhumana
Karunakar Reddy, alleged that over 170 cows had died in a month at the devasthanams goshala (cow shed) and said that funds for the goshala were being misused by the present TTD board and officials. This led to tense moments in the temple town. Both the YSRCP and the NDA locked horns over the issue. All the political parties in the State, including the Left parties, took turns to add to the discourse. The issue reached a feverish pitch and dominated the political narrative in the State.
However, this is not the case only with the present NDA regime although it seems more prominent now. The desecration of Lord Rama's idol at the 12th century Ramatheertham yemple in Vizianagaram district in December 2020 gained considerable political traction. The YSRCP was in power then. All the Opposition parties, including the TDP, the JSP, and the BJP, raised their pitch and made this an election issue in the 2024 general elections. In the same year, a century-old wooden chariot of the Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple, located in Sakhinetipalli Mandal in East Godavari district, was set on fire by miscreants. The Opposition parties alleged that people from other faiths had set fire to the chariot. The suspect in the case, who hails from a minority community, was killed in a road accident.
Senior politicians and political analysts say that this appears to be a new trend in the State. With religious issues taking centre stage, core issues are taking a backseat.

Civil service associations deplore Kadapa MLA's behaviour during Independence Day celebrations
KADAPA: A controversy erupted during the 79th Independence Day celebrations held at the Police Parade grounds on Friday, as officials and civil service associations strongly condemned the behaviour of Kadapa TDP MLA Reddappagari Madhavi Reddy towards senior district officials. In a joint statement, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Collectors' Association State president Visweshwara Naidu, and Revenue Services Association district president Chandrasekhar demanded that the District Collector take appropriate action against the MLA for her conduct. According to officials, the Independence Day event was organised smoothly as per protocol with Law and Minority Welfare Minister NMD Farooq attending as the chief guest, alongside the District Collector and Superintendent of Police on the dais. Separate gallery seating was arranged for other public representatives. However, the MLA arrived 90 minutes late to the event without informing officials in advance. Her designated seat in the gallery had briefly been occupied by others, but was vacated, and offered to her.

TDP faults YSRCP leader Jagan for not hoisting tricolour on Independence Day
VIJAYAWADA: The TDP faulted YSRCP president and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy for not hoisting the national flag on the occasion of Independence Day. Taking to X on Friday, TDP senior leader and Sarvepalli MLA Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy sought to know why Jagan despite being the president of a political party, and served as the Chief Minister, failed to recognise the significance of Independence Day. 'Of course you (Jagan) may be disappointed with the results of Pulivendula ZPTC byelections. But how can you forget a national festival? This will be a black mark in your political career,' Somireddy said. Another senior leader Ponnur MLA Dhulipalla Narendra Kumar accused Jagan of insulting the national flag, and remained as a party president and former CM, without hoisting the tricolour on Independence Day. He said that Jagan humiliated freedom fighters by not unfurling the national flag. 'The defeat of the YSRCP in Pulivendula ZPTC byelection may be the reason for Jagan's frustration. However, abstaining from hoisting the national flag reflects his mental condition,' Dhulipalla observed. While rickshaw pullers, auto drivers and other marginal workers showcased their patriotism by unfurling the national flag in every nook and corner, marking Independence Day, it is highly objectionable on the part of Jagan, for not hoisting the national flag, the TDP leader remarked. Speaking to mediapersons at the TDP headquarters, Vizianagaram MP Kalisetti Appalanaidu felt that Jagan revealed his arrogance by not participating in the Independence Day celebrations.

BJP Parliamentary Board to meet today, V-P pick top on agenda
With days to go for nominations for the vice-presidential election to close, the BJP-led NDA has 'more or less zeroed in' on Jagdeep Dhankhar's successor ahead of the party's Parliamentary Board meeting, scheduled for Sunday evening. According to sources, the 11- member Parliamentary Board – the BJP's highest decision-making body – chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will grant approval to the NDA's pick. The vice-presidential polls have been necessitated after Dhankhar, in a 'surprise' move on July 21, tendered his resignation citing health reasons amid the Monsoon Session. An insider said that following the meeting, the BJP's decision is then likely to be conveyed to NDA partners like Nitish Kumar's JD(U), the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) led by N Chandrababu Naidu and others. In line with the alliance's showcase of 'significant unity' in the vice-presidential polls, the NDA last week had authorised Modi and BJP president J P Nadda to take a call on the alliance's pick for the polls. 'During the Parliamentary Board meeting, senior leaders typically discuss the merits of various candidates. It concluded with the PM giving his final nod on the matter. For the vice-presidential polls, the party has screened several contenders, including sitting Governors and Lieutenant Governors as well outgoing Rajya Sabha MPs. However, the alliance is also considering the polls as an opportunity to display its unity,' a source said. 'During the filing of the nomination and on polling day, the NDA will make it a point to publicly project a united and consolidated front,' a senior BJP leader said. Even as the NDA's Parliamentary Party will meet on Tuesday over the issue, a three-day workshop has been organised for MPs to give them procedural training for the September 9 polls. Sources said that the core agenda of the NDA's meeting was to finalise the vice-presidential candidate, discussions on the 70 Rajya Sabha vacancies scheduled to arise in 2026, the ongoing gubernatorial reshuffle, Cabinet rejig and the appointment of the new BJP national president could also be on the table.
