U.S. Action In Iran-Israel Conflict Worsens Situation, Undermines Stability

KUCHING, June 22 (Bernama) -- Interference by major powers such as the United States in the Iran-Israel conflict will only worsen the situation and undermine regional stability as well as the global economy, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. He said the United States' involvement in the conflict could escalate tensions and have a direct impact on key global trade routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. 'Now, with the involvement of external powers, including the United States, the situation will only become more volatile. If the Strait of Hormuz is blocked, it will pose a major problem to the global economy,' he told reporters after a session with the Sarawak Keadilan Leadership Council here.

OCBC Commits RM11 Bln Financing, Another RM3 Bln By End-2025 For JS-SEZ

BUSINESS JOHOR BAHRU, June 22 (Bernama) -- OCBC Group has committed more than RM11 billion into businesses in Johor since early 2024, as part of its commitment to support the development of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). The bank in a statement today said it plans to extend an additional RM3 billion in financing by the end of 2025 to support investments in key sectors such as real estate, oil and gas, manufacturing, and data centres within the JS-SEZ. OCBC chief executive officer (CEO) Helen Wong said the group has a long history in Johor dating more than a century, with OCBC Malaysia's first branch established in Johor in 1917. Today, the group operates eight branches in the state, out of 38 branches across Malaysia, she added. While reiterating the group's long-term support to JS-SEZ, Wong emphasised that OCBC's One Group approach, which brings together the collective strengths of OCBC Bank, Great Eastern Holdings (insurance subsidiary), Bank of Singapore (private banking arm), and leasing and wealth management capabilities, uniquely positions the group to support business growth and cross-border collaboration. The commitment announcement was made during a courtesy visit by Wong along with senior executives of OCBC Group to Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi at his official residence in Saujana here. Welcoming the move, Onn Hafiz described OCBC's commitment as a vote of confidence in Johor's investment climate. 'The Group's commitment of over RM11 billion, with another RM3 billion targeted by year-end, reflects strong private sector support for our economic vision. We look forward to deepening this collaboration,' he said. Meanwhile, OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Bhd CEO Tan Chor Sen said the group had already taken proactive steps to promote the JS-SEZ to global investors, even before the formal agreement was signed in January 2025.

New applications for revised service, sales tax scope open from Aug 1, says MOF

KUALA LUMPUR: The Finance Ministry has announced that new registration applications in relation to the expansion of the service tax scope and the revision of the sales tax rate, effective from July 1, 2025, can be made starting from Aug 1, 2025. For existing registered persons, applications for the addition of new services under the expansion of the service tax scope and tariff codes under the revision of the sales tax rate, which is effective from July 1, 2025, can be submitted beginning June 24, 2025, the ministry said in a post on X on Sunday (June 22). On June 9, the government announced a targeted review of the sales tax rate and an expansion of the service tax scope, both of which will take effect from July 1. The sales tax rate remains unchanged for essential goods, while a five or 10 per cent rate will be imposed on selected items. Meanwhile, the scope of the service tax will be expanded to include six new services: leasing or rental, construction, finance, private healthcare, education, and beauty services. Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican reportedly said that revenue from the Sales and Service Tax (SST) collection is expected to increase by RM5bil in 2025 and by RM10bil in 2026, following the implementation of the SST revised and expanded scope starting next month. - Bernama
