Cowboys to scrimmage under lights

American Press9 hours ago
The Cowboys will be going primetime Saturday night inside Navarre Stadium.
McNeese State will hold its second and final scrimmage of camp starting at 6 p.m. Following, the players and coaches have a Fan Fest on the field, letting their faithful get a close look at this year's Cowboys.
'We are progressing pretty good,' said McNeese head coach Matt Viator. 'The goal tomorrow is to get into a lot of situations. It might be boring to watch, but that's the way it is.
'Most of it will be pre-scripted. We like to make sure we get the number of situations we want to see.'
The Cowboys will work Saturday night as if it is a regular game to get them ready for the season, which opens in two weeks at home against Louisiana Christian. He gave the players Friday afternoon and Saturday morning off.
While Viator says he will likely have a working depth chart after the scrimmage, it will not be set in stone.
'That's always been the intent,' said Viator. 'Not that you are 100 percent settled on all 22, but that you have a pretty good idea who the one and two guys are, so you are not working four or five guys as much.
There will probably not be a final decision on the quarterback position as junior Alex Flores missed his second practice Friday with a hand injury. Flores hit his right throwing hand on a helmet during his follow-through through Tuesday.
X-rays were negative, and he is expected to be back fully at practice on Monday.
'It is swollen up, so it is hard to get a grip on the ball,' said Viator.
The main thing the Cowboys want, especially on offense, is consistency.
'We want to see the plays better executed and crisper,' said Viator.
Jake Strong and Delvin Lippold, both in the QB battle, had solid Friday workouts. Strong especially looked good during the final two-minute drill portion of the practice.
Strong came over from Texas Tech in the offseason, while Lippold is a redshirt freshman who had some solid moments for the Cowboys at the end of last season. Flores spent most of last year as McNeese's No. 3 QB but had a nice game in the season finale against Lamar.
Tight end Logan Mauldin, in his second year with the Cowboys since coming over from Coastal Carolina, said camp this summer has been different.
'The sense of urgency around the team, not only the players, but the coaches, is different,' Mauldin said. 'The sense of urgency to get better every day has led to us getting better every day.'
Mauldin believes that the tight ends will be used more this year, both in the passing and running game. He had 15 catches for 167 yards and a touchdown last season.
'We are getting utilized a lot in this playbook,' said Mauldin. 'We are going to have a lot of big plays this season.'
He has also noticed an increase in physical play during this camp.
'There is a little bit of wear and tear on the body, but it gets you ready for the season,' Mauldin said.
As for the scrimmage, Mauldin wants the Cowboys to show what kind of team they are going to be.
'I want to see us playing fast, come out strong, have fun, and have each other's backs,' he said. 'I want to see how we respond when somebody might mess up and respond the right way.'
After this weekend, the Cowboys will transition from camp mode to preparing for the season as the season opener nears.

Jerry Jones was surprised Netflix omitted the Troy Aikman/Steve Walsh storyline

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has a note or two for Netflix. In an interview with Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal, Jones expressed surprise over the decision of producers of the soon-to-be-released Cowboys documentary to overlook one specific aspect of the formation of the Cowboys team that won three Super Bowls in the 1990s. Jones expected the eight-part series to address the team's decision to use a first-round pick in the 1989 supplemental draft on Miami quarterback Steve Walsh, weeks after investing the first overall pick in the 1989 draft on UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman. The tension sparked by the selection of Walsh was, per Jones, 'the most trying time of all and I was surprised they missed that.' It really was a battle. In September 1990, Walsh was traded to the Saints. He appeared in 80 regular-season games with 38 starts, but he never achieved anything close to the success Aikman enjoyed. Walsh finished with 7,785 passing yards, 40 passing touchdowns, 50 interceptions, and a passer rating of 66.4. For the Cowboys, it ended up being a footnote. But there's an interesting alternate reality in which Walsh had become the starter. Would the Cowboys have won three Super Bowls? Would they have won even one? And what would Aikman have become if he'd been traded to the Saints a year later?

‘I Stir It Up': Jerry Jones Enrages Cowboys Fans With ‘Soap Opera' Comment

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has irked his fan base after admitting his team is a 'soap opera 365 days a year.' Jones made the comment during a red carpet interview before the premiere of Netflix's 'America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys' documentary. 'The Cowboys are a soap opera 365 days a year. When it gets slow, I stir it up,' Jones said. 'And so it's wonderful to have the great athletes, have the great players, but there's something more there. There's sizzle, there's emotion and if you will, there's controversy. That controversy is good stuff in terms of keeping and having people's attention.' The Cowboys owner has certainly stirred things up this training camp, refusing to negotiate with All-Pro defensive end Micah Parsons and his agent as both sides remain dug in on a contract impasse. Parsons revealed he spoke to Jones months ago about an extension and asked him to speak with his agent to get a deal done, while Jones believes he had a handshake agreement with Parsons, despite nothing being put in writing. Parsons has requested a trade. Cowboys fans were quite displeased with Jones' 'soap opera' comments, taking to social media to express their frustration: Beyond the Parsons situation, the Cowboys are entering the season with a new head coach after Mike McCarthy was fired following a 7-10 campaign. Instead of seeking an outside voice for a fresh start, Jones promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who is serving as a head coach for the first time in his career. The move was widely criticized. It's been 30 years since the Cowboys last appeared in and won a Super Bowl. They haven't reached an NFC Championship game in that same span. As long as Jones remains in charge, it appears he will continue prioritizing his 'soap opera' over winning championships. Related Headlines Eagles Daily: A.J. Brown Injury Setback? Cowboys Coach Brian Schottenheimer Had A Lot To Say About George Pickens

Cowboys Coach Brian Schottenheimer Had A Lot To Say About George Pickens originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Brian Schottenheimer was promoted as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys after one season as the offensive coordinator, replacing Mike McCarthy. His first preseason game wasn't pretty, losing to the Los Angeles Rams 31-21. But a majority of the Cowboys' starters, including new wide receiver George Pickens, who was traded to Dallas from the Pittsburgh Steelers over the offseason, did not receive a single snap. Pickens, 24, was known as a locker room problem during his time with the Steelers, arriving late to games and getting into numerous fights. But Schottenheimer has been impressed with the former Georgia Bulldogs star since his arrival in Dallas. 'From the time we got George and we went in my office and spent some time together, shot some free throws, and just talked and got to know each other," Schottenheimer said. "He made it very clear, he was like, 'Coach, I'm thrilled to be here, No. 1. I want to be coached. I want to be great... Lean into me. Be tough on me. Tell me the things I need to do.'" Schottenheimer proceeded to praise Pickens for his work ethic and communication. 'He's been nothing but incredible in terms of the way he's worked with us, the way he has communicated with us," Schottenheimer added. In the 2024 NFL season, his third in the league, Pickens was Pittsburgh's top pass catcher. The No. 52 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft tallied 59 catches for 900 yards and three touchdowns. Not only has Schottenheimer been impressed with Pickens, but Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has as well. "You turn on that guy's tape, he's getting separation," Prescott said in July. "He's got separation even when he's not getting the ball at times. And when he doesn't have separation, he's still making the catches. "It's not going to be hard. For me, it's about getting the ball near that guy, and he will be George Pickens. Go turn on the tape. He's great at doing it." The Cowboys will open the year on September 4, facing the Philadelphia Eagles in the first regular-season game of the story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 12, 2025, where it first appeared.
