Phil Robertson, ‘Duck Dynasty' patriarch, dies at 79
Phil Robertson was one of the stars of 'Duck Dynasty,' an A&E series that stars his family -- Robertson and his wife, Kay; their sons; the sons' wives; an uncle and some grandchildren -- and revolves loosely around their duck hunting gear business.
Robertson was born April 24, 1946, in Vivian, a rural town in the northwestern corner of Louisiana, as one of seven children.

He attended Louisiana Tech University on a football scholarship and after receiving his bachelor's degree in physical education and a master's in education, spent several years teaching in Louisiana schools.

Unsatisfied with the existing duck calls on the market, Robertson set out to craft his own. In 1972, he whittled what would become the signature product of his company, Duck Commander, which he founded the following year.
Robertson was initially opposed to the idea of a television show, his son Willie told The New York Times in 2013. 'He said, 'I'm already as famous as I want to be.'' Willie Robertson said. 'I explained to him: 'Phil, this can expand your platform to talk about the things you like to talk about,'' including his Christian faith.

'Duck Dynasty,' which ran over 11 seasons from 2012 to 2017, once ranked among the most popular shows on cable and had as many as 12 million viewers. It is loosely centered on the Duck Commander business, headed by Willie, Phil Robertson's third son with Kay. It drew fans for its idiosyncratic humor, the characters' offbeat antics and the way the family was able to mine self-deprecating wisdom from the redneck caricature.
The family was also notably one of the first in the reality television industry to openly admit that their show was staged, describing it as 'guided reality' in which producers would often sketch out the parameters of a situation and have the family live it. That helped the show solidify the idea that distinguishing between real and fake isn't really important in reality television.
The show has occasionally courted controversy. In 2013, Robertson was briefly suspended from the show after an interview surfaced in which he had made statements that were widely seen as offensive to gay people. But the network quickly reinstated him under pressure from fans and after the family issued a statement saying in effect that there would be no show without their patriarch.
Last year, Jase Robertson said on the family's podcast, 'Unashamed with the Robertson Family,' that his father had early stage Alzheimer's. 'Phil's not doing well,' Jase said, adding that Robertson also had a 'blood disease causing all kinds of problems.'
Robertson's survivors include his wife; his sons Alan, Jase, Jep and Willie; and several grandchildren.

"Maybe it's because she grew up in Newark during the Depression era, in poverty, and jewelry represented what she aspired to have in life." While she acknowledges her fascination with jewelry "might sound obnoxious" to some people, the Blue Lagoon actress noted that she views her jewelry collection as more of a physical reflection of her personal evolution. "I'm very attached to jewelry and diamonds," she added. "When you've worked hard, you're not waiting to be validated—you do something for yourself. There's a sense of empowerment in that." ‘Duck Dynasty' star Miss Kay's health declines following husband Phil Robertson's death
Miss Kay Robertson, the beloved matriarch of the 'Duck Dynasty' clan, is facing a difficult chapter marked by grief and declining health. 'Kay is not in the best of health,' her son Willie told USA TODAY Network. 'We're trying to help her out as much as we can.' The 77-year-old was noticeably absent from the 'Duck Dynasty: The Revival' premiere party on June 1, hosted in Monroe, Louisiana. The news of Robertson's declining health comes after she endured the tragic loss of her husband. Phil Robertson died on May 25 after suffering from Alzheimer's. He was 79. 'Some of it is, she is just depressed,' Willie remarked. 'She lost her partner of 60 years.' Her son continued to share that Kay made appearances in early episodes of the 'Duck Dynasty' reboot. However, her declining health prevented her from filming and being featured in later episodes. Kay's health issues first came to light in April, when her son Jase Robertson shared on the podcast 'Unashamed with the Robertson Family' that she had suffered a fall and developed an infection that required hospitalization. Jase said, 'We were kind of dealing with the fact that maybe this is it.' I don't have enough words to tell of all of it, perhaps it will take months or years of remembering,' he wrote in part on Instagram. 'Most importantly, he taught me the value of sharing my faith with others. He was the Real Deal, the same on Sundays as Fridays. Most of our conversations were not about hunting or business, but about sharing the Gospel.' 3 The reality television star did not attend the 'Duck Dynasty: The Revival' premiere party on June 1. Art Streiber Phil, famous for launching the Duck Commander hunting company that became the focus of his A&E show, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in December 2024. His son concluded his heartfelt tribute and wrote, 'Phil, I love you and already miss you. We may be wrong about all this….but I doubt it! Sleep well Dad, can't wait to see you.' A&E announced earlier this year that the hit show would be revived eight years after it aired its final episode. 'Duck Dynasty: The Revival' focuses on Willie; his wife; their adult children, John Luke, Sadie, Will, Bella and Rebecca; and their grandchildren, according to a synopsis. The original 'Duck Dynasty' aired for 11 seasons from 2012-17. Per A&E, the show peaked at 11.8 million viewers.
