Delhi weather update: Delhi on Monday witnessed a marginal relief from scorching summer conditions as temperature dipped below normal levels, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD reported a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung, which is 3.8 degrees Celsius below normal, while the minimum temperature soared to 29 degrees Celsius, 1.5 degrees Celsius above average for this time of year.
Despite high humidity peaking at 77 per cent, the rainfall was largely absent across the city, with only traces recorded at select stations such as Lodhi Road and Safdarjung.
According to the IMD's latest forecast, Delhi is expected to experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph, temporarily peaking at 60 kmph, particularly during the evening and night hours.
The weather office has ruled out heat wave conditions for the next week. The regional forecast indicates partly to generally cloudy skies over the coming days with similar weather patterns persisting across the NCR, including Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad.
The maximum temperatures are predicted to remain between 33 degrees Celsius to 39 degrees Celsius till June 22, suggesting continued respite from intense summer heat.
According to the IMD, favourable conditions are also developing for further advance of the Southwest Monsoon over parts of north India in the next two to three days. This could potentially bring more widespread rain.
Meanwhile, Delhi's 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded in the 'moderate' category at 111, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.

Noida: Overcast skies and a drop in temperature across most parts of NCR brought much-needed relief on Monday after last week's sweltering heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast spatially well-distributed rainfall and thunderstorms across the region on June 20, said an official. According to the IMD's Lucknow centre, western UP —including Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad— is likely to witness scattered rain and thundershowers throughout the week. On Monday, an orange alert was issued for several parts of western UP with the possibility of heavy rainfall, though Noida only recorded a drizzle and Ghaziabad saw overcast skies without any rain. Greater Noida West experienced windy conditions, while persistent cloud cover kept the sun at bay across Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad. Cloud-induced dip in temperatures brought some comfort despite lingering humidity. Richa Mallick, a resident of Greater Noida, said she was hoping for a spell of rain but was still satisfied with the overcast sky. Despite a significant reduction in the maximum temperature, elevated humidity levels continued to cause outdoor discomfort, with the heat index reaching 42 degrees Celsius. The IMD announced on Monday that monsoon conditions were favourable for advancement, entering an "active" phase. The monsoon is expected to cover the areas up to east Uttar Pradesh in two to three days. While Delhi typically receives the monsoon by June 27, this year's progress is slightly ahead of the schedule. IMD has, however, not specified the exact arrival date. Delhi experienced scattered light rainfall on Monday, with cloudy conditions leading to lower temperatures. The maximum temperature was 35 degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal. Monsoon to advance further, predicts IMD
Conditions are favourable for further advance of the southwest monsoon over parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh,Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha; some parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and even some parts of Bihar and east Uttar Pradesh during next two to three days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. Monsoon is likely to be in an active phase with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rain (>20 cm) at isolated places over south peninsular India, Konkan and Goa till June 16. Over the weekend, monsoon has advanced into remaining parts of central Arabian Sea; some parts of north Arabian Sea, Gujarat, remaining parts of Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, Telangana; some parts of Madhya Pradesh; some more parts of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. The Northern Limit of Monsoon passes through Veraval, Bhavnagar, Vadodara, Khargone, Amravati, Durg, Bargarh, Chandbali, Sandhead Island and Balurghat. HT reported on Saturday that after a hiatus of a fortnight, conditions have become favourable for further advancement of the southwest monsoon. Monsoon delivers nearly 70% of India's annual rainfall and remains vital for the economy. About 51% of India's farmed area, accounting for 40% of agricultural production, is rain-fed, with 47% of the population dependent on agriculture for livelihood. Consistent and moderate amounts of rain – as opposed to heavy or very heavy rainfall days – is thus crucial for the country's agriculture and rural sector. Such balanced rainfall helps control prices of staples such as sugar, pulses, rice, and vegetables, potentially easing inflation concerns.

Monsoon likely to keep date with UP
Lucknow: While heat wave conditions abated across the state on Monday, if all goes well, southwest monsoon will keep its date with UP this year. Conditions are favourable for entry of the monsoon into east UP in next 2-3 days, said Met officials on Monday. Till 2019, normal monsoon arrival date in UP was June 15, but it was revised to June 18 in 2020 based on studies of 59 years data (1961-2019). The new normal monsoon arrival dates are: Kerala on June 1, UP on June 18 and Lucknow on June 23. Overcast and cloudy skies with rainfall at isolated places led to a drop in maximum temperatures by 3-10 degrees Celsius across the state. Orai was the hottest with 42.8 degrees Celsius. In the rest of the state, maximum temperatures dropped below 40 degrees Celsius. Similar conditions will prevail for the next few days. "There is a western disturbance over Pakistan and a cyclonic circulation over Punjab. Another cyclonic circulation is hovering over Bay Bengal. Further, there has been interaction between moisture laden easterlies and dry westerlies. On Tuesday, the sky will be partly cloudy becoming generally cloudy sky towards evening and night with possibility of light rainfall. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 35 and 27 degree Celsius, respectively.
