TN: Chennai Police recovers Rs 10.25 cr for cyber fraud
Chennai: In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, the Greater Chennai Police (GCP) have successfully restituted Rs 10.25 crore to victims of cyber fraud in the first five months of 2025.
Of this, over Rs 2 crore was returned in May alone, reflecting the department's intensified efforts to combat the surge in online financial crimes.
In addition to these recoveries, the GCP cybercrime wing has approached courts and frozen Rs 36.27 crore in various bank accounts linked to cybercriminals.
Officials say these swift actions aim to disrupt the financial channels of fraudsters and deter future crimes.
According to data provided by the Chennai Police, the city police headquarters' cyber crime wing led the restitution efforts, recovering Rs 7.08 crore in 582 cases.
The South Zone cybercrime unit followed with Rs 1.66 crore in 234 cases. The North Zone recovered Rs 56.74 lakh from 73 cases, the West Zone retrieved Rs 60.52 lakh in 234 cases, and the East Zone recovered Rs 33.38 lakh in 183 cases.
In the month of May alone, the headquarters' cyber team managed to recover Rs 1.57 crore from 26 cyber fraud cases. Police have raised serious concerns over the rising trend of 'digital arrest' scams, where fraudsters impersonate officials from agencies like the CBI, RAW, and Mumbai Police to instil panic and manipulate victims into transferring money.
Victims are often told they are under investigation or that their accounts are being misused, prompting them to comply out of fear. Other common scams flagged by the police include online part-time job frauds—where victims are initially asked to perform simple tasks like writing reviews or liking posts and are later lured into transferring large sums—and fake online trading platforms promising high returns.
GCP Commissioner A. Arun has issued a strong advisory urging the public to remain vigilant and avoid transferring money to unknown bank accounts.
He emphasised the importance of immediate action in such cases and encouraged victims to report incidents promptly by calling the cybercrime helpline 1930 or visiting the national cybercrime portal at www.cybercrime.gov.in.

"People know him as a kind boy," his mother says. "Once, he gave away his slippers to a barefoot vegetable vendor. Now, none of the neighbours talk to us. Meghalaya honeymoon murder: Accused Raj Kushwaha confesses to crime, says Sonam Raghuwanshi stood there and watched him being killed
In a shocking development, the Indore Crime Branch has said that four men accused of murdering local businessman Raja Raghuvanshi have admitted to the crime. According to ACP Poonam Chand Yadav, the men confessed during questioning and revealed chilling details about the incident. Speaking to India Today TV , ACP Yadav shared that Raja's wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, was reportedly present at the time of the murder and didn't intervene. 'She stood there and watched everything,' he said. The crime took place in a remote area where Raja was attacked by the group. Vishal Thakur, also known as Vicky, was the first to strike, as per the confession. The group then dumped Raja's body into a deep gorge. 'All four accused have confessed to killing Raja Raghuvanshi,' Yadav said. 'The first blow was struck by Vishal alias Vicky Thakur.' After the murder, three of the accused, named Vishal, Akash, and Anand, fled Indore by train. They kept switching trains to avoid getting caught and eventually made their way to Meghalaya. They first stopped in Guwahati before heading to Shillong. Meanwhile, Raj Kushwaha, who is believed to be in a relationship with Sonam, stayed in Indore. Police allege that he helped fund the escape by giving each of the three men around Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 50,000 for travel expenses. The accused told investigators that Sonam was present at the murder scene. However, what's still uncertain is where she went afterward. ACP Yadav said it's not yet clear whether she returned to Indore or stayed back in Meghalaya. That part of the investigation is ongoing with help from local police there. About the murder Raja Raghuvanshi, a businessman from Indore, had married Sonam on May 10. Barely a few days into their married life, the couple travelled to Shillong for their honeymoon. On May 21, they rented a scooter to explore the popular Sohra region, but they went missing the very next day. Tragedy struck on June 2 when Raja's body was discovered in a deep gorge near Cherrapunji. It was badly decomposed and had multiple stab wounds, including two fatal blows to the head. The investigation took a shocking turn on June 9 when Sonam suddenly surrendered at a roadside eatery (dhaba) in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district. Since then, questions have swirled around her role in the crime. While her father insists she is being framed and claims the police are 'making up stories,' the accused in the case have reportedly confessed to her being present at the scene when Raja was killed. According to the police, Sonam was frequently in touch with Raj Kushwaha, who is believed to be her lover and co-conspirator. Despite these claims, the families of the accused, especially Raj Kushwaha's, have stood by them. Raj's mother broke down in front of the media, saying, 'My son is innocent. He always helped people. He didn't even know Sonam.' His sister also insisted he was working at the time and could not have been involved. Sonam's father has gone a step further, accusing the Meghalaya Police of twisting facts and demanded that the case be handed over to the CBI for a fair investigation. Sonam offered Rs. 20L for murder, helped push body into gorge: Sources
Lucknow: A day after the murder of Indore tourist Raja Raghuvanshi took a dramatic turn with the arrest of his wife Sonam Raghwanshi and the exposure of a murder-for-hire plot, it has come to the fore that Sonam offered Rs 4 lakh for her husband's murder and then raised the amount to Rs 20 lakh. According to reports, the hitmen hired by Sonam first met with the Raghuvanshi couple in Bengaluru, from where they took their connecting flight to the northeast. Shillong police sources suggested that the plan of a one-way ticket to Meghalaya was Sonam's plan. Even though her boyfriend did not travel to Meghalaya, he did the planning behind the scenes and was in touch with Sonam, the reports added. According to top police sources, Sonam had also helped the other accused in pushing Raghuvanshi's body into a gorge in Meghalaya. Raja Raghuvanshi's body was found in a gorge near a waterfall in Sohra area (also known as Cherrapunji) of East Khasi Hills district on June 2, days after he reached Meghalaya with his wife Sonam for their honeymoon. Sonam had allegedly hired killers to get rid of her husband as she reportedly wanted to be with her lover. As per sources, Sonam Raghuvanshi planned the murder with her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha just a few days after her May 11 wedding in Indore. The accused first followed the newlyweds to Guwahati on May 21 where they stayed close to their hotel and then to Shillong on May 22. They killed Raja the next day, the sources said. On May 23, Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi went on a trek to a steep peak to see a waterfall, with the hitmen following their trail. At one point, Sonam pretended to be tired and started walking much behind her husband and the killers, the sources said. When they reached a deserted place, Sonam allegedly asked the men to kill her husband. The killers, however, refused to kill him, saying they were tired, as per the sources. Sonam Raghuvanshi then allegedly raised her offer to 20 lakh, they said. According to sources, Sonam also helped the accused in throwing Raja's body into the ditch. As per the preliminary autopsy report, Raja Raghuvanshi was hit twice, once each on the back and front of his head. The Meghalaya Police knew on June 3, a day after they found the body of Raja Raghuvanshi in the gorge, that his wife was involved in the murder. The Meghalaya Police has claimed that all those involved in the conspiracy to kill the man from Indore - including Raj Kushwaha, Vishal Chauhan and Akash Rajput and Anand Kurmi - have been arrested in the operation that they codenamed 'Operation Honeymoon'.
