Disappointed Fans Inspired Ubisoft To Create A Canon Mode For Assassin's Creed Shadows
After a few delays and leaks, Ubisoft's next main entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise, Assassin's Creed Shadows, is nearly here. And, in a series first, it comes with a mode that removes many choices, instead adhering to one 'canonical' narrative path. Now Ubisoft has explained why this option was added and also clarified that you'll still be free to kiss whoever you want even if you pick the Canon Mode.
Assassin's Creed Shadows, set in feudal Japan and starring two very different protagonists, launches later this month. When fans boot it up, they'll have an ironic choice to make: During your playthrough, do you want to make choices or not? You can play Shadows like most RPGs, choosing what to say to certain people to affect the outcome of a questline or story arc. Or you can choose Canon Mode, which removes such choices and tells a set story created by Ubisoft. But why is this previously confirmed Canon Mode even in the game? Well, Ubisoft says it's because of fan 'disappointment' over the way all the dialogue options in games like Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Valhalla prevented the creation of a single 'canonical' record of how those stories played out.
In a recent interview with Gamerant, creative director Jonathan Dumont talked about the Canon Mode in Shadows. According to him, while many fans have loved the RPG choices in recent AC games, others missed the fact that there was no longer a single, agreed-upon metanarrative.
'When we introduced a choice of characters and dialogue choices in AC Odyssey, many of our fans loved the idea, but some expressed their disappointment in not having a definitive and canon narrative for the game that could be embedded in the AC lore meta story, ' said Dumont.
'After speaking with our fans during development, we decided to add a mode that takes out all the choices for Shadows and that can serve as a reference story within the franchise. This way players can enjoy the more RPG style of narrative or a more linear one, if they prefer.'
It's yet another example of how Ubisoft is extremely focused on ensuring that both old school Assassin's Creed fans—who prefer linearity and stealth—and newer fans—who prefer RPG-flavored open-world action—are happy when they play Shadows.
For those who crave a more traditional Assassin's Creed experience, you can turn on instant assassinations, play almost entirely as classic assassin Naoe, and turn off all dialogue choices, too. On the flip side, you can play the game like Valhalla and mostly fight your way through crowds of enemies with big swords while making hard decisions. As I experienced in my preview with the game earlier this year, Shadows truly feels like an Assassin's Creed designed from the ground up to make all fans happy.
However, regardless of whether you play in canon mode or not, Ubisoft will let you romance and kiss any romanceable character you desire. This was confirmed by associate narrative director Brooke Davies while speaking to Gamerant.
'Because Naoe and Yasuke are different people, they each have unique romance possibilities and connections,' said Davies. 'None of our love stories is canon, so players can choose for themselves who—or who not—to pursue.'
Assassin's Creed Shadows launches on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on March 20.

There's still a lot to be added and polished, but 33 Immortals is shaping up to be another potential co-op darling.

The Scott Pilgrim Game Is Getting A Spiritual Successor Over 15 Years Later And It Looks Awesome
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game was a 2010 downloadable movie tie-in that turned out to be an incredible beat 'em up, helping to lead an arcade gaming revival on console. Scott Pilgrim Ex is a spiritual successor to that project that's getting the band back together for another River City Ransom-esque smash-fest down memory lane when it comes to PC and consoles in 2026. The pitch is simple: run around the streets of Toronto as Scott, Ramona, and company beating up bad guys, completing quests, getting stronger, and trying to pick up every nearby object to see if it can be used as a lethal weapon against three rival factions consisting of Vegans, Robots, and Demons. There's up to four-player co-op online, and it sounds like a somewhat nonlinear story will allow players to explore a segmented map consisting of various streets, stores, and alleyways with a high degree of non-linear freedom. There will be seven playable characters, each with their full move lists unlocked from the start of the game, with an emphasis on combos and chucking everything from turnips to other enemies. The debut trailer at Summer Game Fest Live showed off a colorful urban playground full of slick combat animations. The backgrounds aren't bursting with quite the same level of detail and depth as those in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, though that may come closer to launch. You can judge for yourself: The original game was an incredible mashup of old-school inspirations, from exuberant pixel art to chip tune rock medleys, that paid tribute to a series of graphic novels about post-school slackers navigating social drama and paranormal supervillains using video game logic. It was also made by Ubisoft and remained trapped on old consoles until 2021 when the French publisher and Universal managed to untangle the licensing rights and port it to modern platforms. Some of the people who made the original Scott Pilgrim game, including its game play designer Jonathan Lavigne, left Ubisoft to found the indie retro powerhouse Tribute Games, best known for Mercenary Kings and, more recently, making Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge with Dotemu. In addition to Scott Pilgrim EX, it's also working on the Marvel arcade brawler Cosmic Invasion, coming out later this year. 'Scott Pilgrim EX is the culmination of years of experience working on brawlers combined with our intimate knowledge of Scott Pilgrim,' Lavigne said in a press release. 'It's a full-circle moment for us. The original founders of Tribute Games all worked on the first video game incarnation of Scott Pilgrim before launching the studio in 2011. Coming back to this world feels like the most natural thing ever. This game is about friendship, our love of video games, music, and hitting robots in the face with a volleyball. It's full of lore, references, easter eggs and passion. It's the Scott Pilgrim game fans have been waiting for.' In addition to retaining some of the talent from the first game, Tribute is reuniting with renowned pixel artist Paul Robertson and the 8-bit band Anamanaguchi. Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley will consult on a new original story in that universe along with Scott Pilgrim Takes Off showruner Ben David Grabinski (the Netflix series sadly didn't get renewed for a second season).
