Flight operations disrupted in Mangaluru airport after airspace closure
This was due to the sudden closure of airspace over the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar, following missile launches from Iran targeting US bases in Qatar and Iraq.
The unexpected airspace closure late Monday night caused widespread disruption to commercial air traffic.
IndiGo
flight 6E 1438, which departed for Abu Dhabi with 172 passengers and five crew members at approximately 9.40pm, was rerouted to Mumbai. The flight returned to MIA around 2.40am, where passengers were provided with light snacks and informed of a full refund.
Both the arrival of IndiGo from Abu Dhabi and the subsequent flight to Dubai were cancelled. Services resumed post-noon on Tuesday. A senior official from IndiGo said, "The Abu Dhabi-bound flight received communication about the airspace closure while it was mid-air and was diverted to Mumbai.
We have decided to give a full refund to passengers."
Similarly, Air India Express flight IX 885 to Dammam was diverted to Muscat, departing at 6.49pm and landing at 10.29pm in Muscat.

Hyderabad gears up for Swadeshi, eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi with 1.4 lakh pandals
Hyderabad: The city is gearing up for a grand Ganesh Chaturthi, with over 1.4 lakh pandals set to come up this year. The Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi, now in its 46th year, has announced 'swadeshi' as the central theme of the celebrations. "Nearly Rs 1 lakh crore is spent annually on Ganesh Utsavs across the country. All the puja-related products should come from Goshalas and local manufacturers instead of imports," said R Shashidhar, general secretary of the Samithi and Vishwa Hindu Parishad national spokesperson. "Festivals like this must promote swadeshi and the spirit of Make in India." Along with swadeshi, the Samithi has added a patriotic dimension by dedicating this year's festivities to the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The celebrations will also highlight 'desh bhakti' and 'daiva bhakti', with a special focus on Operation Sindoor. The Khairatabad Ganesh, as always, will be immersed earlier in the day, by noon at NTR Ghat. This year's Khairatabad Ganesh Utsav Samithi, in its 71st year, will feature a 69-foot clay idol named Viswa Shanti Mahashakthi Ganesha. Flanked by Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari Devi, Gaja Lakshmi, and Puri Jagannadh, the idol is being crafted over 90 days by 220 artisans, including 80 clay workers and 40 welders. Convenor Sandeep Raj said the organisers are committed to balancing grandeur with eco-friendly practices. "Earlier we used Plaster of Paris for the finish, but this year we switched to clay sourced from Gujarat. Nearly 1,000 bags of clay weighing 35 kg each have been brought in, along with 20 tonnes of iron for scaffolding and natural materials like paddy husk powder and water colours." Started in 1954, the Khairatabad Utsav has grown into one of Hyderabad's most iconic celebrations, drawing lakhs of devotees each year. Stree Shakthi' scheme sees subdued response
Visakhapatnam: Although the free bus travel (Stree Shakthi) scheme launched on Friday has sparked enthusiasm among women, buses were less crowded than expected on Saturday. When TOI visited the RTC complexes at Dwaraka Nagar and Maddilapalem in Visakhapatnam, there was about a 20% increase in female passengers compared to a typical day. However, the turnout fell short of the high demand anticipated for a free service. Officials said that the subdued response might be due to the three-day holiday period, which included Independence Day, Krishn Ashtami and Sunday. RTC authorities anticipate that there will be a surge starting from Monday, Aug 18. For instance, the Parvathipuram-Visakhapatnam bus, which earned about Rs 9,000 in ticket fares on Satuday, reported about Rs 3,400 worth of free tickets issued to women passengers on Saturday. Since zero-fare tickets are recorded for govt reimbursement, this indicates that women availing the free service made up about 40% of the bus occupancy. Similarly, a bus traveling to Narsipatnam, roughly 75 kilometers away, still had some vacant seats. Speaking to ToI, A Ramannamma, a private employee who previously used a monthly bus pass costing Rs 460 for travel between Bullayya College and Arilova in Visakhapatnam, said the free bus travel scheme would eliminate her need for a monthly pass. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Writing in English Doesn't Have to Feel Hard Grammarly Learn More Undo "If someone like me can save Rs 500 a month on city travel, long-distance commuters stand to save Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 monthly," she said. R Janaki, a woman passenger heading to Srikakulam from Dwaraka bus station, said that she will save Rs 125 each way on journey. "It's a great initiative that empowers women, allowing us to travel anywhere in the state free of charge," said Janaki. However, limited bus service availability beyond the districts remains a challenge for long-distance women travellers wishing to use the scheme. While several buses from Visakhapatnam to destinations in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, such as Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Narsipatnam, are included in the free travel category, options to travel to nearby cities like Kakinada and Rajahmundry, about 200 kilometers from Visakhapatnam, are limited. This is mainly because RTC operates mostly ultra-deluxe, AC, Indra, and non-stop services on these routes, which are currently excluded from the scheme. Furthermore, some women faced difficulties accessing the free service due to the lack of required identity cards. While some conductors allowed travel with photocopies or showing Aadhaar cards on mobile phones, others insisted passengers purchase tickets instead of traveling for free. TN tourism clocks 5x rise in revenue
Chennai: From its 1,076-km coastline and misty hill stations like Ooty and Yercaud to heritage landmarks such as the Thanjavur Big Temple, Mamallapuram Shore Temple and the Keeladi Museum, Tamil Nadu has been showcasing its tourism wealth with remarkable results. The sector clocked a five-fold revenue jump as TTDC's earnings rose from 49.11 crore in 2020–21 to 243.31 crore in 2023–24, powered by a surge in both domestic and foreign arrivals. According to official data, foreign tourist arrivals in Tamil Nadu rose more than eight-fold from 0.14 million in 2022 to 1.17 million in 2023, while domestic numbers climbed from 218.58 million to 286 million during the same period. New attractions such as the Keeladi Museum, a glass sea bridge at Kanyakumari, and world-class libraries, along with upgrades at Hogenakkal, Courtallam, Yercaud, Pichavaram and Dhanushkodi, have added to this surge," said tourism minister R Rajendran. The state's push has earned global recognition with awards from the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association, Outlook Traveller and UNESCO, while Keeladi and Melkalingampatti were named India's Best Tourism Villages in 2024. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors are going crazy for these comfy, stylish, easy-on shoes Ultra-Comfortable Shoes Undo The Tamil Nadu Tourism Policy 2023 and the successful hosting of the Medical Tourism Conference 2025 in Chennai have also provided fresh momentum. "Sports events like the International Chess Olympiad, hockey tournaments, the F4 street race and the recent surfing festival have positioned Chennai as a sports hub," said Sriharan Balan, managing director of Madura Travels. Yet, industry experts caution that Chennai's vast potential remains underutilized. "There is a dire lack of information about available infrastructure and little consistency in government programmes. TTDC hotels do not match the quality of private ones despite charging the same rates," said a retired tourism official. Others argue that the capital has stagnated. "The Egmore museum still offers the same activities we saw as schoolchildren, while the Kalaignar Centenary Museum has state-of-the-art features like a 5D show. Why not modernize Chennai's museum experience the same way," asked an industry expert. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
