CEO Says AI Is Taking On 'Soul-Crushing Jobs' With Agents That Work 24/7, Never Eat, And Never Need Benefits

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping how major companies run their operations, with some executives saying it's already transforming the workforce. ServiceNow Inc. (NYSE:NOW) CEO Bill McDermott says AI agents are taking over repetitive, draining work—and doing it without lunch breaks or healthcare benefits. AI Steps Into Support Roles "We're slowing down the hiring in jobs that are, quite frankly, soul-crushing jobs," McDermott said in a recent interview with Bloomberg, pointing to IT support as an example. He said 97% of standard software is now generated by AI, and 80% of customer inquiries are fully managed by AI agents. Security and risk management tasks, patchwork, and change management are also handled by these systems. Don't Miss: The same firms that backed Uber, Venmo and eBay are investing in this pre-IPO company disrupting a $1.8T market — Bill Gates Warned About Water Scarcity. "They work hard 24 by seven. You don't have to pay them and they don't need any lunch and they don't have any health care benefits," McDermott said. "AI is affordable and complements our workforce." While ServiceNow is still hiring, it's adding fewer people to these support roles. McDermott predicts other well-run companies will follow the same path, reorganizing around AI and moving away from traditional 20th-century corporate structures. Industry-Wide Shift Salesforce (NYSE:CRM) CEO Marc Benioff told Bloomberg in June that AI now accounts for 30% to 50% of his company's workload, calling the trend a "digital labor revolution." The company has restructured around AI and cut more than 1,000 jobs this year. Benioff says Salesforce's AI operates at about 93% accuracy and is helping employees focus on higher-value tasks. Trending: 'Scrolling To UBI' — Deloitte's #1 fastest-growing software company allows users to earn money on their phones. You can Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) has also warned that AI's effects on the job market are already being felt, especially by younger workers. The bank says unemployment for tech workers ages 20 to 30 has risen nearly 3 percentage points since early 2024. That's more than four times the increase in the overall jobless rate. According to Business Insider, Goldman Sachs Chief Economist Jan Hatzius estimates generative AI will eventually replace 6% to 7% of U.S. jobs within a decade, though many workers could find roles in other industries. McDermott praised the president's recent AI action plan, saying, "We need less regulation and more innovation." He said the government should run more efficiently and transparently, adding that ServiceNow has worked in the public sector for years to achieve those Over AI's Human Cost Still, the idea of replacing large numbers of human jobs with AI is deeply troubling to labor advocates, economists and even tech executives. They warn that corporate enthusiasm for machines that never tire, never demand raises, and never get sick could strip millions of people of their livelihoods. As former Google X executive Mo Gawdat put it in a podcast recently, "CEOs are celebrating that they can now get rid of people and have productivity gains and cost reductions because AI can do that job. The one thing they don't think of is AI will replace them, too." Read Next: In a $34 Trillion Debt Era, The Right AI Could Be Your Financial Advantage — UNLOCKED: 5 NEW TRADES EVERY WEEK. 1 Brilliant Quantum Computing Stock to Buy Before It Soars 70%, According to 1 Wall Street Analyst

Key Points IonQ is taking a unique approach to quantum computing. Quantum computing is expected to reach a turning point around 2030. 10 stocks we like better than IonQ › Wall Street analysts often give one-year price targets for stocks as a guide to where they think the stock is heading. While these projections are inherently flawed and in no way guarantee what will happen to a stock, understanding what the general analyst community thinks about a stock can be helpful in shaping your own research, especially in an area like quantum computing where there's a lot of hype. Kevin Garrigan from Rosenblatt Security recently set a new price target for quantum computing pure play IonQ (NYSE: IONQ). As of Wednesday's market close, IonQ was trading at $41.21 per share. Garrigan's price target is $70, indicating about 70% upside. That's a strong return in a short time frame, but is IonQ stock a buy now? IonQ's trapped ion approach shows potential IonQ is a leading quantum computing company, which is impressive considering that it doesn't have another business to fund its operations. IonQ relies on raising capital in the public markets and various contracts it has to fund its research, unlike many of the big tech competitors in this space, which have massive cash flows to fund their quantum computing research. Despite this disadvantage, IonQ has developed impressive quantum computing technology. IonQ has taken the trapped ion approach to quantum computing, which has benefits and drawbacks. On the plus side, trapped ion architecture has impressive fidelity, and IonQ holds the world record in 1-qubit gate fidelity tests. (A qbit, or quantum bit, is the basic unit of information used in quantum computing to encode data.) It can also be done at room temperature, while other solutions need to be cooled to absolute zero. On the downside, trapped ion quantum computing can have a slightly slower processing speed compared to other solutions. Time will tell whether this is a winning approach, but some of IonQ's early successes indicate that it could be viable. But will that be enough to deliver the $70 stock price that Garrigan thinks is possible? IonQ won't see real business gains for at least a few years Any stock price prediction for IonQ is speculation. While it has a handful of contracts and its quantum computing devices are available for use on all three major cloud computing services, there's really no commercial market for quantum computing right now. However, most quantum computing companies point toward 2030 being a key year, and IonQ is no exception. Its CEO projected that IonQ would be profitable and generate sales of nearly $1 billion by 2030. After that, management expects significant market expansion, with an $87 billion market emerging by 2035. To bridge the gap between profitability and its research phase, IonQ has $1.6 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and outside investments, which should allow it to reach this critical point. While it's impossible to know if IonQ's technology will propel it to be a winning quantum computing pick over the next few years, investors can feel confident that IonQ has the proper resources and backing to at least get to that point. Whether that's worth a $70-per-share target is a different question that I can't answer, but with all of the momentum behind quantum computing, I have a hard time seeing this stock slowing down anytime soon. As a result, I think it's worth an investment, as long as the position size is kept relatively small to help manage risk. Should you buy stock in IonQ right now? Cava Shares Crash. Should Investors Buy the Stock on the Dip or Run for the Hills?

Key Points Cava shares sank after its same-store sales growth slowed. The company still has a long expansion runway, and therefore, plenty of growth potential for the stock. 10 stocks we like better than Cava Group › Shares of Cava Group (NYSE: CAVA) plunged after the Mediterranean-themed restaurant operator's same-store sales growth slowed in its fiscal second quarter (ended July 13), missing expectations. The stock is now down nearly 40% year to date as of this writing. Let's dive into the company's latest results and prospects to see if investors should buy the dip or steer clear of the stock. Same-store sales growth slows After reporting double-digit growth in comparable-restaurant sales (comps) each of the past four quarters, Cava's growth slowed considerably in its fiscal Q2. Comps edged up just 2.1% with guest traffic largely flat. That was well below the 6.1% increase that analysts were expecting, based on market intelligence site StreetAccount's estimates, and a big slowdown from recent quarters. Metric Q2 2024 Q3 2024 Q4 2024 Q1 2025 Q2 2005 Comps growth 14.4% 18.1% 21.2% 10.8% 2.1% Traffic 9.5% 12.9% 15.6% 7.5% -- Price and product mix 4.9% 5.2% 5.6% 3.3% 2.1% Data source: Cava Group. The company started the quarter strong, but once it lapped the introduction of its popular grilled steak a year ago, growth slowed. In response, Cava plans to push forward with more menu innovations, including the introduction of chicken shawarma in the coming weeks and cinnamon sugar pita chips. It said tests of chicken shawarma in select markets went well, and it expects the new item to help drive comps. Overall revenue for the quarter climbed 20% year over year to $278.2 million. It opened 16 new restaurants in the period, bringing its total to 398 locations, a nearly 17% increase compared to a year ago. It entered two new markets during the quarter, in Pittsburgh and Michigan. Management now plans to open between 68 to 70 new locations this fiscal year, up from a prior forecast of 64 to 68. Long term, management's goal is to reach at least 1,000 stores by 2032. Its restaurant-level margins (RLMs) came in at 26.3% in the quarter, down slightly from 26.5% a year ago. RLMs measure how profitable a chain's individual restaurants are before corporate costs, and they're an important restaurant industry metric. The company's RLMs just trail the 27.4% figure of Chipotle Mexican Grill despite having much lower scale than its larger rival. On the profitability front, Cava's adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) climbed 23% year over year to $42.1 million. The company also generated $98.9 million in operating cash flow in the quarter and free cash flow of $21.9 million. Management lowered its full-year comps outlook for the year, taking it from 6% to 8% growth down to a range of 4% to 6% growth. But it maintained its 2025 adjusted EBITDA outlook of $152 million to $159 million, and its RLM margin forecast of 24.8% to 25.2%. Should investors buy the dip? In hindsight, with the restaurant industry's comps growth slowing in general, combined with the lapping of the introduction of Cava's highly popular grilled steak, it may not be that big of a surprise to see the chain's comps growth slow dramatically. That said, it doesn't take away from the fact that Cava is still a highly popular concept. The company's biggest opportunity is still its ongoing expansion. With fewer than 400 locations, it has a long growth runway that it is able to self-fund. These are also highly productive stores with an impressive average unit volume of nearly $3 million and top-tier RLMs. Trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of nearly 123 and a forward price-to-sales ratio (P/S) of 7 based on 2025 analyst estimates, Cava stock is not cheap. However, if the company gets to 1,000 store locations in 2032, it could be generating close to $4.5 billion in revenue with consistent mid-single-digit comps growth. With Chipotle currently sporting a forward P/S ratio of 4.8, Cava stock has the potential to more than double over the next seven years if it were to trade at the same multiple that Chipotle does today. That's a strong outlook, and the restaurant chain could still expand beyond that point. As such, the stock's year-to-date slump does present an interesting opportunity. Long-term investors can consider taking a starter position in Cava now and add more shares on future dips. Should you invest $1,000 in Cava Group right now? Before you buy stock in Cava Group, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the for investors to buy now… and Cava Group wasn't one of them.
