Is supermarket fashion the new high street?
DEPUTY Fashion Editor Abby McHale weighs in:
The supermarkets have really upped their game when it comes to their fashion lines. These days, as you head in to do your weekly food shop you can also pick up a selection of purse-friendly, stylish pieces for all the family. Tesco has just announced a 0.7 per cent increase in the quarter thanks to a 'strong growth in clothing' and M&S has earnt the title of the number one destination for womenswear on the high street.Asda's clothing line George has made £1.5 million for the supermarket in 2023, 80 per cent of Sainsbury's clothes sold at full price rather than discounted and Nutmeg at Morrisons sales are also up 2 per cent in the past year.So what is it about supermarket fashion that is becoming so successful?Apart from the clothing actually being affordable, it's good quality too - with many being part of schemes such as the Better Cotton Initiative.A lot of the time they keep to classic pieces that they know will last the customer year after year. Plus because they buy so much stock they can turn around pieces quickly and buy for cheaper because of the volumes.

Shopper reveals where to snap up an alternative for half-price IT'S the viral autumn buy that has everyone in a chokehold - the Marks & Spencer's checked coat. The trending wardrobe staple has already been dubbed ''THE buy of autumn-winter'', taking the internet by storm. 3 The stylish M&S jacket has gone viral on TikTok, with many dubbing it 'THE buy of autumn-winter Credit: tiktok/@pollydunseath 3 But if you're not willing to spend £90 on the gorgeous buy, fear not, as a fashionista has found an alternative Credit: tiktok/@pollydunseath Advertisement 3 Unlike M&S' pricey version, this stunning jacket retails for just £34 at H&M Credit: H&M However, if you're not ready to fork out for the eye-watering £90 price tag, don't worry - you can still rock a similar look for more than half-price. According to thrifty fashionistas, a rival retailer is flogging their own version of the checked piece - and it's currently on sale too. Informing others about the epic find, one style lover, Polly, took to TikTok to show off the gorgeous jacket. ''I've found a super similar one,'' she said in the video. The must-have autumn piece - Corduroy Collar Twill Jacket - is a near-identical alternative to the viral M&S coat and is available at H&M for just £34. Similarly to the popular M&S buy, this stunning H&M jacket boasts a chic corduroy collar in a deep burgundy-brown colour. Just like the pricey version, the affordable jacket also features two pockets at the front - however, the buy is shorter and doesn't have the gold button detailing. Polly, who posts under the username @pollydunseath, went on: ''This one is more of a cropped, boxy fit. 'Dunnes Stores have done it again', say fashion fan over new chic & effortless office co-ord for autumn ''It's still got the check with the corduroy collar - and it's half the price of the Marks & Spencer's one. ''I love it as a cute alternative,'' she said in the comments. Advertisement Cash-savvy fashionistas can get their hands on the jacket in sizes ranging from XXS to XL - however, the stock may vary from store to store. Why Everyone Is Loving M&S Deputy Fashion Editor Abby McHale revealed to Fabulous why M&S is the shop of the moment. She explained: 'M&S has really pulled it out of the bag this season, there is so much good product to be excited about. 'A brand once known for its 'frumpy fashion' that notion is long gone with it now being one of the leading high street stores for womenswear. 'Its handbag range in particular is super strong with them selling 170% vs plan, with lots more designer dupes for just a fraction of the price. 'The brand is now also the #1 for style perceptions, compared to the #3 spot it had last year, this comes from a really strong design team focused on modernising the brand, not only taking into consideration how the pieces look, but how easy they are to wear also. 'Price is also a big factor with you being able to get many good quality pieces all for under £30. 'After having a sneak peak of the upcoming collection there are so many more amazing pieces that are dropping over the next few months to keep your eyes on. 'Think leopard print dresses, colourful co-ords, embroidered boho jackets, plus lots of swimwear and amazing accessories, as well as great wardrobe staples that will last year on year.' As the piece is sure to become a major hit amongst fashionistas, it's best to head to the local store - or H&M website - pronto to avoid disappointment. The clip, posted just a day ago, has already taken the internet by storm, amassing over 10k views. One M&S shopper commented: ''I found it but the smallest size in store was an 8 and it was MASSIVE on me. ''It looked really silly so I had to leave it behind, so gutted.'' And Lynne, who has even used it to treat sunburn, is full of praise for the wonder product. In a recent TikTok post (@lynnelxx), she said: "Honestly, I can't rave enough about this. "It's a strange consistency. It feels a wee bit hard [but] it just breaks away. You literally need nothing because it goes into a sort of oily consistency. Maura Higgins reveals £6.99 dupe of £29.50 buy she swears by to keep greys away " And then I just rub it into my hands and rub it into my forehead and then a wee drop more for my neck. "I use the body cream for my dry skin due to menopause. It's so soft, takes itchy skin away and doesn't sting. Very amazing product if I'm honest, I swear by it. All my daughters' friends are using it now." Dr Nora Jafaar, Cosmetic Dermatology Expert, recommends using it as a night balm on clean, damp skin to lock in moisture. Speaking to Holland and Barrett, she adds: 'Start with a pea-sized amount and warm it between your fingers. 'It's particularly good on dry and flaky skin, so if you have this skin type you might see results thanks to its barrier-supporting and soothing properties.'
