By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: Chan said his Ministry, together with MPB as the implementing agency, remains committed and active in guiding pepper growers across Malaysia to further stimulate the national pepper industry and develop pepper cultivation areas. TAWAU: Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin said now is the best time to venture into the local pepper industry, given the continuous rise in pepper prices, which are expected to remain stable until the third quarter of 2025. He said that as of July this year, the average price of black pepper had increased by 51 per cent, from RM18,066 per tonne to RM27,240 per tonne compared to the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, the average price of white pepper also rose by 43 per cent for the period January to July 2025, reaching RM37,407 per tonne from RM26,164 per tonne during the same period last year. This favourable price scenario is expected to remain stable until the third quarter of 2025, following the recent strengthening trend of the Malaysian ringgit (RM). He said this when officiating the Tawau Pepper Cultivation Promotion and Encouragement Programme at Tawau Community Hall here Tuesday, which was attended by 250 participants. Also present were Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan and Malaysian Pepper Board (MPB) Director-General Vincent Sawat. At the same time, Chan said his Ministry, together with MPB as the implementing agency, remains committed and active in guiding pepper growers across Malaysia to further stimulate the national pepper industry and develop pepper cultivation areas. In fact, he said, the Government has allocated RM50 million for the implementation of the Pepper Industry Upstream Development Programme (PHIL) under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) from 2021 to 2025. To date, he added, a total of 5,200 pepper growers nationwide, cultivating a total area of 721.9 hectares, have benefited from the New Pepper Planting Scheme (STLB), with total assistance valued at RM28.7 million. Meanwhile, 10,587 pepper growers have received assistance under the Mature Pepper Planting Scheme (STLM), covering a cultivated area of 1,824 hectares, involving assistance totalling around RM35.5 million. Chan said that in Sabah, 132 recipients under the STLB are cultivating 20.9 hectares of pepper, with assistance worth RM769,940. At the same time, 197 growers cultivating 27.2 hectares of pepper in Sabah have benefited from the STLM, with estimated total assistance worth RM440,000. Chan believes pepper cultivation in Sabah has great potential, considering the advantage of the State's hilly terrain and topography, which are suitable for pepper planting. In addition, he said the State is also equipped with infrastructure, logistics facilities and port access that support pepper trade activities, as well as having an open market for selling agricultural produce such as vegetables, fruits and various fresh and dried food products. He is confident that the pepper cultivation development will not only impact the State's economy positively but also generate additional income for existing commodity growers who adopt pepper as an alternative or supplementary crop. 'This industry can also create new job opportunities, especially in the plantation sector,' he said. As such, he urged Sabahans to seize the opportunities provided by the Government to increase household income through pepper cultivation and the innovation of new downstream products, which could ultimately lead to greater contributions from the agri-commodity sector to the national economy. He said the food-based downstream product industry is one of the most popular in Sabah, considering the State's status as a major tourism hub, attracting tourists particularly from China, South Korea and Brunei. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Gamuda's new job win forecasts at RM22-27 billion

Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 Text Size: Gamuda also anticipates securing more renewable energy and transmission projects in Australia in the near term, supported by the nation's aggressive target of achieving an 82 per cent renewable generation mix by 2030. Kuala Lumpur: Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd (Kenanga IB) has raised Gamuda Bhd's financial year 2026 (FY2026) and FY2027 new job win forecasts to RM22 billion and RM27 billion, respectively, from RM20 billion and RM25 billion previously. It attributed the additional RM2 billion per year to projects in Australia. In a note, the investment bank also said it is maintaining its FY25 new job win assumption at RM17 billion. 'With project progress expected to slow in FY2026 before accelerating in FY2027, we forecast construction revenue to remain steady at RM15 billion in FY2026, before rising to RM22 billion in FY2027 from our previous assumption of RM18 billion,' it said. Kenanga IB said there are no changes to its FY2025 and FY2026 earnings forecasts, while its FY2027 forecast has been revised upwards to RM1.95 billion from RM1.69 billion previously. The bank also highlighted that data centres remain the key driver of Malaysia's tender momentum, with results expected soon from five to seven projects, while the outcome for Pearl Computing's data centre in Springhill is anticipated in 2026. 'We expect Gamuda to likely secure at least half of these data centre projects,' it said. Meanwhile, the bank said the Ulu Padas water supply project is expected to be finalised soon, and Gamuda is actively bidding for the Penang Light Rail Transit Package 3 (turnkey system and rolling stock contracts). In addition, it expects Gamuda to secure the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning contract for the Kerian water treatment and distribution infrastructure in the first half of 2026 (1H 2026). The group also stands a strong chance of winning another project in Taiwan. As such, Kenanga IB believes Gamuda remains on track to achieve its targeted outstanding order book of RM40–RM45 billion by end-2025. Gamuda also anticipates securing more renewable energy and transmission projects in Australia in the near term, supported by the nation's aggressive target of achieving an 82 per cent renewable generation mix by 2030. Kenanga IB said it remains confident in these ventures due to earnings visibility and the diversification of Gamuda's income streams. The bank maintained its 'outperform' call on Gamuda, with a higher target price of RM6.10. The construction sector is expected to see increased job flows in the second half of this year (2H 2025), driven by the gradual rollout of major public-sector infrastructure projects, said MBSB Investment Bank Bhd. In a note, the investment bank said earnings visibility is expected to improve in 2H 2025, supported by active industrial job flows such as the Penang light rail transit (LRT) Mutiara Line and data centre prospects, alongside the multi-year public infrastructure roadmap under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). It said the Penang LRT has officially commenced following the issuance of Notice to Proceed, while land acquisitions for Mass Rapid Transit 3 (MRT3) are underway, unlocking the RM31 billion civil works portion of the project pipeline. Demand for data centres also remains structurally strong, with contractors continuing to secure hyperscale mandates as part of Southeast Asia's digital infrastructure boom, underpinned by robust leasing activity, cost competitiveness, and long-term client partnerships. 'Overall, we view this as a positive development despite the headwinds faced by the construction sector in 1H 2025, stemming from delays in project rollouts within the pipeline and global trade tensions,' it said. MBSB Investment has maintained its 'positive' stance for the sector, citing a combination of easing cost pressures, resilient private-sector demand, and improved public project execution. The bank noted that steel bar prices have continued to decline, down 9.91 per cent year-to-date and 19.5 per cent year-on-year, despite recent monthly fluctuations, while cement prices remain stable due to disciplined domestic production and raw material cost control, ensuring a favourable cost environment for contractors. 'These cost dynamics, combined with the gradual easing of labour constraints and the ability to pass through the Sales and Service Tax and tariff-related costs, continue to support profitability in ongoing projects. 'Momentum is also improving on the demand side,' it added.

Ex-foundation CEO learned of Najib's AmBank accounts from media reports

FORMER Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia (YR1M) CEO Ung Su Ling only learned from media reports that the AmBank accounts receiving RM42 million belonged to former Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak. As reported by an online portal today, Ung told the High Court that she was unaware that the funds came from SRC International Sdn Bhd when instructed by Najib's then principal private secretary the late Azlin Alias to transfer them via Ihsan Perdana Sdn Bhd (IPSB). The funds were deposited into two AmBank accounts ending in 880 and 906, between late 2014 and early 2015. Ung confirmed arranging three transfers from IPSB — RM27 million, RM5 million and RM10 million — but said she had no additional information about the money. 'At the material time, I was not aware of the source of these funds, nor was I informed of the same by Azlin. I can attest that these funds did not originate from nor belong to YR1M. 'However, based on subsequent media reports and the decision of the SRC International case, I understand that these funds, which were transferred to IPSB, originated from SRC,' she said during examination-in-chief. Ung acted on Azlin's instructions to transfer the funds to the specified bank accounts without knowing who owned them. She was testifying as the first witness for the plaintiffs in SRC International and its subsidiary Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd's lawsuit against Najib to recover RM42 million allegedly misappropriated from SRC International 's accounts. When asked about the link between YR1M and IPSB, Ung explained that YR1M supported IPSB financially through grants and funding for community programmes in line with the 1Malaysia initiative. During cross-examination by defence lawyer Farhan Shafee, she said she never felt it necessary to seek further details about the funds. In August 2022, Najib was found guilty on seven counts of abuse of power, money laundering, and criminal breach of trust involving SRC 1Malaysia's funds. His initial sentence of 12 years in prison and a RM210 million fine was later reduced to six years and RM50 million through a royal pardon. Sultan Nazrin inaugurates Sultan Muzzaffar Shah Bridge in Kuala Kangsar

KUALA KANGSAR: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, officially opened the Sultan Muzzaffar Shah Bridge at Dataran Manong today. The royal couple arrived at 11 am, accompanied by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and his wife. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi and Public Works Department director-general Datuk Roslan Ismail were also present. Nanta highlighted that the 300-metre bridge and three-kilometre connecting road now link Pekan Manong and Kampung Seberang Manong. 'The construction of this bridge not only improves mobility for the people, but also strengthens community ties, stimulates the growth of tourism, trade, and agriculture sectors, as well as opens more economic opportunities for residents in the surrounding areas,' he said. He added that the project symbolises well-planned progress under the Malaysia MADANI spirit. Nanta expressed gratitude to all parties involved in the successful completion of the bridge. 'I believe that with the cooperation between the federal and state governments, more high-impact development projects can be implemented in Perak Darul Ridzuan for the well-being of its people,' he said. The RM37 million bridge was completed on Oct 25, 2019, under the 11th Malaysia Plan. - Bernama
