Samsung DeX could finally see a big makeover according to One UI 8 test build
Android 16 might finally bring a desktop mode to the mobile operating system for the first time, and Samsung may be iterating on top of it with a design of its desktop mode DeX, similar to its One UI skin.
If you haven't used DeX before, it's a desktop client Samsung built on top of Android that enables Galaxy smartphones to run a UI that mimics a desktop PC when plugged into or wirelessly connected to an external monitor. Samsung tablets have this feature natively using their own displays.
Depending on your Samsung device, DeX can is a great tool for essentially making your phone a portable PC. We found DeX worked great on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 last year. You may like
However, it feels left behind on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, largely due to a lack of innovation since the S23 Ultra and the controversial decision to eliminate Bluetooth support for the S Pen.

Both Google and Samsung are moving up their usual timelines for releasing new versions of their operating systems this year. And DevOfIpos on X, spotted a new version of in a test version of One UI 8, which should launch in July.
According to Ipos, they were able to get this redesigned DeX running on a Galaxy S25 Ultra that has a test version One UI 8 installed.
From what we can see in screenshots they posted, the updated DeX utilizes a taskbar that opens up an app drawer, a new Quick Settings design and window management.

A number of these features already exist, but the look and feel appears different, more in line with the reported Google version of a desktop mode.
We've written before that Samsung DeX is an underrated feature that other phones should copy but also needs to be improved. Hopefully, Google's version pushes Samsung to innovate a bit.

Reddit says this is the best laptop — here's what I think as a laptop reviewer
I recently wrote an article about the gaming laptops Reddit recommends, and found the experience enlightening as a laptop reviewer of 5+ years. To that end, I've now searched Reddit for the best laptops its users recommend for everyday work. As with their recommendations for the best gaming laptops, Redditors are very knowledgeable on this subject and generally deliver solid advice. I mostly referenced this post since it was the first Reddit link that popped up on Google when I searched for 'best laptop.' That said, I also checked out a couple of similar posts to get a general idea of what Redditors think. The community has an affinity for Lenovo laptops, particularly ThinkBooks and ThinkPads. The MacBook Air also gets a lot of love, which doesn't surprise me since it's one of the best MacBooks. Here are some of the top laptops that Reddit recommends, and what I think of these recommendations as a professional laptop reviewer. MacBooks come up many times in the post linked above. Specifically, Redditors recommended the 13-inch MacBook Air M4 for its strong performance and long battery life. Surprisingly, no one mentioned its portability, which is one of the main reasons to get Apple's 'Air' laptop. Regardless, I agree with Reddit on this one. The MacBook Air is not only a great laptop to travel with, but as I recently wrote, it also makes for a fine desktop replacement. While folks recommended the MacBook Air, two concerns popped up. The first is the Apple ecosystem. 'Some people recommend the MacBook M4 Air, which seems to be a really good machine, although I am slightly concerned by the fact that I don't own any other Apple products,' said user LenkkiNakki. However, user T1nyRaccoon responded by saying you 'don't need other stuff in the Apple ecosystem to have [a MacBook Air], but if you plan on sending stuff to and from your phone or want to send messages from your laptop, an iPhone would be useful.' The 13-inch MacBook Air M4 offers the same design as the previous model but delivers better performance and a sharper camera while also delivering long battery life. We wish Apple had included a nano-texture display option to reduce glare and that the SSD were a bit faster, but the $200 price cut makes this configuration hard to pass up. In this post, some users discussed their dislike of what they call the 'Apple Tax,' or how expensive MacBooks can get when you want to configure them with more RAM or storage. T1nyRaccoon also shares this sentiment, saying that the 'downside is [Apple] has abysmal storage/RAM base configurations and costs a ton to upgrade.' They correctly say that it would cost you an extra $200 if you want a MacBook Air with 512GB of storage (entry-level has 256GB). That said, new MacBooks are frequently on sale at Amazon. For instance, you can currently buy a 13-inch MacBook Air M4 with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage for $999, which is a $200 savings. If I were shopping for a new MacBook, I'd go through Amazon instead of Apple's online store. As I mentioned in the intro, many Redditors like Lenovo laptops. This also doesn't surprise me since laptops like ThinkBooks are pretty ubiquitous for office workers. ThinkPads, which is another line of business-focused Lenovo laptops, also came up in conversations. Generally, ThinkBooks are popular for those who work at home or who operate a small business, while ThinkPads are better for those who frequently travel for work. Though ThinkPads and ThinkBooks received a lot of praise, some users said to stay away from Lenovo laptops. 'Lenovo [equals] poor quality, cheap parts, shady, misleading models,' said user s1gnt. They also said that ThinkPads are not 'iconic device(s)' and are 'pure hype and dated.' Ouch! A user named Opti_span said they used a Lenovo laptop for three years and that it 'basically fell apart.' They didn't specify which Lenovo laptop, however. The one Lenovo laptop people recommended was the ThinkPad X1 Carbon. We reviewed the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition and awarded it 3.5 out of 5 stars. Though not a terrible machine, we feel that its underwhelming performance doesn't justify its high $1,870 starting price. Another Windows laptop that Reddit recommends is the latest model of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14. While this is a gaming laptop, it doesn't look like one, which makes it great if you're working in an office. Of all the Windows laptops I saw in the Reddit threads I read, this is the machine I would recommend. I called last year's Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 the MacBook of gaming laptops thanks to its elegant design and killer performance. That laptop is currently on sale for $1,439 at Best Buy, and is a solid choice even if it doesn't have the latest GPU. If you want the latest model, there's a configuration with an RTX 5070 that's on sale at Best Buy for $1,799, which is $350 off. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024) delivers the goods thanks to its thin design, powerful performance, gorgeous OLED display and excellent typing experience. Though there's a newer model available, this Windows laptop is still perfect for everyday work and for gaming. I'm once again impressed by Reddit's laptop choices. The 13-inch MacBook Air M4 might seem like an obvious one, but there's a reason it's at the top of our best MacBook and best laptops buying guides. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14/16 is another fantastic option for folks who want a Windows laptop with enough power for work and play. If you're in the market for a new notebook, check those out! iPhone 17 Air — here's where Apple can succeed where Samsung failed
Samsung intended to start a revolution when it launched the Galaxy S25 Edge not long ago, but the reality is that the phone turned out to be underwhelming. I've been using it for more than two months now, and given my experience with the ultra-thin phone, Apple certainly has the opportunity to steal its thunder with the iPhone 17 Air. It's one of the many new iPhones tipped for reveal at an upcoming rumored Apple September event. The iPhone 17 Air could end up being the most compelling model the company introduces in years. I've been keeping tabs on all the rumors and leaks, so while it's unlikely we'll see dramatic changes between now and its reveal, there are still ways Apple could make it a more compelling thin phone. I know there are areas where we could see compromises, but I'll explain how the iPhone 17 Air could still succeed where the Galaxy S25 Edge failed. Here's how. Since I'm a camera guy, I'm most interested in the cameras rumored to accompany the iPhone 17 Air — or should I say, camera? While I'm a bit forgiving about Apple's decision to give the iPhone 16e a single rear camera, it feels wrong to do it with the iPhone 17 Air. So far, the rumors suggest that it will have a single 48MP camera on the back, which isn't appetizing when you're used to a triple camera setup. This might be an area where I could say the Galaxy S25 Edge is better than the iPhone 17 Air, but Apple can still surprise us. That's because I need to just look back at my 200 photo shootout between the iPhone 16e and Pixel 9a, like the side-by-side shot above. Even though the iPhone 16e narrowly lost, it did impress me for its strong telephoto and dynamic range performances. It's proof of Apple's excellent image processing with its iPhones, so it could do the same for the iPhone 17 Air. Another thing worth pointing out is all the leaked images and renders of the iPhone 17 Air. The back of the phone shows a prominent camera bar that spans one side to the other, which could lead me to suspect that there could be a larger sensor in there — perhaps the same one for the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. The only thing it would lack is an ultrawide, but I wouldn't mind keeping it to just a single camera if its field of view ends up being a smidge wider. There's no denying that the iPhone 17 Air is going to be a remarkable feat of engineering for a modern device. So far, it looks like it's going to be thinner than the Galaxy S25 Edge with rumors of it being as thin as 5.5mm. In comparison, the S25 Edge measures in at 5.8mm. As I've noted in my Galaxy S25 Edge review, the biggest compromise to designing a thin phone is that battery life is dramatically impacted. A thinner phone means less room for a battery, subsequently resulting in a much shorter battery life. However, Apple could squash any battery drain concerns with the iPhone 17 Air — by looking at what the current iOS 26 beta offers. Apple's latest iPhone software has a ton of features, but one that's overlooked is the new adaptive power mode. I suspect this could be the answer to addressing any anxiety about its battery endurance, by dynamically adjusting the phone's performance to get more juice out of the battery. Plus, I think the A19 Pro chip rumored to power the iPhone 17 Air would be power efficient enough to hopefully make it last longer than the standard iPhone 17. I'm hoping that the iPhone 17 Air ends up taking the same $899 price point that the current iPhone 16 Plus holds in Apple's lineup. However, I'm not as optimistic about that given the price of the Galaxy S25 Edge and Galaxy Z Fold 7. There are rumors that the iPhone 17 Air could end up being even more costly than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Hopefully, that's not true because it would have an even tougher time convincing people (myself included). Realistically, Apple could fit the Air in between the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max — which would put it at $1,099, assuming Apple maintains its pricing structure from before. This would put it in direct competition with the Galaxy S25 Edge, but a higher price point still wouldn't make it a dealbreaker. Even though I'm all about the best cheap phones, I would be shocked if there aren't deals for the iPhone 17 Air at launch to bring down its price. Nearly every major carrier will offer some kind of deal because that's been their standard procedure with every major phone release. Take the iPhone 16 Pro Max last year when it dropped down in price to a penny less than a month after its launch. Sure, you'll have to sign off on some sort of phone plan, but the end result was getting a new iPhone on the cheap. This could happen for the iPhone 17 Air, so I'm not too worried about a higher price point. It would only really affect those buying the phone outright. Made by Google 2025: Here's All the Top Pixel 10 Leaks and Rumors Ahead of Launch
The new Pixel 10 line will debut on Aug. 20 at the Made by Google event, and it almost feels like we've already seen the phones revealed thanks to a plethora of rumors and presumed leaks of the handsets, which seem like they'll include both smartphones and a foldable. Google isn't hiding that the Pixel 10 is coming, as the company itself posted multiple stylized shots of the phone to promote its launch event. But the company is still keeping detailed specs and features of the Pixel 10 line to itself, so we won't get the full picture until the company's official reveal. Several recent rumors suggest a lot of new life to the phone line, though. While we do expect the Pixel line to continue the overall lineup of the Pixel 9 -- including a base Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold -- rumors are pointing to significant changes to what's inside these phones to make them more feature-packed than ever. We've rounded up the biggest rumors we've found so far about the Pixel 10 line here, and will continue updating as we hear more ahead of the Aug. 20 event. Watch this: Google Pixel 10 Revealed in Promo, iOS 26 Public Beta to Open, and More | Tech Today 03:16 Pixel 10, 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL's release date, pricing and cameras Starting with the three non-folding phones in the Pixel 10 line that are getting revealed on Aug. 20, we expect the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL to look similar to the Pixel 9 line on the outside. This includes the same rounded camera bar on the back. The entry-level Pixel 10 will get a brand new third rear camera. While we can see the third camera in the photos Google posted of the Pixel 10, according to a chart posted by known leaker Evan Blass, this will be a 10.8-megapixel telephoto camera that will join a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 13-megapixel ultrawide. This will help the Pixel 10 compare better with the base Galaxy S25, which also has a telephoto camera. The 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL will continue to be differentiated from the standard Pixel 10 with a higher-specced camera system, which includes a 50-megapixel wide-angle, 48-megapixel ultrawide and a 48-megapixel telephoto, according to the same chart posted by Blass. The colors for the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro phones also appear to have leaked, with Android Headlines reporting that the base Pixel 10 will come in Obsidian, Indigo, Frost and Lemonade editions. These names would roughly correspond to a black, blueish purple, light blue and yellow colors, respectively. The Pro models will also come in four colors, with Android Headlines reporting models named Obsidian, Porcelain, Moonstone and Jade. Those should roughly match up to black, white, gray and a light green. More photos of these phones were posted by Blass, purporting to be the Pixel 10 lineup from the front, back and side profiles Despite the concerns with tariffs, the Pixel 10 line is rumored to keep the same starting prices as the Pixel 9 line. Celso Bulgatti/CNET Pixel 10 could support Qi2 magnetic charging The Pixel 10 series could support magnetic accessories, making it one of the few Android phones that would work with many of the MagSafe accessories that were first built to work with Apple's iPhone. That's because the Pixel 10 is rumored to fully support Qi2 wireless charging, which supports magnetic alignment and has magnets built into the phone without needing a case. An image posted by Blass appears to show a Pixel 10 with a circular wireless charger attached to the back, likely using magnets similar to how MagSafe works with the iPhone. If this is the case, it's a huge step for the Qi2 wireless standard, as the only other Android phone so far that supports magnetic accessories is the HMD Skyline. This would allow the Pixel 10 series to natively work with magnetic phone chargers, wallets, mounts and other accessories. Google might also create its own branding for this feature, as an Android Authority report claims that official Pixel 10 accessories that magnetically attach would be called PixelSnap. If this comes true, it would also make it easier to swap accessories between the iPhone and the Pixel. In addition to the iPhone's support for charging over USB-C, this would mean that MagSafe accessories first purchased to use with an iPhone should work just as well when swapping over to a Pixel 10 phone. The Pixel 9 includes the Tensor G4 processor, and its successor for the Pixel 10 is reportedly made by TSMC. James Martin/CNET Google's Tensor G5 chip Following last year's Tensor G4 chip in the Pixel 9 lineup, we presume that the Pixel 10 phones will be powered by a (supposedly named) Tensor G5 chip. We've heard a few Tensor G5 rumors, including that it will be made on an industry-standard 3nm process by chip fabricator TSMC, according to an Android Authority March report. Other rumors are less promising, like a July report from WCCFTech suggesting that while the Tensor G5 is a significant upgrade on last year's Tensor G4, a leaked benchmark test claims it will run slower than the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor that's used in Samsung's Galaxy S25 line and the OnePlus 13. That Qualcomm processor might also soon be surpassed by the next Qualcomm silicon coming at Snapdragon Summit in September. That's not to imply the phone itself will perform slowly, as the same report says it will run faster than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor that powers Whether the Tensor G5 lags behind other mobile chips isn't as worrying as it might seem, since the Tensor chips are built for Google's Pixel devices -- and those don't seem to be underperforming in daily use. As CNET Editor-at-Large Andy Lanxon said about the Tensor G4 powering the Pixel 9 Pro XL, "On the one hand, it's disappointing not to see more of a tangible improvement over the predecessor. On the other hand, it doesn't feel like it's lacking in power in any major way." The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is presumed to have a similar look to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold (pictured here), but with the newer processor. James Martin/CNET Pixel 10 Pro Fold Google on Aug. 12 released a video that shows off what the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will look like. This peek only provides a look at the phone's design -- which seems to be similar to last year's Pixel 9 Pro Fold -- saving a more detailed look at its specs and cameras for the Aug. 20 event. The more iterative design makes sense, as last year's Pixel 9 Pro Fold already debuted a larger overhaul that altered its design from the wider passport-size original Pixel Fold to a taller, narrower format similar to other foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. One Pixel 10 Pro Fold rumor from WCCFTech only shared details about the supposed Tensor chip powering it. But a recent rumor from Blass suggests we could expect the usual upgrades: a new Tensor G5 chip, perhaps slight spec upgrades and maybe even similar camera or battery upgrades if they are announced for the Pixel 10 lineup. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold would presumably get Android 16 out of the box, but since that software upgrade has been released early (mere weeks after Google I/O 2025), last year's Pixel 9 Pro Fold already has that update. We'll keep updating this roundup as we get closer to Google's Aug. 20 event for the Pixel 10 series.
