Cutting down on a certain food group could potentially lower your risk of cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, according to health experts.
A study published in the Neurology Journal, which involved 133,771 participants, discovered that regular and long-term consumption of processed red meat was linked not only to an increased risk of dementia but also to poorer cognitive function. Processed red meats include foods such as bacon, sausages, hot dogs, salami, corned beef, and beef jerky.

Therefore, swapping out red meat from your diet could help reduce your risk of developing dementia in later life, whilst also improving your cognitive function. A range of protein sources and whole foods can be introduced into your diet as alternatives to red meat.

To further decrease the risk of dementia, a recent study by scientists at the American Society for Nutritio has highlighted the benefits of the Mediterranean-Dash Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet and the DASH diet. These diets emphasise foods like leafy greens, vegetables, nuts, and healthy fats.
The principles of the DASH diet, which promotes foods that help lower blood pressure, are combined with those of the Mediterranean diet.

Regardless of age, the MIND diet has been shown to be equally beneficial in supporting cognitive function throughout a person's life. According to Professor Song-Yi Park of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, "Our study findings confirm that healthy dietary patterns in mid to late life and their improvement over time may prevent Alzheimer's and related dementias."
Professor Park adds: "This suggests that it is never too late to adopt a healthy diet to prevent dementia."
Notably, a further examination of the data revealed that individuals who consistently adhered to or improved their adherence to the MIND diet over a 10-year period had a 25% lower risk of developing dementia compared to those with poorer adherence.

This finding held true across various age groups and ethnicities, even among those who did not initially follow the diet closely.
The MIND diet
The MIND diet is a fusion of the Mediterranean diet and DASH, incorporating food groups from both diets.

Mediterranean diet
There's no rigid meal plan for the Mediterranean diet. However, generally, individuals are expected to consume some of the following regularly:

Meanwhile, followers of this diet are advised to reduce consumption of foods high in saturated fats such as fatty meats, full-fat dairy products, fizzy drinks, sweets, and tropical oils such as coconut and palm oils.

Scientists say the treatment - called trontinemab - could be the most powerful weapon yet against dementia, as they look into giving the drug to people with no symptoms in the hopes of preventing disease. Researchers said the drug seemed to clear plaques - the abnormal build-up of proteins around brain cells that cause damage and disrupt function - quicker than other drugs licensed to treat Alzheimer's. Trontinemab cleared out plaques and eliminated visible signs of the the disease within 28 weeks for nine out of 10 patients. Drug-maker Roche is now conducting another trial to see if plaque clearance also improves patients' memory. The 18-month study includes 1,600 people, the Telegraph reported. Separate research will examine whether the drug could be given to people without any signs of dementia, just as statins are used to ward off heart disease. Experts hope the drug could stop patients from developing dementia symptoms at all, if it is given early enough. They described the findings so far as 'very promising', suggesting that the drug was much more powerful than existing ones while leading to fewer side effects - as it was able to clear plaques better within seven months that other drugs can in 18 months. Roche's chief medical officer Levi Garraway said: 'Alzheimer's disease represents one of the greatest challenges in healthcare today and tackling it requires early detection and effective therapeutics. 'Trontinemab is designed to target a key driver of Alzheimer's disease biology more effectively in the brain. "With plans for phase three trials in both early symptomatic and pre-clinical Alzheimer's disease, we are advancing science with the goal of delaying - and ultimately preventing - progression of this devastating condition.' Prof Sir John Hardy, the chairman of molecular biology of neurological disease at University College London's Institute of Neurology told the Telegraph trontinemab could be 'game-changing'. The scientist, who was the first to identify the role of amyloid plaques in Alzeheimer's, said: 'This is absolutely great news. "It sucks the plaque out of the brain really quickly, much faster than we have seen with lecanemab or donanemab.' Both are Alzheimer's drugs approved for used in the UK, which target amyloid proteins in the brain to slow disease progression. However, neither treatment is offered on the NHS, as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) deemed them too expensive - in large part because patients need frequent scans to monitor for brain swelling and bleeds. Prof Hardy added: 'There is no doubt [trontinemab] could be game-changing. "We hope that if we can use these drugs to people early, we can halt the progression of disease, even before people have symptoms. "Now we need to see the size of the clinical effect. 'These results show it is much faster and safer than previous drugs, which means less monitoring. "That brings down the cost significantly, it means fewer MRI scans, so that would surely mean it would get Nice approval.' Early signs of dementia It's not unusual for your memory to lapse a bit as you get older. But dementia is different from 'just getting old' as it will cause noticeable - rather than gradual - changes to mental abilities and make managing everyday tasks and activities increasingly difficult. The symptoms of dementia may be small to start with, but get worse over time. Below are some examples of possible signs. Memory loss Memory loss is a key sign of dementia. This can include: Forgetting something you were only recently told. You may ask for the same information repeatedly – for example, 'Are the doors locked?' Putting objects in unusual places – for example, putting your house keys in the refrigerator. Being unable to learn new tasks, like how to use a new washing machine. Planning and decision making issues People with dementia can have difficulty with planning and decision making. This can include: Getting very confused when planning or thinking things through. Struggling to stay focused on a single task. Not making informed, careful decisions when dealing with money or looking at risks. Finding it hard to manage regular payments, budgets or monthly bills. Problems with language and understanding In people with dementia, this can manifest as: Having frequent problems finding the right word or regularly referring to objects as 'that thing'. Finding it hard to take part in conversations. Regularly being unable to follow what someone is saying even without distractions. Losing sense of time and place Dementia can cause problems with orientation, including: Losing track of the date, season or the passage of time. Getting lost in a place that is familiar or that should be easy to find your way around – for example, a supermarket. Source: Alzheimer's Society Trials for lecanemab and donanemab showed the drugs helped clear toxic clumps out of the brain and slow nerve damage caused by Alzheimer's by 27 per cent and 35 per cent respectively, over the course of 18 months. But the treatments did present a risk of brain swelling and brain bleeds, meaning patients needed intense monitoring. Trontinemab appears to be safer and cause fewer side effects, with less than five per cent of patients showing abnormal results on their brain scans. All of these cases were quickly resolved, researchers said. The drug - administered by infusion into the bloodstream - also doesn't need to be given a frequently. Upcoming trials will examine the impact of giving the drug to patients once a month for six months, then every three months. Trontinemab has been designed to efficiently bypass the blood-brain barrier, a protective layer of cells that stops harmful substances in the blood stream from attacking the brain and spinal cord. This barrier can make it hard for many drugs to reach the brain. Prof Jonathan Schott, the chief medical officer at Alzheimer's Research UK, told the Telegraph: 'We urgently need a range of treatments for Alzheimer's that are effective and safe for the people affected by this devastating disease. 'Evidence presented at the Alzheimer's Association conference in Toronto on trontinemab is very promising, showing that the drug can effectively and rapidly clear amyloid from the brain, seemingly with very few side effects. 'We now need to see whether these early stage results carry through to later stage clinical trials, which are planned to start later this year, including in the UK. "These trials will show whether the drug is not only safe, but impacts on memory, thinking and quality of life.' He said it was 'exciting' that the drug would now be tested in some people without symptoms under the phase three trials.

A new study has drummed home the importance of lifestyle changes in the battle against preventing dementia—and what you're putting on your plate is key. The US POINTER trial involved more than 2,000 men and women aged between 60 and 79, who were at risk of developing dementia. Subjects were given lifestyle interventions focused on physical activity, diet, brain training, and social engagement, and were monitored for two years. They were instructed to follow the MIND diet —short for Mediterranean-Dash Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay—an eating pattern which combines key features of the Mediterranean diet with a dramatic reduction in salt to help control blood pressure. The participants were split into two groups, and given either a structured or self-guided programme, reports medical journal JAMA. The study author wrote that after two years, both groups showed cognitive improvements compared with the start of the experiment. The were assessed on their memory, executive function, and processing speeds, with the structured group noted as performing slightly better. Adherence to the plan was high in both groups, with less than four per cent of people dropping out. Lead Researcher Dr Jonathan M Schott said: 'From a pragmatic clinical and public health perspective, the key message of US POINTER may be that even relatively modest lifestyle changes can support cognitive health in aging populations.' The MIND diet has 15 components, including 10 'brain-healthy food groups'—green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, nuts, berries, beans, whole grains, fish, poultry, olive oil and wine. It also has five unhealthy groups that comprise red meats, butter and stick margarine, cheese, pastries and sweets, and fried or fast food. The MIND diet includes at least three servings of wholegrains, a salad and one other vegetable every day. It also involves snacking most days on nuts and eating beans every other day or so, poultry and berries at least twice a week and fish at least once a week. Dieters must limit eating the designated unhealthy foods, eating less than one tablespoon of butter a day and eating cheese, fried or fast food less than once a week. The Alzheimer's Society estimate that by 2040 there will be 1.4 million people living with dementia in the UK. Dementia is an umbrella term for several brain diseases that affect memory, thinking and cognition, and the most common of those in the UK is Alzheimer's. Previous studies have highlighted four 'pathways' to developing the memory-robbing illness, but there's increasing evidence to support that there are ways to avoid, or at least defer the onset of, the disease. American researchers analysed data from more than 24,000 patients and identified psychiatric conditions, brain dysfunction illnesses, mild cognitive impairments and heart disease, as all leading to the debilitating disorder. A landmark study from Finland which inspired the US POINTER study, the FINGER trial, monitored 1,200 people who were at risk of cognitive decline because of lifestyle factors such as lack of exercise and high blood pressure. It found that interventions to help with diet, exercise and cognitive training significantly improved or maintained cognitive function, protecting the cohort from succumbing to the disease, or at least delaying its onset. In 2020, the Lancet Consortium on Dementia Prevention concluded that 40 per cent of dementia cases could be prevented or delayed by targeting 12 modifiable risk factors, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, physical inactivity, excess alcohol intake and smoking. Scientists have previously suggested that the high levels of antioxidant compounds in the MIND diet can protect the brain from harmful inflammation that fuels dementia. Up to four in 10 dementia cases are thought to be attributed to lifestyle factors such as poor diet and lack of exercise. Around 944,000 people in the UK are thought to be living with dementia, while the figure is thought to be around 7million in the US. Analysis by the Alzheimer's Society estimated the overall annual cost of the dementia to the UK is £42billion a year, with families bearing the brunt. An ageing population means these costs—which include lost earnings of unpaid carers—are set to soar to £90billion in the next 15 years. Alzheimer's Research UK analysis found 74,261 people died from dementia in 2022 compared with 69,178 a year earlier, making it the country's biggest killer. Classic early signs of dementia are memory loss, difficulty concentrating, communication issues and mood problems. But there are other lesser known signs, with earlier studies connecting changes in sight, hearing, touch and balance with the early stages of the disease. Experts have called for these sensory changes to be included in diagnostic tests to help people be diagnosed sooner.

David Hayes, 82, from Bolton, accidentally ingested the liquid and was admitted to hospital the next day, on April 16. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 David mistook detergent for milk He had vomited after drinking the tea and is believed to have inhaled the detergent and stomach acid into his lungs causing fatal damage. Doctors diagnosed him with pneumonitis, swelling of the lungs, thought to have been triggered by chemical aspiration. Despite treatment with antibiotics, steroids and pain relief, his condition worsened and he sadly died five days later, on April 21. An inquest held at Bolton Coroner's Court on July 17 concluded his death was accidental. The official cause was pneumonitis and aspiration due to ingestion of a chemical substance. David had Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia which affects memory, thinking skills and other mental abilities. He had previously been discharged from hospital the day before his final admission, following an earlier accidental detergent ingestion. Coroner Michael Pemberton said: 'This had occurred when he had made a cup of tea at home and put washing detergent into the cup instead of milk after an apparent confusion. "He had vomited following the ingestion and it is likely that he aspirated.' Following the inquest, the coroner issued a formal warning to the Government and major charities, urging action to prevent similar deaths. Easy, everyday ways to prevent dementia He wrote to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, Age UK, Dementia UK and the Alzheimer's Society, highlighting safety concerns around the packaging of household cleaning products. He said the detergent had been stored in a plastic bottle that resembled a milk carton, with a screw top and no childproof features. This, he said, made it 'easily accessible by a person with reduced capacity or dementia, or even a child'. While the liquid was classed as low toxicity, it still caused vomiting and aspiration in Mr Hayes, ultimately leading to his death. The corner said there was "a risk of similar events". He said this was because "the colouring of the liquid is similar to items which a person suffering from an infirmity such as dementia may get confused - here milk". He also warned that "public knowledge of these risks is not likely to be at a level where households in which vulnerable adults reside are aware of the need to safeguard detergents and make them less accessible." He had been diagnosed with dementia five years earlier. Is it ageing or dementia? Dementia - the most common form of which is Alzheimer's - comes on slowly over time. As the disease progresses, symptoms can become more severe. But at the beginning, the symptoms can be subtle or mistaken for normal memory issues related to ageing. The US National Institute on Aging gives some examples of what is considered normal forgetfulness in old age, and dementia disease. You can refer to these above. For example, it is normal for an ageing person to forget which word to use from time-to-time, but difficulting having conversation would be more indicative of dementia. Katie Puckering, Head of Alzheimer's Research UK's Information Services team, previously told The Sun: 'We quite commonly as humans put our car keys somewhere out of the ordinary and it takes longer for us to find them. 'As you get older, it takes longer for you to recall, or you really have to think; What was I doing? Where was I? What distracted me? Was it that I had to let the dog out? And then you find the keys by the back door. 'That process of retrieving the information is just a bit slower in people as they age. 'In dementia, someone may not be able to recall that information and what they did when they came into the house. 'What may also happen is they might put it somewhere it really doesn't belong. For example, rather than putting the milk back in the fridge, they put the kettle in the fridge.'
