'Grandpa Robbers' found guilty in Kardashian robbery by Paris court
A French court found the ringleader and seven other members who were involved in the armed robbery of Kim Kardashian guilty, but did not give them a prison sentence.
The chief judge, David De Pas, said that the defendants' ages and their health issues weighed on the court's decision to impose milder sentences. He added that the nine years between the robbery and the trial was also taken into account.
The 69-year-old ringleader Aomar Aït Khedache received the stiffest sentence, eight years imprisonment but five of those were suspended.
Three others got seven years, five of them suspended. Three more got prison sentences ranging from five to three years, mostly or completely suspended, and an eighth person was found guilty on a weapons charge and fined.
However, with the time already served in pretrial detention, none of the defendants will have to sit out a further prison sentence.
The court acquitted two of the 10 defendents.
Almost a decade ago, a group dubbed the "Grandpa Robbers", because of their age and long criminal histories, tied up the reality star at gunpoint and stole millions of dollars' worth of jewellery.
Kardashian flew to Paris earlier this month to testify. The reality star had been alone in her luxury residence during the 2016 Paris Fashion Week, and said she believed she would have been raped, killed and would never see her children again.
On Friday, Khedache asked for 'a thousand pardons,' communicated via a written note in court. Other defendants also used their final words to express remorse.
Kardashian's lawyer Franck Berton told the Associated Press that Kardashian forgave the ringleader.
'I do appreciate the letter, I forgive you,' she said. 'But it doesn't change the feelings and the trauma and the fact that my life was forever changed.'
Kardashian was not present for the verdict, but her lawyers said she had accepted the court's ruling.
The celebrity wrote in a statement afterwards that she was 'deeply grateful to the French authorities for pursuing justice in this case.'
The crime was the most terrifying experience of my life, leaving a lasting impact on me and my family. While I'll never forget what happened, I believe in the power of growth and accountability and pray for healing for all," she added.

An electric scooter is blamed for a violent fire that killed 4 in a French city
Four people were killed in an 'extremely violent' blaze seemingly caused by a battery-powered electric scooter that tore through a 10-story housing block in Reims, the capital of France's Champagne region, authorities said Saturday. A 13-year-old jumped to his death from the 4th floor apartment where the fire started in the early hours of Friday and a burned body found inside is believed to be that of his older brother, aged 15, said Reims prosecutor François Schneider. An 87-year-old woman and her 59-year-old son who lived on the 8th floor suffocated to death in the smoke, he said. Two people were seriously injured, including the dead boys' stepfather who was badly burned, and 26 others were treated in hospital for lighter injuries, he said. Schneider said there is 'no doubt' that the blaze was accidental, spreading quickly from the scooter that caught fire for reasons unknown. Battery fires 'are extremely difficult to extinguish' and fire officers battled the blaze for more than three hours, the prosecutor said.

Teenager arrested for armed robbery on Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus
A 15-year-old was taken into custody on Friday in connection with an armed robbery on a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus. According to information provided to KDKA-TV from PRT, the 15-year-old boy from Greenfield was one of four suspects who attempted to rob a woman on a bus in the South Side the morning of May 29. The incident took place near Sarah and South 26th streets just after 9 a.m. When the suspects tried to rob the woman, her husband intervened, and that's when one of the suspects pulled out a gun. The husband was able to wrestle the gun away and handed it to his wife as they left the bus. That gun was later recovered by police, and police later learned the Keystone Shooting Center in Butler County reported the gun had been stolen. After investigators looked at surveillance footage, they issued a "Be On the Lookout" to local police. Last week, the Pittsburgh Public Schools police chief contacted authorities after he recognized one of the suspects as a former student. That suspect was taken into custody without incident on Friday morning. He will be charged as an adult and is facing charges of robbery, conspiracy, receiving stolen property, carrying a firearm without a license, terroristic threats, and possession of a firearm by a minor. He is also facing three counts of reckless endangerment. Port Authority Police said that the investigation into the other suspects is ongoing.
