Around the Districts: Boherbue, Buttevant and Clondrohid
The Parishioners of Boherbue and Kiskeam Parish are presently in the process of bidding farewell to their Parish Priest for the past 21 years Rev Fr Jim Kennelly. The change will take place in conjunction with the Diocesan reshuffle in mid-July. He will be dearly missed of course for a number of reasons, each one with their own story to tell.
He was the first Cork native, a Millstreet man, to take the role of Parish Priest in the area.
Many years ago his neighbour Fr Bill Radley and the late Fr O'Sullivan from Ballydaly were Curates in the Parish. During his reign he endeared himself right throughout the Parish and even though the words of the song state that '21 years is a mighty long time' it literally flew.
Now, I'm not stating that we grew older quicker because of his presence, no not at all, but he was so easy to converse with and such a caring and helpful Priest that he will never be forgotten by this generation.
We thank him and we will pray that he will have a long and happy retirement at the family home in Millstreet and as its just around the corner there is no doubt he will be visiting and helping out if required.
When he first arrived in 2024 his Secretary Sheila O'Keeffe took up that role in the Parish and we too express our gratitude to her for all the help and additional duties, such as Mass booklets for special occasions etc., nothing was too much trouble.
I believe the new Parish Priest will be announced this weekend and we will too welcome him and help to try and make his stay a happy and peaceful one.
On Sunday last the Kiskeam side of the Parish held their Mass of Thanksgiving and Farewell to Fr Kennelly followed by refreshments in the Community Centre.
The Boherbue function takes place on Friday July 4th with Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception at 7.30pm followed by refreshments in the Pearse Memorial Hall where people will have the opportunity to chat with Fr Kennelly.
Organising Chairman Ned Vaughan is encouraging Clubs etc with crests to wear their colours or uniforms as a mark of appreciation to Fr Jim for his support and encouragement during his time here. For those wishing to drop in homebaking to the hall it will be open from 6pm onwards.

US, China to launch new talks on tariff truce extension, easing path for Trump-Xi meeting
By David Lawder STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Top U.S. and Chinese economic officials will resume talks in Stockholm on Monday to try to tackle longstanding economic disputes at the centre of a trade war between the world's top two economies, aiming to extend a truce by three months and keeping sharply higher tariffs at bay. China is facing an August 12 deadline to reach a durable tariff agreement with President Donald Trump's administration, after Beijing and Washington reached preliminary deals in May and June to end weeks of escalating tit-for-tat tariffs and a cut-off of rare earth minerals. Without an agreement, global supply chains could face renewed turmoil from U.S. duties snapping back to triple-digit levels that would amount to a bilateral trade embargo. The Stockholm talks come hot on the heels of Trump's biggest trade deal yet with the European Union on Sunday for a 15% tariff on most EU goods exports to the U.S., including autos. The bloc will also buy $750 billion worth of American energy and make $600 billion worth of U.S. investments in coming years. No similar breakthrough is expected in the U.S.-China talks but trade analysts said that another 90-day extension of a tariff and export control truce struck in mid-May was likely. An extension of that length would prevent further escalation and facilitate planning for a potential meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in late October or early November. A U.S. Treasury spokesperson declined comment on a South China Morning Post report quoting unnamed sources as saying the two sides would refrain from introducing new tariffs or other steps that could escalate the trade war for another 90 days. Trump's administration is poised to impose new sectoral tariffs that will impact China within weeks, including on semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, ship-to-shore cranes and other products. "We're very close to a deal with China. We really sort of made a deal with China, but we'll see how that goes," Trump told reporters on Sunday before European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen struck their tariff deal. DEEPER ISSUES Previous U.S.-China trade talks in Geneva and London in May and June focused on bringing U.S. and Chinese retaliatory tariffs down from triple-digit levels and restoring the flow of rare earth minerals halted by China and Nvidia's H20 AI chips and other goods halted by the United States. So far, the talks have not delved into broader economic issues. They include U.S. complaints that China's state-led, export-driven model is flooding world markets with cheap goods, and Beijing's complaints that U.S. national security export controls on tech goods seek to stunt Chinese growth. "Geneva and London were really just about trying to get the relationship back on track so that they could, at some point, actually negotiate about the issues which animate the disagreement between the countries in the first place," said Scott Kennedy, a China economics expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. "I'd be surprised if there is an early harvest on some of these things but an extension of the ceasefire for another 90 days seems to be the most likely outcome," Kennedy said. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has already flagged a deadline extension and has said he wants China to rebalance its economy away from exports to more domestic consumption -- a decades-long goal for U.S. policymakers. Analysts say the U.S.-China negotiations are far more complex than those with other Asian countries and will require more time. China's grip on the global market for rare earth minerals and magnets, used in everything from military hardware to car windshield wiper motors, has proved to be an effective leverage point on U.S. industries. TRUMP-XI MEETING? In the background of the talks is speculation about a possible meeting between Trump and Xi in late October. Trump has said he will decide soon on a landmark trip to China, and a new flare-up of tariffs and export controls would likely derail planning. Sun Chenghao, a fellow at Tsinghua University's Center for International Security and Strategy in Beijing, said that a Trump-Xi summit would be an opportunity for the U.S. to lower the 20% tariffs on Chinese goods related to fentanyl. In exchange, he said the Chinese side could make good on its 2020 pledge to increase purchases of U.S. farm products and other goods. "The future prospect of the heads of state summit is very beneficial to the negotiations because everyone wants to reach an agreement or pave the way in advance," Sun said. Still, China will likely request a reduction of multi-layered U.S. tariffs totaling 55% on most goods and further easing of U.S. high-tech export controls, analysts said. Beijing has argued that such purchases would help reduce the U.S. trade deficit with China, which reached $295.5 billion in 2024.

AFL world sends flood of messages over news about Collingwood hero and partner
Jordan De Goey has endured a frustrating year with injuries, but the Collingwood premiership player has double the cause for celebration after some good news - on and off the field. De Goey and partner Aisha Jade McKinnon took to social media over the weekend to share the lovely news that they're expecting a baby girl. McKinnon posted a photo of her bump and video of the ultrasound, while also sharing footage of the lovely moment they found out she's expecting. "In the midst of our changing lives we were blessed with the greatest surprise of them all, baby girl coming soon," she wrote. The happy news sparked a flood of congratulatory messages, with Collingwood teammate Isaac Quaynor writing: "Congrats guys." Josh Daicos' partner Annalise Dalins wrote: "The best news!! Congratulations you two! Sending so much love." TV presenter Abbie Gelmie commented: "Oh honey, congratulations." While fellow Collingwood players Mason Cox and Oleg Markov also sent their well-wishes. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Aisha Jade (@aisha_jade) Baby joy and return to field for Jordan De Goey De Goey hasn't played at AFL level since May due to an Achilles issue, which was compounded when he suffered a concussion at training two weeks ago. But he made his long-awaited return alongside Bobby Hill in the VFL on Saturday, and got through unscathed. Speaking on Sunday after Collingwood's win over Richmond in the AFL, coach Craig McRae wasn't willing to put a timeline on their potential return to the top level. Fellow premiership-player Hill had missed several weeks due to personal issues. 'I'm not sure, we'll wait and see,' McRae said. 'It's about continuous training now having missed so much footy. I don't want to make a big statement but I did like some of the stuff we saw. He's a handy player to get back this time of year, isn't he?' Nick Daicos tipped to make Brownlow Medal history The Pies ended a two-match losing skid with a hard-fought 36-point win over the Tigers, in which Nick Daicos almost-certainly polled another three Brownlow votes. He tallied 42 disposals - one short of the personal best he set a week earlier - to go with three goals, 14 score involvements and 884 metres gained. Speaking on SEN radio on Monday, Kane Cornes tipped Daicos to eventually smash the record for most Brownlow votes in a career held by Gary Ablett (262). Daicos polled 38 votes in 2024, which would have broken the previous record for a single season if not for Patrick Cripps' staggering haul of 45. But Cornes reckons Daicos will go one better in 2025 and eventually wind up with the most Brownlow votes in total. "He might get that Brownlow this year after all," Cornes said. 'There's no one better running inside forward 50 taking a shot at goal than him. Gary Ablett Jr has the most Brownlow votes ever with 262. Nick Daicos will break that by a mile. He will end up being the most voted for player.' RELATED: Max Gawn comes clean after Demons' diabolical late mistake Brendan Fevola blocked from joining Collingwood due to refusal David King added: 'We all think he's in front, but there are still a couple of others there, Jordan Dawson and Noah Anderson, I think, are his biggest rivals. We haven't seen Nick use the ball as well as he used it on the weekend. He's been able to get a stack of ball, but his damage for some reason has been off for the bulk of the season. What a time to gather it at Round 20. 'It's a perfect time to have him just find this sort of form. Is there a guy that you just 'put your glasses down' more regularly when he's running inside 50 (to kick at goal)? You just go, 'Yep, that's going to go through'.'

The Kansas City Royals and pitcher Seth Lugo agree to 2-year extension, AP source says
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals and right-hander Seth Lugo have agreed to a two-year extension that includes a vesting option for the 2028 season, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Sunday night. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal, which presumably takes one of the most talked-about names on the trade market off the table ahead of this week's deadline, had not been officially announced. The 35-year-old Lugo made his first All-Star Game and won his first Gold Glove last season, when he went 16-9 with a 3.00 ERA in the first year of a two-year, $30 million deal that included a player option for next season. Lugo has followed that up with an even better start to this season, going 7-5 with a 2.95 ERA through 19 outings for Kansas City. Rumors surfaced of several contenders interested in trading for Lugo ahead of Thursday's deadline, and the fact that the Royals have been hanging on the fringe of contention themselves left many wondering whether they would be buyers or sellers. It appears that they are going to make a push for a second consecutive playoff appearance. The Royals acquired outfielder Randal Grichuk from the Diamondbacks for reliever Andrew Hoffmann late Saturday, shoring up a weakness in the lineup by adding a right-handed bat. Now, they have indicated that Lugo remains big a part of their future with his extension — an especially timely one given it came the same day that All-Star pitcher Kris Bubic went on the injured list. Kansas City also is missing starters Cole Ragans and Michael Lorenzen due to injuries. Both are expected back at some point in August, and the Royals are hopeful that their return to the rotation will propel them down the stretch run. After beating the Guardians on Sunday, the Royals were four games back of the final American League wild-card spot. ___ AP MLB: Dave Skretta, The Associated Press
