2.7 km long continuous tunnel completed with first breakthrough in 21 km tunnel between BKC and Shilphata

Shilphata (Maharashtra) [India] July 11 (ANI): On July 9, the first breakthrough was achieved in the 21 km long tunnel being constructed between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilphata in Maharashtra, marking the successful completion of a 2.7 km continuous tunnel section. Out of the total 21 km tunnel, 5 km is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) between Shilphata and Ghansoli, while the remaining 16 km will be built using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The tunnel also includes a 7 km long undersea section beneath Thane Creek. To expedite tunnelling in the NATM portion, an Additionally Driven Intermediate Tunnel (ADIT) was constructed, allowing simultaneous excavation towards Ghansoli and Shilphata sides. So far, about 1.62 km has been excavated from the Shilphata side, and the total progress in the NATM section stands at approximately 4.3 km. Comprehensive safety measures have been implemented at the site, including ground settlement markers, piezometers, inclinometers, strain gauges, and biometric access control systems to ensure safe and controlled tunnelling activities without disturbing nearby structures. The work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed bullet train project is going on in full swing in Maharashtra, with major structural and tunnelling milestones being achieved, according to the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) said on Saturday. According to the NHSRCL, work on all three elevated stations in the state, Thane, Virar, and Boisar, is advancing swiftly, and the first slabs for Virar and Boisar stations have recently been cast. Across the alignment, pier foundations and pier works are underway at various locations, with approximately 44 km of piers cast to date. In the Palghar district, viaduct construction has also commenced using full-span box girder launching technology, starting from the Dahanu area. Additionally, the excavation of seven mountain tunnels in the Palghar district is actively in progress, demonstrating the project's engineering scale and complexity. Bridge construction has also kicked off at three major rivers: Vaitarna, Ulhas, and Jagani, further contributing to the corridor's critical infrastructure. An important component of the project is the 21-kilometre-long underground and undersea tunnel connecting the Mumbai Bullet Train station at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Shilphata. Of the 21 km tunnel, 16 km is being excavated using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), while 5 km is being executed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). The tunnel includes a 7 km undersea stretch beneath Thane Creek, marking a significant feat in Indian tunnelling history. So far, approximately 4.1 km of tunnel heading has been achieved through NATM from the Shilphata site, and two concurrent faces have been developed from the ADIT portal. In terms of vertical construction, base slab casting at the Vikhroli shaft (56 meters deep) and Sawli shaft (39 meters deep) has been completed. Additionally, sludge treatment plants are being installed at shaft locations, and the Mahape tunnel lining casting yard is actively producing tunnel lining segments. For the under-construction Mumbai Bullet Train station at Bandra Kurla Complex, 80% of the excavation work has been completed. Base slab casting at 100 ft below ground level has already started at both ends of the station site, NHSRCL added. (ANI)

"The 21-kilometre tunnel will be a key part of the high-speed rail corridor, with 16 km being constructed using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), and the remaining 5 km through the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), especially between Shilphata and Ghansoli. Significantly, the tunnel also features a 7 km undersea section beneath Thane Creek," it said. Rev Fr Jim Kennelly The Parishioners of Boherbue and Kiskeam Parish are presently in the process of bidding farewell to their Parish Priest for the past 21 years Rev Fr Jim Kennelly. The change will take place in conjunction with the Diocesan reshuffle in mid-July. He will be dearly missed of course for a number of reasons, each one with their own story to tell. He was the first Cork native, a Millstreet man, to take the role of Parish Priest in the area. Many years ago his neighbour Fr Bill Radley and the late Fr O'Sullivan from Ballydaly were Curates in the Parish. During his reign he endeared himself right throughout the Parish and even though the words of the song state that '21 years is a mighty long time' it literally flew. Now, I'm not stating that we grew older quicker because of his presence, no not at all, but he was so easy to converse with and such a caring and helpful Priest that he will never be forgotten by this generation. We thank him and we will pray that he will have a long and happy retirement at the family home in Millstreet and as its just around the corner there is no doubt he will be visiting and helping out if required. When he first arrived in 2024 his Secretary Sheila O'Keeffe took up that role in the Parish and we too express our gratitude to her for all the help and additional duties, such as Mass booklets for special occasions etc., nothing was too much trouble. I believe the new Parish Priest will be announced this weekend and we will too welcome him and help to try and make his stay a happy and peaceful one. On Sunday last the Kiskeam side of the Parish held their Mass of Thanksgiving and Farewell to Fr Kennelly followed by refreshments in the Community Centre. The Boherbue function takes place on Friday July 4th with Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception at 7.30pm followed by refreshments in the Pearse Memorial Hall where people will have the opportunity to chat with Fr Kennelly. Organising Chairman Ned Vaughan is encouraging Clubs etc with crests to wear their colours or uniforms as a mark of appreciation to Fr Jim for his support and encouragement during his time here. 70% degree seats remain unfilled after 2nd phase DOST counselling

Hyderabad: Not even 30% of the 3.71 lakh degree seats in the state have been filled after the second phase of Degree Online Services, Telangana (DOST). According to the details released by the Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) on Friday, 43,568 students were allotted seats in the second phase of counselling. Of these, 6,077 had got seats in the first phase but participated again in the counselling to secure a seat in a better college. In the first phase, 60,436 students were allotted seats. "There is hardly any demand for degree courses. Maybe, if DOST counselling was held after EAPCET and after release of Intermediate supplementary results, a few more seats would be filled," said Y Ramakrishna, secretary, Telangana Degree College Managements Association. He said that there were way too many seats in undergraduate courses in degree colleges across the state. He also advocated stringent eligibility criteria for professional courses such as engineering to ensure students don't opt for them as the default choice irrespective of their capability to study. Also, while there are 3.71 lakh degree seats, only 2.85 lakh students cleared Intermediate this year, with most going for professional courses. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo Despite poor demand, colleges do not apply for course closure or reduction of seats as they will have to seek approvals again if they want to offer certain courses in the future. In Telangana, there are 805 degree colleges under DOST which offer 457 courses. TGCHE officials said they would be opening up degree courses to non-local students after the third phase of counselling. "We went ahead with DOST counselling as there are students who want to join only degree courses. We did not want to keep them waiting. If needed, we will have special phase counselling for supplementary students and those waiting for EAPCET," said V Balakista Reddy, DOST convenor and chairman, TGCHE. He said they were trying to reform degree education by updating the syllabus and introducing skill-based courses, but it would take a few years to see the results.
