BANGKOK (The Nation Thailand/ANN): "Asean reaffirms its stance, uniting to tackle global economic challenges and seize US tariff relief for constructive talks."
Thailand's Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan said this on Sunday following his participation in the Asean Ministerial Caucus, held alongside the APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting in Jeju, South Korea.
He was joined by economic ministers from Asean member states within APEC, including Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Brunei.
Pichai explained that the meeting had discussed the volatile global economic landscape, exchanging strategies for regional trade cooperation and strengthening relations with the United States amid global economic uncertainties.
"Asean also reaffirms its collective commitment to supporting an open, fair and rules-based free trade system, while urging the avoidance of protectionist measures," he stated.
"Asean also sees the 90-day suspension of US tariff measures as an opportunity to initiate constructive negotiations to resolve trade disputes."
Pichai further elaborated that Asean ministers agreed that regional unity and a timely response to global economic fluctuations are crucial factors in maintaining Asean's prominent role on the global stage.
The bloc will accelerate proactive cooperation, such as modernising the Asean Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) to align with the contemporary economic landscape while emphasising the importance of a multilateral trade system in ensuring long-term economic stability.
Pichai also highlighted Thai government's commitment to maintaining domestic economic stability while supporting businesses affected by international developments, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are considered vulnerable.
The government has introduced short- and long-term measures such as low-interest loans, knowledge development programmes, and export market expansion under free trade agreements (FTAs), with a particular focus on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
Currently, Asean is the world's fifth-largest economic bloc, with a population of approximately 680 million people (8.5% of the global population) and a combined nominal GDP of around US$3.9 trillion (129.31 trillion baht). - The Nation Thailand/ANN

EPB cautiously optimistic of near-term prospects

KUALA LUMPUR: EPB Group Bhd remains cautiously optimistic on its near-term outlook, despite global trade uncertainties and input cost pressures. The group said its confidence is underpinned by a strong balance sheet, an expanding market presence and a clear execution strategy. 'The favourable Asean trade environment, supported by targeted fiscal and monetary policies across key markets, continues to present compelling opportunities for EPB in the food manufacturing and packaging solutions sector,' the one-stop food processing and packaging machinery solutions provider said. In the second quarter ended June 30, EPB posted a slightly higher net profit of RM2.6mil, or 0.70 sen per share, raising first-half (1H25) net profit by 35.2% to RM5.2mil, or 1.40 sen per share. Quarterly revenue jumped 40.2% to RM29.6mil, lifting 1H25 revenue 45% to RM56.9mil. As at July 31, EPB's order book stood at RM81.25mil, of which RM51.65mil is expected to be fulfilled in the second half of the financial year ending Dec 31, 2025 (FY25), and RM29.6mil in 1H26. Notably, over RM70.08mil of the current order book relates to the group's core food processing and packaging machinery segment, reaffirming its dominant contribution to EPB's revenue base. 'Our healthy order pipeline and improved project execution capabilities provide a solid foundation for the remainder of FY25. 'With favourable regional trade conditions and sustained investments in automation, we remain confident in our ability to expand our market share and deliver long-term value,' managing director Yeoh Chee Min said

Cambodian soldier in landmine planting video identified as same from joint patrols

PHNOM PENH: A recent post by the Cambodian media outlet Fresh News International on Facebook claimed that Thailand had staged photos and videos of landmine planting to falsely accuse Cambodia. The post suggested that ethnic Thai Cambodians from Surin, fluent in Khmer, were dressed in Cambodian military uniforms and used equipment easily available in Thai markets. However, a Facebook page called "RTA Trend" posted a photo of a Cambodian soldier featured in both the photo and the landmine planting video, with the caption: "Trust no one standing so close! New evidence proves Thailand didn't stage it! Maly... Look here! Photos of Thai and Cambodian soldiers who once patrolled together – it's the same person in both the photo and the video!" - Photo: The Nation/ANN Additionally, the page further criticised the use of traps, stating: "Brutal and underhanded, a spike trap is a device used to capture animals or people, made from sharp wood or metal. It is set in a hole in the ground and camouflaged with wooden grids and leaves.' 'Found in the Phu Makua area, it clearly implicates Cambodia. This trap poses a significant risk to civilians, violating international humanitarian law and breaching the Geneva Conventions and the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) (Protocol II).' - The Nation/ANN

Ringgit Rises Against Major Currencies, Eases Vs US Dollar

WORLD By Zufazlin Baharuddin KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The ringgit appreciated against most major currencies but eased slightly against the greenback at the close on Wednesday amid cautious market sentiments ahead of the release of the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes later tonight. At 6 pm, the local note dipped to 4.2250/2290 against the US dollar from yesterday's close of 4.2215/2255. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that apart from the minutes, comments by senior US central bank officials will also come into focus after the release of the FOMC details. 'Markets are anxious about whether the US Federal Reserve (Fed) will deliver a 25 basis points interest rate cut in the upcoming FOMC meeting,' he told Bernama. Afzanizam said last week's US consumer price index and producer price index dynamics suggested that the Fed might continue to focus on inflation, but noted that the weak labour market warranted additional monetary stimulus. In addition, the market sentiment will stay guarded ahead of policy signals from the Fed's Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium later this week. At the close, the ringgit settled mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. It gained versus the euro to 4.9196/9242 from 4.9307/9354 yesterday and inched up against the British pound to 5.7033/7087 from 5.7066/7120, but dropped vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8648/8677 from 2.8572/8601. The ringgit also traded mostly higher against other ASEAN currencies. It gained versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2864/2898 from 3.2901/2935 at Tuesday's close, strengthened against the Thai baht to 12.9756/9935 from 12.9848/13.0027 and inched up vis-à-vis the Indonesian rupiah to 259.6/260.0 from 259.8/260.2. However, it slid against the Philippine peso to 7.41/7.42 from 7.39/7.40 yesterday.
