Daily Record20-05-2025

If you're after a city best explored step by step, two destinations in Scotland have made their mark on the global stage. Our two biggest settlements have been named among the best in the world when it comes to walkability.
Edinburgh and Glasgow have been included in a top 100 global list by travel platform GuruWalk, thanks to their architecture, culture, and interesting and historical routes.
When it comes to exploring a city, nothing beats discovering it on foot. While open-top bus tours have their charm, the real magic lies in wandering down side streets, past hidden gems and through centuries of history that vehicles can't reach.
Walking not only gives you a closer look but keeps your step count high and your wallet happy.
Travel platform GuruWalk, which connects tourists with local guides offering free walking tours, compiled the list from March 2024 to April 2025, based on page views and booking trends across its global platform.
Edinburgh maintained its impressive 19th-place finish from last year, thanks to its captivating mix of history, architecture and atmosphere.
GuruWalk said: 'Edinburgh enchants with its blend of medieval architecture and contemporary atmosphere. From the Castle to the Royal Mile, the city invites you to explore it at a leisurely pace. Every corner here feels magical!'
Visitors to the capital can take part in free themed walks, including ghosts and mysteries of the Royal Mile, a Mary Queen of Scots tour, a Harry Potter-themed route and even a Trainspotting-inspired walk through Leith.
Further down the list, Glasgow secured 91st place, continuing to charm with its cultural buzz and striking architecture. GuruWalk said: 'Glasgow is renowned for its lively arts, music and cultural scene.
"Strolling through its streets means discovering impressive Victorian buildings, contemporary galleries and an ever-changing culinary scene that reflects its young and dynamic spirit.'
Guided walks in the city include tours along the River Clyde, the old Tollbooth, Buchanan Street, Glasgow Cathedral, and routes exploring the city's darker secrets.
London also made the cut, with GuruWalk praising its mix of past and present. They said: 'With an unrivalled combination of history and modernity, London fascinates travellers from all over the world with places such as Buckingham Palace, Camden Town and Soho, which are ideal for exploring at a leisurely pace on foot.'
Topping the list this year was Rome, followed closely by Budapest and Madrid. GuruWalk said: 'Rome tops this ranking once again. The Eternal City remains a key destination for travellers fascinated by ancient history.

"The Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Baroque squares make Rome an open-air museum that deserves to be explored thoroughly, step by step.'
On Budapest, they added: 'Known as the 'Pearl of the Danube', Budapest blends imperial architecture with a vibrant cultural scene. The Parliament, the Fisherman's Bastion and the thermal baths are some of the best places to discover on foot.'
And about Madrid, they wrote: 'The Spanish capital offers the perfect combination of art, urban life and iconic parks. Strolling through its streets from the Plaza Mayor to the Retiro is like diving into a lively city full of surprises.'

More info The latest snapshot of Greg Monks has surfaced, as efforts to locate the missing Scotsman intensify in the popular Portuguese getaway of Albufeira. The 38 year old from Cambuslang, just outside Glasgow, disappeared in the Algarve on Tuesday night, shortly after touching down for a holiday with mates in the sun-drenched spot. This final photo captured before his disappearance has been circulated online in hopes it will aid in the search. The image was uploaded to a dedicated Facebook group rallying support for finding him. The photo depicts him sporting dark blue Nike shorts and a matching brand top, providing those searching for him and his family with additional clues. Originally, it was believed that there were no photos of Greg from the night he went missing, with his sister previously stating there was uncertainty about what he had worn, reports the Daily Record. Posted on the Missing Person Greg Monks - Albufeira, Portugal Facebook page, the picture includes the caption: "This is Greg on the night he went missing, he had on navy Nike shorts and T-shirt." The social media post was shared by more than 800 individuals all keen to see him reunited with his friends and back in contact with his family. Scores of hopeful comments have poured in, with folks expressing their hopes for his safe return, bolstered by CCTV sightings of him. Greg, who was enjoying a stag do with mates before taking on usher duties at a friend's wedding, sparked a massive search when he vanished after leaving the lively strip to return to the group's apartments. Since then, there's been no sign of him and his anxious family are in Albufeira, frantically searching for any clues about his location. Portuguese search teams have informed the family that Greg was last captured on CCTV about four miles from his apartment and the strip, in the more tranquil residential area of Cerro de Águia. His sister Jillian Monks has spoken of the weary search party, which includes Greg's mum, dad, cousin, and girlfriend Nicole, as they comb through the Algarve feeling utterly numb. (Image: Facebook) Jillian, 36, stuck in Glasgow with her two wee ones, is doing all she can to spread appeals and connect with locals via social media. In a chat with the Record, she expressed: "This is every family's worst nightmare. We have never known pain like this. It is just horrendous. We are all trying to keep positive but we know how out of character this is for Greg. "We know if he could contact us he would. We're all just numb and we're praying he's safe. We are all worried sick for him." She also recounted how the stag do swiftly got underway after checking into the Novochoro Apartments. They later went out, believed to have visited King's Cross karaoke bar within Albufeira's nightlife district, before Greg lost touch with his mates. Jillian shared: "His girlfriend, Nicole, is over in Albufeira, she checked through his case to see what was missing. We think he might have had a navy blue Nike shorts and top set on. "She's absolutely devastated right now, she just wants him back." Jillian revealed that Greg's mates were left "devastated and shocked" upon realising he hadn't come back to their accommodation. After 12 hours with no sign of him, they got in touch with the authorities. She explained: "The group had only been there for a matter of hours. They checked in and were only in the apartment for 20 minutes before heading out again. "They are all devastated and shocked by what has happened. They spent the rest of the time there searching for him and trying to help. They have all returned home today, Greg should be back home with them." Jillian mentioned that the family are keeping up regular contact with the local police who have informed the national police force in Portugal. However, she says the family haven't yet seen any evidence that Greg was spotted in Cerro de Águia and are urging the police to show them the CCTV footage.

The Strand originally opened in 1896 and is now the only remaining riverside tidal saltwater pool in the country. Last year it was officially recognised as being 'historically significant' after gaining membership to Historic Pools of Britain. Advertisement Speaking previously, Councillor Nina Gurung, Medway Council's portfolio holder for heritage, culture and leisure, said: "We are proud to have invested in this exciting project to improve the already great offering and add a brand-new fun feature for our children and families to enjoy both this summer and for years to come." To access the pools, sessions need to be booked online. Historic 'on-of-a-kind' lido has three heated swimming pools Adult admission costs £7.20, whilst it costs £4.75 for juniors and seniors. According to Clare Short, from Historic Pools of Britain, The Strand Lido is a "pool that epitomises the spirit of lidos as a place for fun and wellbeing, which it has been providing to its community and visitors for over 120 years, and that is historically significant as the only remaining riverside tidal saltwater pool in the country." After heading to the lido last year, one visitor said: "[Strand Lido] felt a bit like being on holiday and the kids loved it. "We played in the lovely park after and done the little train ride - kids enjoyed that. 5 The pool is Medway's only open air swimming pool or lido Credit: instagram/@medwaysport Advertisement "The fair was on too. A seafront English lido named one of the best in Europe has also reopened with £4.5million revamp to be unveiled in weeks.
