Edinburgh and Glasgow have been included in a top 100 global list by travel platform GuruWalk, thanks to their architecture, culture, and interesting and historical routes.

Walking not only gives you a closer look but keeps your step count high and your wallet happy.
Travel platform GuruWalk, which connects tourists with local guides offering free walking tours, compiled the list from March 2024 to April 2025, based on page views and booking trends across its global platform.

They said: 'With an unrivalled combination of history and modernity, London fascinates travellers from all over the world with places such as Buckingham Palace, Camden Town and Soho, which are ideal for exploring at a leisurely pace on foot.'

Scottish city with 'family friendly attractions' named among UK's 'best base' for roadtrips
The Scottish city beat cities like London and Manchester due to its access to highland and low traffic. Glasgow has been ranked the best Scottish city for family road trips, according to a new nationwide study just as the school summer holidays hit their peak. The research, carried out by Indigo Car Hire, placed Glasgow second overall in the UK, with only Bristol ahead. The ranking considered factors such as the number of scenic drives accessible from major cities, levels of traffic congestion, and the availability of family-friendly attractions nearby. Scoring 72.6 out of 100, Glasgow outperformed other major cities including Birmingham, London, and Manchester, thanks to its proximity to the Highlands and strong traffic and tourism metrics. Cherie Carter, Director at Indigo Car Hire, said: 'Our new UK Family Road Trip Index shows that Glasgow has raced into second spot as Britain's best city for family road trips this summer, scoring an impressive 72.6 percent out of 100. 'With stunning scenic drives on its doorstep, lighter traffic than London or Manchester, and plenty of family -friendly attractions, it's the perfect launchpad for August adventures. 'While big cities like London still shine with sheer choice, families looking to escape the jams may find Glasgow the real holiday winner for a base this year.' Glasgow earned praise for its relatively low traffic score of 124.3, the second lowest across all UK cities surveyed. Families setting off from the city can easily reach a wide range of outdoor destinations and attractions within an hour's drive, from tranquil lochs to adventure parks and historic castles. Among the most popular routes is the A82 to Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, one of the most scenic and accessible day trips from the city. The journey winds past hills and glens, with the chance to stop in the picturesque village of Luss, enjoy a picnic by the loch, or even venture out on a boat. Those willing to go further afield can drive north to the Isle of Skye, passing through dramatic landscapes including Glencoe and Fort William before reaching the island via the Skye Bridge. The five-hour drive is a favourite for those craving wild scenery and unforgettable views. For a coastal option, the journey to Oban offers another popular route. Travelling west along the A82 and A85, drivers pass Loch Awe and the ruins of Kilchurn Castle before arriving at the harbour town, known as the 'Gateway to the Isles'. The Scottish village with nearby castle hosting 'thrilling' family fair this weekend
For many people in Scotland, August is dominated by the Edinburgh Fringe. While the legendary arts festival is well worth visiting the capital for, there is lots else going on around the country that is worth checking out this month. For the Daily Record's latest Village of the Week, we have chosen a charming little settlement near a castle that is hosting an incredible festival this weekend. Thornhill is a small village in Dumfries and Galloway that is known for its wide streets and opulent Victorian villas. Just a few miles out of the village is Drumlanrig Castle and Gardens, which are situated on the 90,000 acre Queensberry Estate and date back to the 17th century. While the castle is worth a visit any time of year, this weekend it is hosting the Galloway Country Fair. Taking place on August 9 and August 10, the annual fair is a weekend event that celebrates countryside and family life. Each year, it transforms the tranquil grounds of Drumlanrig Castle into a bustling hub of rural fun and "thrilling entertainment" for the entire family. Headlining the action this year is the Stannage Stunt Team, who will perform jaw-dropping motorcycle and fire stunts. Meanwhile, OG Performance Jousting will put on an adrenaline-filled display of medieval skill. In terms of what's on exclusively for little ones, The Kids' Zone is jam-packed with activities such as free mini quads, bouncy castles, and laser quest. For a small fee, children can even enjoy bumper cars, a bungee trampoline, and a giant inflatable fun course. There will be plenty to enjoy when it comes to food and drink at the Galloway Country Fair too. There will be lots of stalls selling everything from artisan hot dogs to fish and chips, as well as donuts, crepes, and ice cream. Meanwhile, Thornhill is well worth exploring all on its own—with a number of shops and cafés dotted around its High Street. The village is also home to the Drumlanrig Cafe restaurant, where you can enjoy a proper meal. Read on for some images that show why Gairloch is worth a visit this August. Meanwhile, more information about the Galloway Country Fair can be found on the Drumlanrig Castle website. Beautiful UK resort dubbed the 'Queen of seaside towns' during summer
A picturesque British seaside resort has it all - from a stunning bay and pristine beaches to a charming town filled with independent shops, and a history dating back to the Iron Age Boasting a broad bay, shimmering turquoise waters, a rich history tracing back to the Iron Age, and a town brimming with delightful independent shops, this coastal resort has plenty to offer. Nestled on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, Swanage caters to all tastes, whether you fancy sunning yourself on Swanage Beach, trekking along the Jurassic Coast, perusing local art galleries, savouring fresh seafood at quayside cafés, or enjoying a traditional Punch and Judy show right on the beach. Swanage perfectly blends age-old tradition with relaxed coastal allure. Its Victorian pier, heritage railway, and plethora of listed buildings lend the town an unmatched charm, while the bay and beach are undoubtedly among Swanage's most prized assets. It comes after reports of a small fishing village with some of the UK's best seafood but hardly any tourists. In 2024, for the 23rd consecutive year, Swanage Beach was honoured with both the Blue Flag and Seaside Award, a testament to its golden sands, pristine environment, and crystal-clear water, reports the Express. The dramatic chalk formations of Old Harry Rocks, marking the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast, provide awe-inspiring views over the sea. Whether you choose to reach them by hiking the picturesque coastal path from Swanage or embarking on a boat trip from the bay, a visit to Old Harry Rocks is an unforgettable experience and an absolute must for any first-time visitor to the area. Swanage, once a humble port and quarry town, has blossomed into a seaside gem, hailed by The Telegraph as the "queen of seaside resorts". It boasts a plethora of activities, steeped in history and natural allure. One visitor couldn't help but sing Swanage's praises on TripAdvisor, highlighting its "all independent" shops. They commented: "Lovely beach. Nice and clean and a sea to die for. Perfect for everyone as it's a shallow walk into a very clear and calm sea. It's a bit busier near the town where the shops, bars/pubs, cafes and restaurants are." Adding: "The town is super. Spoilt for choice of shops to eat or drink and buy something from. Best bit is it's ALL independent shops, bars and cafes and NO branded names." Another traveller captivated by Swanage's charm, noted: "So many beautiful sites in and around Swanage, historical, thatched villages, the splendid ruins of Corfe Castle, and gorgeous sunsets over the bay." Another TripAdvisor enthusiast also shared their experience of Old Harry Rocks: "Beautiful natural feature that was relatively tourist-free. The one-mile walk from the National Trust car park was very pretty along a cleared footpath through ferns, trees and shrubs." They added: "There's a flowering meadow on the cliffs overlooking Old Harry with views across to Bournemouth. There's a cafe and pub close to the National Trust car park. Loved this walk!!"
