Khalil Shakir injury update: How ankle sprain impacts Bills WR depth chart
Coach Sean McDermott told reporters at Sunday's practice Khalil Shakir would be "week-to-week" after suffering a high-ankle sprain.
Shakir was Buffalo's top receiver during the 2024 NFL season, leading the team in targets (100), catches (76) and receiving yards (821) while tying for second on the team with four touchdown receptions. The slot-man built a strong rapport with Josh Allen and is expected to once again be a key weapon for the reigning NFL MVP.

Shakir's injury occurred at Buffalo's Blue and Red practice Friday, per the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.
Shakir suffered an apparent injury and walked off the field with trainers. He had his right leg evaluated on the bench before trainers accompanied him up the tunnel. He did not return to practice.
The Bills were off on Saturday before returning to practice Sunday. At that point, McDermott announced Shakir would be "week-to-week" because of a high-ankle sprain.
How long will Khalil Shakir be out?
McDermott didn't provide a concrete timeline for Shakir's return, but CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz reports the 25-year-old receiver is expected to miss 4-5 weeks because of the injury. That makes his status for Buffalo's season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, Sept. 7 worth monitoring.

Shakir plays primarily in the slot – 498 of his 735 snaps (67.8%) last season came at the position – so either Curtis Samuel or free-agent signee Elijah Moore would figure to take over for Shakir in that role should he miss time. Samuel played in the slot on 43.1% of his snaps with the Bills last season while Moore did so on 54.6% of his snaps with the Cleveland Browns.

Why former Georgia RB is in contract dispute with the Buffalo Bills
Former Georgia Bulldog running back James Cook is looking for an extension with the Buffalo Bills. Unfortunately, the extension talks have sputtered to the point where there's been speculation that Cook might be "holding in" as a non-participant in practices, according to Rory Parks of TradeRumors. Cook is entering the final year of his rookie contract with the Buffalo Bills and wants a new deal. There have been many instances of players holding out or holding in until they earn a new contract, but when he reported to the first training camp practice on July 24, it gave indication that Cook would practice. That changed on Aug. 3. Cook was a non-participant on Sunday's practice, and when asked about why by ESPN's Alaina Getzenberg, he said "business". He kept repeating it on follow-up questions too. General manager Brandon Beane didn't see Cook's hold-in coming. "Yeah, you know, it's not something we were fully aware of until shortly before practice," Beane said, via The Buffalo News. "So, I get it, I understand it; it's the world we're in, I guess, of how players want to respond and things like that. "So, you know, at the end of the day, I wish we weren't here," Bean said. "This is my ninth season here, we've never had a player miss due to a contract or anything like that, so that's disappointing for me." Cook's has an asking price of at least $15M per year, he publicly announced via his Instagram. That would tie him with Derrick Henry for the third-highest average annual value among all NFL running backs. The Bills have already reached long-term deals with quarterback Josh Allen, wide receiver Khalil Shakir, cornerback Christian Benford, edge rusher Gregory Rousseau, and linebacker Terrel Bernard, so they could be looking to save a little on Cook's extension. Cook wants to be paid what he believes he's worth. He's arguably the second-most important player in the Bills' offense behind quarterback Josh Allen. In the regular season, Cook recorded 1,009 rushing yards, 16 rushing touchdowns and caught 32 passes. In the playoffs, Cook posted over 300 total yards and three touchdowns as he helped the Bills advance to the AFC championship game. He has blossomed at the NFL level, but not every NFL team values the running back position. Before he became a two-time Pro Bowl running back with the Bills, Cook played for four seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs, racking up 1,503 yards and 14 touchdowns on 230 carries. He even caught 67 passes for 730 yards and 6 touchdowns. His elusive, versatile running style fit in perfectly with the bruising, hard-hitting running style of Zamir White, and it was on full display when both of them rushed for a combined 165 yards on 19 carries against Alabama to win the 2021 national championship. Should the Nets still keep tabs on Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo?
The Brooklyn Nets have made it clear since last offseason that they are trying to rebuild the franchise through the draft, as evidenced by their five picks in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft. Brooklyn would presumably like to improve on its 26-56 record from the 2024-25 season so there is a possibility that general manager Sean Marks could keep his options open. While Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is more likely to remain in Milwaukee than he is to request a trade this offseason, there is some reporting that could give other teams reason to continue monitoring Antetokounmpo's status. "Sources tell me there's still nothing set in stone about whether Giannis Antetokounmpo will stay in Milwaukee or whether he will be leaving," ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Monday. The Bucks have made various moves to surround Antetokounmpo with the best team possible given the circumstances, but Charania's report could indicate that the "Greek Freak" isn't quite sold as of yet. With that being said, there is still a possibility that Antetokounmpo is dealt before the beginning of the 2025-26 campaign so let's take a look at what the Nets could do to potentially bring him to Brooklyn (h/t B/R's Grant Hughes): The Mock Trade Nets Receive: Giannis Antetokounmpo. Bucks Receive: forward Michael Porter Jr., 2027 first-round pick (top-1 protected), 2027 first-round pick (via NYK), 2029 first-round pick (top-1 protected), 2029 first-round pick (via HOU), 2031 first-round pick (top-1 protected). Reason For/Against The Nets Doing This Trade Over the past couple of years, it has been made clear through a myriad of reports that the Nets are fond of Antetokounmpo and seemed to prefer trading for him as opposed to other players considered to be less than untouchable. Brian Lewis of the New York Post reported during the 2024-25 season that Brooklyn was still interested in Antetokounmpo so the latest reporting could potentially reinvigorate that interest. The argument for trading for Antetokounmpo is simple: the Nets would be getting one of the best players in the league and is still just 30 years old. Antetokounmpo would be far and away Brooklyn's best player heading into next season if this trade went through and he would still have players like Nic Claxton, Cam Thomas (assuming he re-signs), and Egor Demin to share the floor with. The argument for passing on trading for Antetokounmpo is also understandable given that the Nets would be giving up their own first-round picks in 2027, 2029, and 2031 as long as those picks aren't first overall. It's hard to see a team like the Bucks do this trade with any kind of protections on the picks especially since Antetokounmpo is still in MVP-level form and you wouldn't give up Antetokounmpo while not being able to draft the best available players over the next few seasons. Verdict While the idea of acquiring Antetokounmpo is understandably enticing to any team in the NBA, the Nets have to think about the long game during this rebuild. Getting Antetokounmpo would ensure that Brooklyn is going all in on a team that would presumably compete for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but is probably not good enough to compete for a championship. While Thomas, Claxton, and Demin are still young, Antetokounmpo is most likely towards the end of his prime, assuming that he doesn't age as well as Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James. Even if Antetokounmpo ages gracefully, he has three years left on his contract with the third year being a player option. So, the Nets would presumably have two years to convince Antetokounmpo to not only want a trade, but to sign another contract that would take him through the end of his career. Marks has already gone all in once during his tenure as GM and Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving did not work out for a variety of reasons, some outside of anyone's control. Marks said at the end of the season that the Nets will keep their minds open as they progress through the offseason, but ending the rebuild for Antetokounmpo may not be the move. Brooklyn would most likely not do this trade, at least not how the mock trade suggests.
