LABUAN: Seven types of pitcher plants, including the world's largest, were brought in specially from Kinabalu Park to be exhibited at the Borneo Flora Festival (BFF) here. Sabah Parks (TTS) Botanist Sukaibin Sumail said the largest pitcher plant known as 'Nepenthes rajah' is placed in an air-conditioned tent at the Permata Hutan Borneo. 'This pitcher plant, locally known as Kukuanga, can hold about 3.5 litres of water,' he said at the BFF site here. The BFF, which involves 31 exhibitors from Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan, was held for the first time at the Labuan International Marine Sports Complex. He said other pitcher plants exhibited at BFF are Nepenthes villosa, Nepenthes edwardsiana, Nepenthes stenophylla, Nepenthes burbidgeae, Nepenthes lowii and Nepenthes reinwardtiana. Sukaibin said visitors showed great interest in learning about the pitcher plants and he was delighted to share information about the rare species, which is seldom seen in public. In the same tent, a survey found that the Borneo Tropical Flowers section featured a tree decorated with fresh blooms and illuminated by light-emitting diode (LED) lights, creating a magical ambience within the enclosed space. At the base of the tree, various fresh flowers, including orchids, sunflowers and lilies, are beautifully arranged and accentuated with LED lighting. To preserve the condition of the fresh flowers, only 25 visitors were allowed in at a time. Guests are also welcomed by the natural, sweet fragrance of the 'sundal malam' flower upon entering the tent. Outside the tent, a three-meter-high replica of Tombiruo stands as a powerful symbol and reminder for humans to respect nature, uphold taboos and maintain harmony with nature. Crafted from driftwood, the striking sculpture is the result of a collaboration between local residents, members of the Faculty of Arts and Creative Multimedia at the Sabah Foundation College University, and carving, art and Borneo Heritage enthusiasts. The Tombiruo replica, along with a mural container installation, mural, will remain on display in the area, serving not only as a cultural attraction, but also a a draw for more tourists to Labuan. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? One tourist claimed they were resting on the 19th floor when they noticed the smell of smoke and ashes outside the balcony, but no fire alarm was heard at the time. Advertisement They decided to take the lift after seeing light smoke in the hallway, unaware of the fire's severity, as no emergency bell had sounded. The lift stopped suddenly on the fifth floor as the alarm finally activated, leaving the two inside for nearly an hour before being rescued by an engineer. The group had contacted the South Korean consulate for help, and while no injuries were reported, the incident has prompted concern about the building's emergency response system. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? City Hall acts on Tanjung Aru road lighting

Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 By: Sidney Skinner Text Size: Senior City Hall officers met with the developer's staff at the construction site on Jalan Aru. City Hall will step up efforts to ensure that the road in front of some Tanjung Aru condominiums is properly lit after dark, for the benefit of the many members of the public, including international visitiors, who gather on the First and Second Beach to enjoy the view and watch the sunset. This action follows feedback from a Luyang motorist about the lack of maintenance carried out on the streetlights along the stretch. Advertisement He noticed that many of these amenities were inoperative and was of the opinion that the lack of illumination was hazardous to pedestrians using the pavement on the road shoulder at night. The driver claimed to have witnessed a woman falling into the drain beside the verge while using the stretch on a recent evening. Thankfully, some men, who were going on foot, came to her rescue, according to him. The individual provided Hotline with the pertinent details regarding his grievance, which were forwarded to the agency. A spokesman for City Hall's Engineering Department said an inspection was made of Jalan Aru on the same day that it learned about the breakdown of the lights. Advertisement 'A problem with one of our cables on the side of the road was found to have caused the outage,' he said. 'A third party contractor clearing some land here had inadvertently damaged this power line.' Between nine to 10 of the agency's lights, between the Waikiki Condominium and the Kinabalu Yacht Club, were rendered out of order, according to him. He said the contractor was involved with a development coming up along the stretch. 'A discussion was held at the site between the Department's senior officers and the developer's staff at the site later that same morning. 'Our officers even had a look at the architectural plan for the building which was due to be constructed.' He said the company's personnel were asked to be more mindful of the presence of the streetlight fixtures along Jalan Aru to prevent more cables and connections from being impacted by the construction work. 'The contractor's workers immediately set about repairing the damaged cable. 'A second check was carried out later that evening, during which time it was confirmed that the affected streetlights were back in order.' The spokesman urged contractors carrying out major development projects within City Hall's rating area to give the agency advance notice of their activities. 'This will go a long way to minimise any problems related to our assets, including the streetlights, which may inadvertently be caused by such work.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
