Arteta responds to calls for Rice to be made captain

The debate was reignited this week after former captain Tony Adams urged Arteta to hand the armband to Declan Rice, arguing the England international would better embody the mentality required to turn Arsenal from contenders into champions.
Arteta, however, revealed that his decision was backed not just by his staff but overwhelmingly by the players themselves.
'My opinion is clear, and it's not just my opinion. It's all the staff and especially the players,' he said.
'I asked them to vote for the captain and I got the results yesterday. By a mile, by a big, big (margin), by 100 miles, everybody chose the same person, Martin Odegaard, which is the most clear sign that you can have. It's how they feel about who has to be their captain, to defend, to improve, and win the matches that we want to win, so I think there is no question about that.'
Photo byØdegaard has worn the armband since 2022 but, after Arsenal's sequence of near-misses in the league and three successive second-place finishes, questions have often been raised over the side's ability to withstand pressure in when it really matters.
Adams was blunt in his assessment: 'Every now and again as a manager, you have to put someone who reflects you, who reflects the football club, that you think can actually take you to the next level. You've got someone in there who's going to play every game all season, that's going to encourage people to come in and lay the foundations of a title-winning team. Declan Rice can do that, Odegaard can't. Come on Arteta, make him captain.'

'What matters the most is how these guys feel about who needs to lead them, how they feel comfortable, who is going to push them, who is going to give them support when it's happening,' he said.
Arsenal begin their season at Manchester United on Sunday before hosting Leeds, with a testing run against Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Newcastle to follow.

'Yes, especially with the consistency that we showed in the last three years, and now the margins, we know how small they are,' he said. 'We know that the competition has increased the level with recruitment, with another year together.'
The Arsenal manager confirmed that Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi will both be ready to feature at Old Trafford from the start, where Ødegaard will once again lead out the side his teammates voted to follow.

The head coach has been honest that the external noise created by the transfer window has caused complications with their preparation. He is hopeful that a victory will help mitigate some of those external factors, as well as the window closing. "The League Cup game, I won't count that as a game. But it's clear when you're losing in the league, then you add the Cup game and say, look, it doesn't look good," he admitted. "It's the beginning of the season. The game I saw today, we competed in the second half against West Brom, was really good. So actually, we see that we're improving, despite a lot of hectic around the club and the training ground. "Yes we are facing some difficult situations. We take the challenge. At some point, the calm will come back and we can work properly without any disruption. "So the first thing is it will stop as soon as the transfer window is closed. At least you can see we can work properly. "As long as the transfer window is open, it will be stressful. At the same time, you play a game and you need to win a game to calm down, to have more calm. So this is what we have to do now."

Here are some of your comments: United fans Richard: I agree with Ruben Amorim - we were clearly the better team and deserved something from the game. In the end, it was a story of two goalkeepers. It's brutal to say, but it's evidence that winning the title by 2028 will need a different person between the posts. Danyal: For the first time in a while, it was a strange feeling after defeat. We played well and should've probably taken at least a point from this game! The new signings have definitely showed why they were brought in, but we still need to strengthen that midfield before the window closes - otherwise it will always be a mismatch. Regardless, let's move on to the next match. This is a long season but the signs are there. Jonathan: United were superb. Huge improvements from the ineptitude of last season. Terrible from our keeper, although could have been a foul. Arsenal got very lucky - particularly with the obvious penalty for Cunha. Better days are definitely ahead. We all need to hold our nerve and back our charismatic and capable manager. Arsenal fans Matt: Don't judge too soon - only look at the league after the first seven or eight games. But we'll come good. June: Same old, same old. If Gyokeres is going to play up front they have to change the way they get the ball to him. Here are some of your comments: Nottingham Forest fans Peter: Some of our play in the first half was the most fluid I've seen since we've been in this league. Brentford had no idea what was happening. Better late than never. Our new signings and those we've been linked to should address the issues that ultimately undid our bid for the top five last season. Mark: Forest played some magnificent football in the first half. Every player we had on the pitch looked class. Gibbs-White and Anderson in particular were superb. The passes for goals two and three were top drawer. And there is more to come! I expect a higher finish in the league than last season. Simon: Looks like Forest have the players to be more tactically flexible this season. Towards the end of last season teams were learning how to play them (and Forest players were getting tired). It now looks like they have more than one way to play and recruitment has been excellent. Brentford fans Will: A bit shocked that we let three in. Honestly, we looked half asleep in the first period. We were better in the second - it helped having Schade and then Henderson in. Should start them, and with Damsgaard back we will get needed creativity. Very much need more in the final third.
