Dame Deborah James' daughter follows important life lesson her brave mum taught her
The 15-year-old daughter of Dame Deborah James has taken up her mother's fight in the battle against bowel cancer.
Eloise and her older brother Hugo sadly lost their mum to the disease in June 2022. Now the teen is set to step into the public eye and continue the campaign - and she's determined to carry on Dame Deborah's sense of fun.
Eloise has teamed up with Lorraine Kelly to support her No Butts initiative, which was launched by Dame Deborah in 2021.
Deborah was just 40 when she died, five years after her stage four bowel cancer diagnosis. She was known for her candid persona and infectious sense of fun, even dressing up in a poo costume to help highlight the cause.
Eloise told the Sun: "Mum would be chuffed I was doing this because spreading awareness is what it's all about. Mum didn't want to make it something scary, she wanted to make it something fun.
"She made it like dances, making jokes out of it. It gets to people more than being serious, 'cause no one is going to listen to someone being serious the whole time. Life is just not that serious, at the end of the day."
GCSE student Eloise has now made a film to help promote the campaign, alongside her grandmother Heather. It shows the pair together in the garden at home in Woking, remembering some of Deborah's efforts.
Eloise also spoke about Prince William 's visit in May 2022, when he conferred Deborah's Damehood.
"I remember making meringues when Prince William came and [my grandmother] was going round the house like, 'We have to tidy, we have to tidy.' The house was spotless but she was like, 'My house is a tip, I'm so sorry Prince William.' She spent 24 hours tidying, I don't know why she was apologising."
Eloise also spoke about some of her mum's cheeky campaigns, including branded loo roll and knickers. "The loo roll is genius, it's something that's a cheeky reminder. Mum was dressed like a poo half the time! I remember her drawing poo shapes and trying to tell us about the types of poos."
April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. Around 43,000 people are diagnosed every year in the UK, and more than 15,500 died from the disease in 2024, making it the second biggest cancer killer.
Bowel cancer is treatable if diagnosed early. Symptoms include blood in your poo, unexplainable weight loss, extreme tiredness, and lumps or pain in the tummy.
Eloise added: "What mum wanted was for everyone to know the truth, that it can happen to anybody. Even if you're the most healthy person in the room you still have a chance of getting it."
At the time of Deborah's death, her fundraising website bowelbabe.org had accumulated nearly £7 million to fund "clinical trials and research into personalised medicine for cancer patients and supporting campaigns to raise awareness of bowel cancer". Her final message read: "Find a life worth enjoying; take risks; love deeply; have no regrets; and always, always have rebellious hope. And finally, check your poo – it could just save your life."
Then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson described her as "an absolute inspiration", while Prince William and Princess Kate said in a statement, "Deborah was an inspirational and unfalteringly brave woman whose legacy will live on."

SC Happy Valley 2014-2023 25 LIFE in a small, West Yorkshire town must be very quiet. Wrong. Sarah Lancashire is the hugely relatable police sergeant Catherine Cawood, a dedicated and passionate cop with a mess of a home life as mum to a teenager – and also dealing with a crook (James Norton) that's too close to home. Sally Wainwright's drama is a quintessentially British masterpiece. SC Sherlock 2010-2017 25 BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH became a household name as the eponymous lead in this drama – one of the most cleverly scripted and directed ever. RM Blue Planet II 2017 25 SIR David Attenborough 's nature shows have always pushed the boundaries. But this series in particular cut through the public consciousness like few others. It showed us how single-use plastics – a phrase most people had never heard before – were ruining our oceans. And it pushed the issue to the very top of the global agenda. RM Gavin & Stacey 2007-2024 25 STARTING life on BBC Three in 2007, this story of long-distance love between an Essex boy and a Welsh girl went from hidden gem to national treasure. Subsequently shown on BBC One, there were three series and three Christmas specials, written by show stars James Corden (Smithy) and Ruth Jones (Nessa). The warm tales of friendship and family resonated with us and made, 'Oh' funny for all time. DP Strictly Come Dancing 2004- 25 FEW TV shows these days can bring together multiple generations across the country – but Strictly still manages it. With 22 series under its glittery belt, the dance contest has been entertaining us from September to Christmas since 2004. It's made house-hold names of the most minor celebs and has had us gasping, weeping and waltzing for more than two decades. DP Line Of Duty 2012-2021 25 A GRIPPING plot, stellar acting and scream-at-your-telly shocks made Jed Mercurio's series about police anti-corruption unit AC-12 an adrenaline hit. Never shying away from violence, or killing off a lead character in dramatic style, its fast and ferocious pace – mixed with incredibly clever twists – make it a crime thriller masterpiece. DP Top Gear 2002-2022 25 THE Jaguar of motoring shows, it always delivered and kept devoted fans in fifth gear for years. The glory days under Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, from 2002 to 2015, produced some of TV's finest moments – be it banter in the studio or epic challenges. A tour de force in broadcasting that successors could never live up to. FC Taskmaster 2015- 25 IF Have I Got News For You relies on pithy barbs, then Taskmaster's beauty lies in its innocence. BBC reportedly calls in police to investigate fresh Strictly allegations
The BBC has asked the police to investigate fresh allegations involving hit show Strictly Come Dancing, after claims two of its stars used cocaine, reports have said. According to the Sun On Sunday, the BBC has alerted the Metropolitan Police to new allegations about the show – but the details have not been specified. A BBC spokesperson said on Saturday the corporation does not comment on police investigations. 'We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us,' the statement added. 'We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further.' Earlier this month, reports in The Sun alleged two Strictly cast members' drug use was discussed on the BBC dancing show, and said that the corporation had appointed law firm Pinsent Masons to lead the investigation. The scandal-hit show was also the subject of a review in 2024, when the BBC looked into allegations of bullying and harassment against former professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, made by his former dance partner Amanda Abbington. The corporation upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made – and introduced a series of new measures aimed at improving welfare. This included the introduction of a chaperone who is present 'at all times' during training room rehearsals. EastEnders star James Borthwick was also suspended from the BBC after a video emerged of the actor using a disabled slur on the set of the dance programme. The cocaine use allegations were reportedly made in a legal submission by law firm Russells in March on behalf of former contestant Wynne Evans, who was dropped by the BBC after apologising for using 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly tour. It is understood that the BBC often appoints external law firms to help it lead investigations. The BBC spokesperson previously said: 'We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us.
