2 University of Arkansas students regain visa status after DHS termination
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Records have been restored for two of the five international students at the University of Arkansas whose visas were terminated by the Department of Homeland Security earlier this month.
According to UofA spokesperson John Thomas, the DHS terminated the Students' Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) records for five students around April 11.
International students on F-1 visas must prove financial support and stay in good academic standing, according to the Associated Press.

After arriving in the U.S., their status is managed by Homeland Security. If their SEVIS record is revoked, they must leave immediately, whereas previously, they could finish their studies before leaving.
On April 25, Thomas confirmed that at least two of the five students had their records reinstated. The cause of the terminations and the identities of the reinstated students remain unclear, and the university has not released further details.

Exceptions To Donald Trump's Travel Ban Exceptions to these new restrictions apply to the following groups of people: Any permanent resident of the United States and anyone with dual citizenship Foreign nationals with diplomatic visas (A-1, A-2), such as ambassadors, ministers or military personnel People with transit visas (C-2, C-3) People who work for international organizations such as the United Nations or the World Bank (G-1, G-4) People with NATO visas (NATO-1, NATO-6) Athletes and their teams, including supportive members and immediate relatives, traveling for the World Cup, Olympics or other major sporting event as determined by the Secretary of State Holders of immediate family immigrant visas (IR-1/CR-1, IR-2/CR-2, IR-5) "with clear and convincing evidence of identity and family relationship" Children who have been adopted abroad (visas IR-3, IR-4, IH-3, IH-4) People with Afghan Special Immigrant Visas, given to Afghans who helped the U.S. government during the war there Iranians fleeing persecution because they are part of a religious minority, such as Christians United States Government employees U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also both have the discretion to put individuals forward for exception based on whether they would "advance a critical United States national interest," the White House proclamation says. State agencies launch new Arkansas outdoor education program

(Screenshot from livestream) The governor announced on Wednesday the creation of a new outdoor education pilot program that will accept up to 30 Arkansas school districts that apply to participate. A partnership between the Arkansas Department of Education and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, the program will help equip students for a career in outdoor recreation, according to a press release from the governor's office. During Wednesday's announcement at AGFC's Witt Stephens Jr. Central Arkansas Nature Center in Little Rock, Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said if the pilot is successful, the program could be expanded to schools across the state and provide a model for the entire country. Getting kids outdoors will help improve their education, health and quality of life, Sanders said. 'Starting today, districts across our state can apply to be one of 30 schools to offer outdoor education built around the standards taught in core and elective content areas, experiences in outdoor learning engagement and projects that empower students to think critically and solve problems about the world around them,' she said. Doug Schoenrock, who was named AGFC's 20th director in April, said the 'truly unique' pilot program will bring the outdoors into the classroom and vice versa. 'And most importantly, this program will bring outdoors to the hearts and minds of our students, and build a connection with the Natural State, which we as Arkansans hold so dear,' Schoenrock said. The new initiative combines several of the governor's priorities, including education, workforce development and outdoor recreation. The pilot program responds to a recommendation made by the Natural State Initiative Advisory Council in its 2023 report to expand outdoor recreation programs to schools. Sanders launched the Natural State Initiative in an effort to expand Arkansas' outdoor economy, and its advisory council is chaired by her husband, Bryan. Tourism is the state's second largest industry behind agriculture. In the most recent year for which data is available, Arkansas welcomed more than 50 million visitors who spent nearly $10 billion, much of which went to outdoor recreation, according to the press release.
