Syria arrests 3 men suspected of links to Tadamon massacre in which hundreds were executed - Region
Security forces in Syria said on Monday that they arrested three people involved in the execution of hundreds of civilians by government forces in Damascus in 2013, two years after the country's 13-year civil war began.
Dozens of police and security trucks lined the streets of Tadamon, a Damascus suburb near the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp, where they carried out the arrests in the same streets that once bore witness to mass executions. Masked, rifle-wielding men moved through hollowed-out buildings, remnants of a war that turned the district into a front line between government forces and opposition fighters.
In 2022, a leaked video dated April 16, 2013, appeared to contain harrowing footage of the executions. The nearly seven-minute clip showed members of Syria's notorious Military Intelligence Branch 227 leading a line of about 40 blindfolded prisoners, their hands tied behind their backs, into an abandoned building in Tadamon. One by one, the gunmen pushed or kicked the prisoners into a trench filled with old tyres, shooting them as they fell.
One of the three men arrested was Monzer Al-Jazairi, a resident of the Zahira neighbourhood and a former operative with the military security that operated before the fall of President Bashar Assad in December.
Flanked by security men, Al-Jazairi recounted how his forces would bring detainees arrested at checkpoints in groups to the buildings, shoot and kill them and then blow up the buildings. He added that he estimates he and his colleagues killed about 500.
It was unclear whether Al-Jazairi spoke under duress or voluntarily.
Damascus Security Chief Lt. Col. Abdul Rahman Al-Dabbagh corroborated the number, citing additional confessions from those arrested.
'Many of those killed used to be collected at checkpoints and security (detention) centres, brought to Tadamon neighbourhood, where they were executed,' Al-Dabbagh told the AP.
The other arrested suspects were Somer Mohammed Al-Mahmoud and Imad Mohammed Al-Mahmoud.
Years after the Syrian war's worst massacres and mass disappearances, most alleged crimes have not been investigated and remain unpunished.
Since Assad's ouster, Syrian security forces, under the new leadership led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, once affiliated with al-Qaida, have been tracking down and arresting remnants of the former government and military across the country.
'The operation is ongoing to apprehend all those involved in violations and massacres against Syrians,' Al-Dabbagh said.

Egyptian official reacts to Ambush in Khan Yunis that killed four Israeli soldiers
Egyptian journalist and parliamentarian Mostafa Bakry stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's belief that 'occupying Gaza and annihilating many of its people' would force them into submission is merely an 'illusion.' In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Bakry commented on the losses sustained by the Israeli army in battles in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza Strip, yesterday. He asserted that 'the catastrophe of the Israeli dead in Khan Yunis confirms that the Palestinian people will not kneel and that the resistance will not end as long as the rights of the Palestinian people remain trampled.' Bakry continued: 'Netanyahu is deluded if he thinks that occupying Gaza and annihilating many of its people is enough to impose a surrender plan. The Palestinian people do not know defeat or kırılma, and peace will only be achieved with the return of rights and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.' On Friday, the Israeli army announced the killing of four soldiers in a building collapse in the Bani Suheila neighborhood of Khan Yunis, southern Gaza Strip, due to an explosive device detonating on Friday morning. The Israeli army spokesperson confirmed the deaths of Reserve Major General Chen Gros, 33, a soldier in the Magian unit of the Commando Brigade; Sergeant Yoav River, 19, from the Warburg unit, a soldier in the Yahalom unit of the Combat Engineering Corps; and two other soldiers whose families have been notified but whose names have not yet been authorized for publication. The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the number of Israeli soldiers killed since the start of the war on Gaza has risen to 866 following the ambush in Khan Yunis. Abu Obeida, the spokesperson for the Al-Qassam Brigades, commented on the Israeli army's losses. In a statement, he said: 'What the occupation incurred today in losses in Khan Yunis and Jabalia is an extension of a series of qualitative operations, and a model of what the occupation forces will face everywhere they are present.' He added in a statement on the Telegram platform on Friday: 'The enemy public has no choice but to force their leadership to stop the war of annihilation or prepare to receive more of their sons in coffins.'

Egypt welcomes ILO resolution granting observer status to Palestine
Egyptian and Palestinian flags CAIRO – June 7, 2025: Egypt's Ministry of Labor has welcomed the decision by the General Conference of the International Labour Organization (ILO) to grant the State of Palestine observer status within the organization. The resolution was overwhelmingly adopted, with 386 votes in favor, 15 against, and 42 abstentions, marking a significant step forward for Palestinian representation in international labor affairs. Egyptian Minister of Labor Mohammad Jubran extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Palestinian delegation—comprising representatives of the government, employers, and workers—on this historic milestone. He praised the ILO's decision to grant Palestine "non-member observer state" status, describing it as a just and overdue recognition. The resolution was adopted during a plenary session on Friday, June 6, as part of the 113th Session of the International Labor Conference, held in Geneva from June 2 to 13, 2025. Minister Jubran delivered Egypt's official statement in support of the resolution during the plenary session on Thursday at the United Nations Palace. In his remarks, he welcomed the adoption of what he described as a 'historic resolution,' noting its alignment with the United Nations General Assembly resolution of May 10, 2024. That resolution affirmed Palestine's eligibility for full UN membership under Article 4 of the UN Charter and called for its admission to the United Nations and its specialized agencies. The ILO's 352nd Governing Body session subsequently adopted a resolution to amend Palestine's status, enabling its delegation to participate more fully in the organization's meetings and activities. Minister Jubran stated: 'This resolution embodies a historical truth and a recognition of the rights of a people who have suffered for more than seven decades under foreign occupation, blockade, oppression, and the killing of women and children.
