Letter row in CPI(M): Kerala Minister M.B. Rajesh alleges attempts to defame him ahead of elections

The Hindu2 days ago
Kerala's Minister for Local Self-Governments M.B. Rajesh said in Kochi on Monday (August 18, 2025) that the attempt to include him among the leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] having alleged financial links with a U.K.-based Keralite businessperson was to 'defame' him by raising baseless allegations ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections.
He was referring to the controversy following the media leak of a purported 'confidential complaint' to the CPI(M) Polit Bureau, reportedly accusing an assemblage of party leaders from Kerala, including former Ministers, of partnering in financial shenanigans allegedly enabled by the businessman.
'This purported letter has been doing the rounds in WhatsApp for the last four years. Such documents that should be thrown into the dustbin will emerge again as the elections are a few months away,' he told mediapersons.
Asked whether the businessman was his alleged benami, the Minister said he realised the 'intent' of the query. 'You want to make it the headline. Hence I am not responding to the question,' he said.
Mr. Rajesh said similar allegations had surfaced against him ahead of the previous Assembly election as well. 'It included the allegations around the appointment of my wife [as a faculty member at the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit] and the accusation that I was aiding the accused in the Walayar case. The investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation had brought out the truth behind the Walayar case,' he said.

Bill introduced by Amit Shah is a conspiracy to destabilise non-BJP governments: Dipankar Bhattacharya

Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) said that 'The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025' introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah is a well-planned conspiracy to destabilise non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governments in States and obstruct their functioning. Also Read | No foreign voters in Bihar SIR list; Modi brings divisive agenda: CPI(ML) Addressing the press in the State capital, Mr. Bhattacharya said the Bill is the death knell for India's Constitutional federal system and parliamentary democracy. 'According to this Bill, if a Minister is sentenced to five years on any charge and remains in jail for 30 days, he will have to step down from the post. Obviously, the Prime Minister or the BJP ministers will not be sent to jail. This provision is a well-planned conspiracy to destabilise non-BJP governments and not to allow them to function,'Mr. Bhattacharya said. He further said, 'After the misuse of the ED [Enforcement Directorate], the CBI [Central Bureau of Investigation], the NIA [National Investigation Agency] and converting Governor offices into BJP offices, now if this law comes into effect, the existence of non-BJP governments will become almost impossible. Every citizen who believes in democracy, the Constitution and the rule of law should strongly oppose this Bill.' Mr. Shah today introduced three Bills in the Lok Sabha to provide a legal framework for the removal of the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers and Ministers in States and Union Territories who are 'arrested and detained in custody on account of serious criminal charges' Praise for V-P candidate Mr. Bhattacharya also welcomed the selection of Justice B. Sudershan Reddy for the post of Vice-President by the Opposition asserting that it's a positive and timely decision. Praising him, Mr. Bhattacharya explained that Mr. Reddy's track record in protecting the Constitution and human rights has been remarkable. He added that Mr. Reddy had declared the Salwa Judum campaign in Chhattisgarh as unconstitutional. He also stressed that this country does not need a person associated with the RSS [Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh] ideology. Speaking about the ongoing 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Mr. Bhattacharya said that the march is becoming a mass movement to protect democracy and the Constitution, and is also garnering widespread public support. Lashing out at the Election Commission (EC), Mr. Bhattacharya said the names of migrant workers are being deleted, citing the excuse of Bangladeshi infiltrators. 'Any leader of Gujarat becomes a voter of Bihar, but the names of Biharis who go to Gujarat to earn money are being deleted. There is also Form 6A for NRIs but no form for the migrant workers of Bihar,'Mr. Bhattacharya said. He alleged that scams are going on as the names of lakhs of people are found without addresses, and the ECI is calling them homeless voters. Mr. Bhattacharya asked the EC how the verification happened and how it communicated with the voters. He also flagged the objections raised by the political parties and Booth Level Agents (BLAs), which have been denied by the EC, saying the political parties have registered no such claims. Attacking the Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the State, the CPI-(ML) leader said that the government has been a burden for twenty years and had to be uprooted from the power.

Maoists kill villager in ‘jan adalat', issue fresh threats not to spy for Bastar police

RAIPUR: A 30-year-old villager was killed by Maoists after being accused of working as police informer during a 'jan adalat' in Kanker district of Bastar division. Maoists summoned villagers to 'jan adalat' on Monday night and had assaulted another villager but set him free after warning. Maoists have put up a banner on road nearby freshly threatening people not to spy for police or local political representatives. According to police, members of the CPI (Maoist) Partapur area committee held a 'people's court' on at Binagunda village in Chhotebethiya region. During the gathering, they accused 30-year-old tribal villager Manesh Nureti of passing information to security forces and killed him in front of locals. Binaginda is the same region where 29 Maoists were killed in a fierce encounter with security forces in April last year. Police said that after the killing Maoists had also put up banners on the Sripur–Indrapur road warning of death penalty to villagers if they support police. The banners named several individuals, including panchayat sarpanch and locals alleging that they were working in collaboration with police. Maoists also named prominent cops and DRG personnel of recruiting villagers as covert operatives. Police have launched a combing operation in the affected area. Security officials said Maoists are attempting to regain ground by targeting villagers suspected of assisting security forces. Congress morale rises as Rahul leads 'Voter Adhikar Yatra'

Patna: Political observers and social scientists believe the ongoing "Voter Adhikar Yatra" across Bihar—launched to highlight alleged discrepancies in the electoral rolls—has projected Congress leader in a new political avatar. While INDIA bloc allies are part of the march, it is Rahul who is at the forefront, steering the campaign and reclaiming the spotlight, they said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now People could be seen lining up along the roads, eager to catch a glimpse of Rahul in the company of INDIA bloc leaders such as Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, Dipankar Bhattacharya and VIP chief Mukesh Sahani. Social scientists believe that his interaction with voters is an attempt to connect directly with the masses. This is the first time Rahul has camped in Bihar for a fortnight, boosting the morale of Congress workers. "Rahul's image has undergone a drastic change, especially after the " ", which gave a new definition to politics as the common masses became his focal point. Now, his opposition to the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls has brought him into the limelight again," said DM Diwakar, former director of AN Sinha Institute of Social Studies. Political analyst Nawal Kishore Choudhary said Rahul's yatra would definitely leave an impact, though only to a limited extent. "The Congress may get revived, but issues of Bihar could move into the background. The Congress revival is not good news for the regional parties," he said, adding, "Rahul has hijacked the issues earlier raised by Lalu, Tejashwi and the RJD." Analysts are of the opinion that Rahul's growing presence in Bihar politics could pose a challenge to the RJD during seat-sharing talks. In the 2020 assembly elections, the Congress was allotted 70 seats but managed to win only 19. Reports suggest the RJD had earlier planned to reduce Congress's share of seats due to its performance in the last polls, but now the situation appears different. In the 2020 elections, the Left parties—comprising CPI-ML, CPI and CPI(M)—performed well, winning 16 out of the 29 seats they contested, whereas the RJD won 75 out of 144 (a strike rate of 23.11%). On the other hand, the Congress's strike rate was just 9.48%. RJD leaders declined to comment on the issue.
