Police update on 13-hour fire that tore through house as forensics scour for evidence

Police have issued an update on a fire that ripped through a house as forensics spent another day scouring the scene on Tuesday (August 12). Officers and CSI teams in white suits remained in attendance on Platt Lane for a second day after a fire broke out in the early hours of Monday morning. Five fire engines first attended the incident at around 3.15am, with crews working at the scene for more than 13 hours. An investigation was launched into the blaze. One resident said: "There was smoke everywhere. It went really high and then police and fire came. I have to say, the fire service has been fantastic dealing with this." According to locals, the affected house was a derelict building which is 'known to the police'. "There's been a lot of comings and goings in that house," another person said. Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE "The house is known to the police because I've called them about it before. We've heard shouting and noise from there but this is probably the worst thing that's happened there. There's been funny goings on in there." It's understood officers remained in attendance at the scene overnight and into Tuesday, while some door-to-door enquiries took place on the street. Images showed crime scene investigators working at the scene with a GMP forensic van parked outside the house, alongside a GMFRS fire investigation team vehicle. A bag of contaminated waste was gathered, while the roof of the building appeared to have lost tiles in the fire and a front garden wall left damaged. In an update, Greater Manchester Police confirmed the scene has since been stood down and that no suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. There are also not thought to be any suspicious circumstances at this time. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Shortly after 3.15am on Monday, August 11, five fire engines from across Greater Manchester were called to attend a house fire on Platt Lane, Manchester. "Crews wearing breathing apparatus arrived quickly and used two hose reels, a thermal camera a specialist scorpion appliance to extinguish the fire. "GMP assisted with cordoning the area. Firefighters departed after roughly 13 hours and 25 minutes in attendance." --- Day in day out, our reporters in the Manchester Evening News newsroom bring you remarkable stories from all aspects of Mancunian life. According to reports on social media, villagers and fellow dog lovers rallied round to find the woman's beige-coloured whippet dog that had escaped from the property during the incident. Comments on Facebook suggest the dog has been found. The police have thanked members of the public who supported the woman who was assaulted and helped at the scene. A police investigation is ongoing into both incidents, and a spokesman said: "We realise the events in Naburn will have caused shock and concern in the village. "However, officers believe that the wider community were not at risk and that both parties involved in the incident knew each other. "Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing and there will continue to be a police presence in the village to support the community."
