
YouTube generation propels Japan's anti-foreigner politics into mainstream
The 38-year-old hairdresser is among a growing number of Japanese voters drawn to the right-wing Sanseito party, whose warnings about foreigners helped it establish a strong foothold in an upper house election recently.
"It is not about discrimination, it's just like, why don't they notice?" said Kato, who, like many Sanseito supporters, obtains his information from YouTube and other social media sites, a space the party has utilised to amplify its "Japanese First" message.
Japan's foreign-born residents account for just three per cent of the total population, a fraction of the corresponding proportion in the United States and Europe, but record numbers of tourists in recent years have made foreigners more visible in major cities.
While Sanseito largely avoids identifying specific immigrant groups, Romeo Marcantuoni, a Tokyo-based academic who has studied the party, said it tapped latent concerns ranging from badly-behaved tourists to conspiracy theories about sneaking Chinese influence.
Kato said he believed the Chinese, the biggest cohort of foreign residents in Japan and among the largest visitor groups, were quietly taking over the country. Chinese are also often the focal point for anti-immigrant rhetoric propagated online.
Sanseito leader Sohei Kamiya and other party lawmakers and candidates have raised concerns about Chinese buying up land and resources in Japan. One of the party's policies listed on its website is to "stop the silent invasion of Japan by foreign forces".
The party did not immediately respond to a request for comment and Kamiya has previously denied criticism that it is xenophobic.
Sanseito is most popular among 18 to 39-year-olds, with men favouring the party more than women, according to a poll conducted by public broadcaster NHK, a trend increasingly seen among support for right-wing parties in democracies worldwide.
In contrast, support for Ishiba's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which lost its majority in the election, was deepest among those aged over 70 with no clear gender divide, the NHK poll showed.
Sanseito's presence online had given them visibility among younger voters that the LDP had struggled to reach, Kato said.
The party's official YouTube channel has three times as many followers as the LDP's, with engagement in their content far higher than other parties, a study by Asahi newspaper found.
"They are the party of YouTube," said Jeffrey Hall, a lecturer at Kanda University of International Studies who has authored a book on right-wing politics in Japan.
YouTube did not respond to emails seeking comment on Sanseito's use of the platform.
On its community guidelines page, YouTube says it closely monitors content and removes videos it deems to promote "harmful or dangerous behaviour."
Birthed during the Covid-19 pandemic when they spread conspiracy theories about vaccinations, Sanseito has broadened its appeal with its tough immigration policies and pledges to help households struggling with rising prices.
It also wants to scrap Japan's pacifist constitution and restore the Emperor's authority, fringe ideas promoted by other right-wing groups that regularly drive around Japan's cities in black trucks blaring imperial-era military songs.
While that megaphone politics has long been largely ignored by the Japanese, Sanseito has set its sights on emulating the successes of other far-right groups in Europe, such as Germany's AfD and Britain's Reform UK.
At a rally held outside Tokyo's bustling Shimbashi train station recently, crowds clapped and cheered some of Sanseito's newly elected lawmakers.
"They're going to get things done," said Eriko Harada, 47, a housewife wearing a kimono and a headband emblazoned with the words "Samurai Spirit", who said she voted for the first time this year.
Sanseito's rise has sparked a backlash by those who fear the party is normalising xenophobia. The rally attracted dozens of protesters who tried to drown out the speakers.
"It is people falling for lies and displacing their frustrations — economic hardship, political alienation — onto others," said Miroko Kato, a 42-year-old haiku poet among the protestors.

Myanmar military courts sentence 12 to life for human trafficking, including Chinese nationals
BANGKOK (AP): Myanmar military courts have sentenced a dozen individuals - including five Chinese nationals - to life imprisonment for their involvement in multiple human trafficking cases, state-run media reported Saturday. According to the Myanma Alinn newspaper, the convictions stem from a range of offenses including the online distribution of sex videos and the trafficking of Myanmar women into forced marriages in China. In one case, five people - including two Chinese nationals identified as Lin Te and Wang Xiaofeng - were sentenced to life imprisonment by a military court in Yangon, the country's largest city, on July 29. They were found guilty under Myanmar's Anti-Trafficking in Persons law for producing sex videos involving three Myanmar couples and distributing the footage online for profit. In a separate case, the same court sentenced a woman and three Chinese nationals - Yibo, Cao Qiu Quan and Chen Huan. The group was convicted of planning to transport two Myanmar women, recently married to two of the convicted Chinese men, into China, the report said. Additionally, three other people received life sentences from a separate military court for selling a woman as a bride to China, and for attempting to do the same with another woman. In another case, a woman from Myanmar's central Magway region was given a 10-year sentence on July 30 for planning to transport two Myanmar women to be sold as brides to Chinese men, the report said. Human trafficking, particularly of women and girls lured or forced into marriages in China, remains a widespread problem in Myanmar, a country still reeling from civil war after the military seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021. The persisting conflict in most areas of Myanmar has left millions of women and children vulnerable to exploitation. A 2018 report by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Kachin Women's Association Thailand (KWAT) - which works to prevent and respond to trafficking in northern Kachin and Shan states bordering China - estimated that about 21,000 women and girls from northern Myanmar were forced into marriage in China between 2013 and 2017. In its latest report published in December, KWAT noted a sharp decline in the number of trafficking survivors accessing its services from 2020 to 2023. It attributed the decline to the Covid-19 pandemic and border closures caused by the ongoing conflict following the army takeover. However, it reported a resurgence in 2024 as people from across Myanmar began migrating to China in search of work. Maj-Gen Aung Kyaw Kyaw, a deputy minister for Home Affairs, said during a June meeting that the authorities had handled 53 cases of human trafficking, forced marriage and prostitution in 2024, 34 of which involved China, according to a report published by Myanmar's Information Ministry. The report also said that a total of 80 human trafficking cases, including 14 involving marriage deception by foreign nationals, were recorded between January and June this year. - AP

Take an independent tack on China, Wang Yi urges South Korea
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has used his first official phone call with his new South Korean counterpart to call on Seoul to oppose 'decoupling' and to pursue an independent foreign policy. In his call with Cho Hyun on Monday, Wang urged South Korea to promote a 'stable, sustainable and predictable' China policy and to deepen pragmatic cooperation, according to the Chinese foreign ministry. South Korea's Yonhap News Agency said the two ministers spoke for about 45 minutes, reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing the bilateral strategic cooperative partnership in a 'steady and mature' manner. 'They agreed to work together to ensure that the upcoming Apec summit in Gyeongju serves as a new turning point in bilateral ties and to deliver tangible outcomes in practical cooperation that can be felt by the peoples of both countries,' Yonhap reported, citing South Korea's foreign ministry. Beijing seeks to reset its ties with the newly installed leadership in Seoul under President Lee Jae-myung. Ties between Beijing and Seoul have begun to thaw since Lee, widely viewed as a China dove, assumed office on June 4, succeeding his US-leaning predecessor Yoon Suk-yeol, who fell from grace following a failed attempt to impose martial law. Lee spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping in a call last month, and Lee has reportedly been invited to attend China's military parade in Tiananmen Square on September 3 for the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The South Korean leader has yet to say whether he will go. During their call on Monday, Wang also voiced support for South Korea's hosting of the Apec summit on October 31 and November 1, which Xi is widely expected to attend. In an apparent reference to Yoon, whose pivot towards Washington and Tokyo and confrontational approach to Beijing strained ties with China, Wang also urged Seoul to maintain 'independence and autonomy' in its foreign policy. 'China-South Korea relations are based on mutual interests, beneficial to both peoples, not targeting any third party, and should not be subject to any third party,' Wang said. The Chinese diplomat also called on Seoul to 'deepen mutually beneficial cooperation to achieve common development', 'jointly oppose 'decoupling and supply chain disruption' and safeguard stable and smooth global industrial and supply chains'. The comments echoed Xi's message to Lee in which the Chinese president appealed for wider diplomatic, economic and cultural exchanges towards 'good-neighbourly friendship', while urging Seoul to respect Beijing's core interests from Taiwan to the South China Sea. Yonhap reported that Wang also congratulated Cho, who took office last week, on his inauguration, and the pair agreed to maintain the positive momentum in bilateral ties through high-level exchanges. Cho invited Wang to visit South Korea, and Wang said he would do so at a mutually convenient time, according to the South Korean agency. Neither side mentioned North Korea in their statements on the meeting. But according to the Chinese foreign ministry, Cho said he looked forward to 'strengthening communication and coordination with China, facing history squarely, and jointly safeguarding regional peace'. Meanwhile, a Pew Research Centre survey released this month indicated that South Koreans continued to view the US significantly more favourably than China. Brazil grants BYD exemption from EV tariff hike, but not for as long as sought
Brazil announced a compromise in a dispute between Chinese EV maker BYD and traditional carmakers on Thursday, granting the company a short-term tariff break while moving forward with hikes that will hit it more aggressively in the long run. The decision was reached in a closed-door session of the Chamber of Foreign Trade (Camex) on Wednesday but not released publicly until Thursday. It follows weeks of heavy lobbying on both sides, with carmakers warning of mass lay-offs and BYD accusing rivals of trying to shut out competition. Under the measure, BYD will be allowed to import up to US$463 million worth of semi-assembled electric and hybrid vehicles over a six-month period without paying import taxes. This tariff-free window will apply during the first half of 2026, offering short-term relief as BYD ramps up local production. Separately, the government decided to bring forward a previously scheduled levy increase. The import tariff for electric and hybrid vehicle kits will now rise to 35 per cent in January 2027, a year and a half earlier than the original July 2028 timeline. Fully assembled vehicles will reach the same 35 per cent rate by July 2026, as previously planned. BYD had requested a reduced tariff through mid-2026 to ease the ramp-up of its new manufacturing plant in Camaçari, Bahia State. The company, investing R$5.5 billion (US$978 million) in the facility, argued that temporary relief was necessary as it builds up its local production capacity. But the proposal triggered an immediate backlash. In a joint letter to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the National Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers, or Anfavea, warned that the exemption could put R$180 billion in planned investment at risk and eliminate as many as 50,000 jobs. Signed by officials from Toyota, General Motors, Stellantis and Volkswagen, the letter accused BYD of seeking an unfair advantage and said Brazil risked becoming a low-complexity 'screwdriver economy'. Six state governors, mostly from Brazil's southern and southeastern industrial heartland, also opposed the measure, urging the government to delay the decision and consult regional leaders. Thursday's announcement attempts to strike a balance. BYD receives limited short-term relief, while Anfavea gets the accelerated tax schedule it sought. Anfavea praised the compromise, describing the six-month exemption as 'the upper limit' of what the industry could accept without jeopardising existing and future investment. 'We hope this matter is now definitively closed, with no room for further extensions,' Anfavea President Igor Cavet said. He also credited the outcome to coordinated pressure from carmakers, labour unions, governors and lawmakers, calling it a demonstration of the sector's strength. 'This is not just about the automotive industry,' he added. 'It's about the kind of industrial future we want for Brazil, one that generates innovation, skilled jobs and a stronger domestic supply chain.' For its part, BYD remained defiant. In a sharply worded open letter, the company referred to its rivals as 'dinosaurs' that panicked when forced to lower prices and offer better technology. The company, however, is yet to react to the government's decision. BYD began assembling its first vehicle in Brazil in July using semi-knocked down kits, in which the car arrives mostly built. The company plans to switch to fully knocked-down kits within 18 months and eventually reach 70 per cent local content by 2028 under an agreement with the Bahia government. The company is expanding its complex in Camacari, where construction on a second production facility is under way. Along with a rival Chinese brand GWM, BYD has rapidly captured market share in Brazil's electrified vehicle segment.
