Azalina, Ewon to represent Malaysia at Pope Francis' funeral
PUTRAJAYA: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick will represent the Malaysian government at the State Funeral Ceremony for the late Pope Francis, scheduled for April 26 in Vatican City.
The Foreign Ministry confirmed this in a statement on Friday.
The State Funeral will include a solemn Mass in St Peter's Square, Vatican City, presided over by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re.
Following the Mass, a ceremonial procession will accompany His Holiness's remains to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, where he will be laid to rest in a private interment.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also expressed his condolences on the passing of Pope Francis on April 21.
In his message, the prime minister paid tribute to Pope Francis's profound contributions to interfaith dialogue, environmental stewardship, and the defence of the marginalised.
On April 23, Ewon had signed the Book of Condolences at the Apostolic Nunciature in Kuala Lumpur, on behalf of the government,

Anwar receives Aidiladha greetings from Iranian president, reaffirms support for Palestine
KUALA LUMPUR: In the spirit of Aidiladha, which upholds the values of sacrifice and justice, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed appreciation for the steadfastness of Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian in defending the plight of the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza. In a phone call with Masoud earlier Thursday (June 5), Anwar said Malaysia stands firmly with Iran in strongly rejecting all forms of occupation and the ongoing expulsion of Gaza's people, who continue to be oppressed by the Zionist Israeli regime. "I also conveyed that Malaysia's foreign policy is not dictated by external powers but is built on national interests and firm convictions. "Malaysia condemns the hypocrisy of certain countries that claim to uphold human rights yet silently allow mass killings without any dignified action. Silence in the face of oppression is a betrayal of universal human values," he said in a Facebook Thursday. Anwar said Masoud also extended Aidiladha greetings for the celebration on Saturday (June 7). Anwar prayed that haj pilgrims from both nations currently in the holy city of Makkah would be granted a blessed haj and contribute to the development of the "Ummah" upon returning to their respective countries. The prime minister also expressed gratitude to Masoud for his noble efforts in facilitating the repatriation of two Malaysian citizens previously detained in Iran. He said during the conversation, he conveyed appreciation to Masoud following the recent visits by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir to Tehran, as part of joint efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation. He noted that the cooperation spans education, technology, food security, trade, investment and the oil and gas sector. "In the same discussion, Malaysia welcomes the decision to resume Mahan Air flights from Tehran to Kuala Lumpur, which will undoubtedly open more opportunities and avenues for economic ties and people-to-people connections," he said. In a separate post, Anwar said he received a phone call from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan this afternoon, during which they discussed, among other things, the suffering of the Palestinian people. Malaysia wholeheartedly welcomes and fully supports President Erdogan's stance to utilise all available platforms and capabilities to defend the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people," he said. Anwar said they also discussed Erdogan's recent official visit to Malaysia, which he described as the most successful and meaningful in the nation's diplomatic history, further strengthening the long-standing bilateral ties. He said the visit was not merely a ceremonial exchange but was underpinned by substantive discussions addressing shared interests. "I view the visit as a manifestation of the alignment of values and the clear direction both nations share in upholding justice, sovereignty and the development of the global ummah," he said. Kuala Lumpur to host fourth CEAPAD on July 11
KUALA LUMPUR: The fourth Ministerial Meeting of the Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD IV) will be held in Kuala Lumpur on July 11. The meeting will be jointly chaired by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and his counterparts from Japan and Palestine, Wisma Putra said on Thursday (June 5). Earlier, Malaysia, Japan and Palestine had co-chaired the eighth Working-level Online Meeting of CEAPAD. The meeting was held for the second time this year with discussions focused on current and future assistance needs for Palestine and preparations for the 4th CEAPAD, the ministry said on its official Facebook page. The meeting was also participated by Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, the World Bank, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and the Islamic Development Bank. Separately, the Japanese Foreign Ministry, in a statement, said participants to the meeting have concurred to working towards the success of the upcoming ministerial meeting. The Palestinian side, meanwhile, updated the participants on the current situation in Gaza and the West Bank, and outlined future assistance needs, it added. The virtual meeting was co-chaired by the director-general of the Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau at Japan's Foreign Ministry, Ando Toshihide, Palestine's Acting Planning and International Cooperation Minister, Dr Samah Hamad, and and undersecretary of the International Cooperation and Development Division at Malaysia's Foreign Ministry, Devrin Jeck. CEAPAD is a regional platform initiated by Japan in 2013 to support Palestinian state-building efforts by leveraging the resources, knowledge, and economic development experiences of East Asian nations. In a joint news conference in Putrajaya early this year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba have reaffirmed commitment to CEAPAD and to support Palestinian development efforts. - Bernama
