Police considering charges against sister of missing Denton woman found safe in Michigan

CBS News20-05-2025
Authorities are considering charges against the sister of a 76-year-old North Texas woman who was found safe Tuesday morning in Michigan, more than a week after being taken without legal consent from an assisted living facility, according to the Denton Police Department.
Karen May Taube, the subject of a statewide Silver Alert, was located at a hotel in Houghton Lake, Michigan, with her sister, Eva Haron. Police say Haron allegedly removed Taube from Willow Bend Assisted Living & Memory Care on May 12 — violating a court order and taking her more than 1,000 miles away.

Denton police and the Denton County District Attorney's Office are reviewing potential charges against Haron for interfering with the rights of Taube's court-appointed legal guardian.
Authorities said Taube is under guardianship that prohibits contact with Haron.
Woman evaluated at hospital, returning to Denton
Taube was positively identified at the Michigan hotel by the Roscommon County Sheriff's Department. Investigators had previously believed the two were traveling in a white Ford F-150, though Taube was not considered in immediate danger.
As a precaution, Taube was taken to a hospital for evaluation and is expected to return to Denton under her guardian's supervision, police said.
The Dallas office of the FBI assisted in the search.

Four arrested after break-in at home reportedly owned by Brad Pitt, say police

Four people have been arrested in connection with a burglary earlier this summer at a Los Angeles home reportedly owned by actor Brad Pitt, police said. Officers responded on June 25 to a break-in at the house in the Los Feliz area of the city. Police said at the time that suspects broke in through the front window, ransacked the home and fled with miscellaneous property. Detectives have made four arrests, Officer Drake Madison said on Tuesday. He said the suspects' names could be released later in the day. Officials could not identify who owned or lived in the home, and no information was available on what was stolen. Pitt reportedly bought the property for 5.5 million US dollars (£4 million) in April 2023, according to Traded, a commercial real estate website. A representative for the actor declined to comment on Tuesday. Pitt had been out of the country in June on a globe-spanning promotional tour for his new movie, F1.

Oklahoma QB John Mateer reportedly denies Venmo payments referencing 'sports gambling' were related to betting

Oklahoma QB John Mateer has reportedly denied any involvement with sports betting after screenshots of his Venmo account went viral Monday night. Mateer's Venmo history no longer exists. The alleged transactions were from the fall of 2022 when Mateer was a true freshman at Washington State and one transaction referenced USC and UCLA. The transactions allegedly included "sports gambling" twice in the memo section. According to ESPN, Mateer denies "ever being involved in gambling" and Oklahoma is planning an investigation. Mateer transferred to Oklahoma after the 2024 season. He followed Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle to Norman after Washington State scored 36.6 points per game a season ago. Only five more teams scored more per game than the Cougars did. Oklahoma, meanwhile, averaged 24 points a game and ranked 97th in the country. Mateer was the catalyst for Washington State's offense. He completed nearly 65% of his passes for 3,139 yards and 29 TDs while also leading the team in rushing. He had 178 carries for 826 yards and 15 TDs and tied Miami's Cam Ward for the most total touchdowns in college football. A player found to have wagered on his or her own sport involving a game with other schools can lose up to half a season of eligibility. A player who wagered on something involving his or her own team can face a permanent loss of eligibility. In 2023, former Iowa State QB Hunter Dekkers lost his eligibility after he was found to have placed a $15 bet on ISU football in 2021 when he was a backup.
